MN no longer safe for gender critical women

TheXXFactor · 18/04/2018 22:20

I am reluctantly deleting my MN account, in light of the data breach: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3225517-The-MNHQ-Moderation-team

It's a fantastic site, Justine has shown herself to be a staunch defender of women and I'm enormously grateful to MNetters for all your support and humour over the years. So this isn't a flounce, more a reluctant slink out of the door of a party while the gin is still flowing but...

..this data breach could cost me my job and my personal safety. I have no way of knowing whether Emma has stolen my data and MN don't seem interested in finding out. They are not even reporting the breach to the ICO.

I hate doing this. I hate that trans extremists will see this as a victory. But I cannot trust MN to keep my data safe, or even to take proper steps to remedy a breach. I sincerely hope that they will review their approach, so I can come back. Until they do, the anonymity of usernames means nothing and every gender critical woman on here is at risk.

So long and thanks for all the Pom bears Bear Sad

I am Spartacus, so I am staying

spontaneousgiventime · 18/04/2018 23:05

I admit I'm considering leaving too. It would be so very sad but I have to feel safe and I don't.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 18/04/2018 23:09

I'm staying too.

It will be a cold day in Hell before I let these fuckers intimidate me

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 18/04/2018 23:14

I can't leave

Ive been thinking i should

But now a bunch of people are going to think they have scared me off if i take a break

And thats not the way i work

Its really annoying....if I'd have left last month as I intended i would be sat here all smug

(And yes...i know nobody cares but i like to pretend Grin)

busyboysmum · 18/04/2018 23:15

Stay! Just change your details.

Get an untraceable email address like a proton mail one and just use it for mumsnet.

No need to leave.

IamXXHearMeRoar · 18/04/2018 23:17

Illegitimi non carborundum

OldCrone · 18/04/2018 23:27

As others have said, there's no need to leave, just don't give MN any real data.

I use an email which is not related to my real name and is only used for sites like this so I can abandon it easily if I need to.

MN does not know my real name.

I use Opera browser, which has a built-in VPN. Just enable it in the settings after installation.

On my phone, I use the Opera VPN app.

Should those of us who have nothing to lose offer ourselves as sacrificial lambs? I’m already out(ish) and the TRAs can’t take anything from me. Am happy to doxx myself.

We can’t let them take away this space. In silencing us they win. It can’t happen.

Bufferingkisses · 18/04/2018 23:38

Grin I'd love to be outed from here!

Seeing as I have no online presence than this it would prove that there is illegal behaviour.

Bring it on SmileFlowers

AngryAttackKittens · 18/04/2018 23:51

TEA infiltrated site sounds lovely, actually. I'm imagining someone sidling up to randoms and offering them a cuppa.

thebewilderness · 18/04/2018 23:55

ts really annoying....if I'd have left last month as I intended i would be sat here all smug(And yes...i know nobody cares but i like to pretend grin)

I care!

HopScotchy · 18/04/2018 23:56

We made tea of all kinds. It was not appreciated.

Janie143 · 18/04/2018 23:57

You are all CERFS ! Stop literal violence against coffee drinking people Bigots

HopScotchy · 19/04/2018 00:01

Proud cerf. I don't make the rules. Coffee is coffee not tea.

SimplySteve · 19/04/2018 00:02

It would be a real shame to see you go @TheXXFactor . This is undoubtedly part of the damage the offender intended to cause.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 19/04/2018 00:02

Last week I asked MN to remove my posts and my account but changed my mind last minute. They were very understanding although wanted to clarify if I wanted to delete all my usernames (I change every now and then for protection) because that would be an understanding for them.

I changed my mind because of Justine’s stance in The Sunday Times.

However the reason I originally asked to be deleted was because I was threatened (specifically my business) away from MN for being “a TERF” and particularly for promoting the petition. I suspected someone had put 2 + 2 together and worked out from my posting history that it was me. Now, obviously I am not so sure.

This is exactly what TRAs want isn’t it?
The thing is, they know many here are at a stage in life where we have dependants and fully established careers. I don’t want to give in but I also want to pay my bills.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 19/04/2018 00:04

that would be an understanding for them.

^^ should be

that would be an undertaking for them

LightofaSilveryMoon · 19/04/2018 00:04

I believe that the intention of this criminal stunt is to scare women off MN.

Because there is now growing opposition, in mainstream press and blogging, to the proposed stupid and irresponsible changes to the GRA and EA.

Domestic terrorism could be a good description of such behaviour.

Janie143 · 19/04/2018 00:05

Yes it is what they want

LightofaSilveryMoon · 19/04/2018 00:05

Fruit tea is still a con, though. Rubbish stuff.

SimplySteve · 19/04/2018 00:05

I'd also second using a VPN to protect you. Opera has one built-in for free; commercial solutions are available for around £20 a year. I'd be more than happy to point anyone wanting more details to trustworthy companies I'm aware of via PM. (I've been a co-author, technical reviewer, writer, internet analyst, senior development head in the industry).

HopScotchy · 19/04/2018 00:06

People have different risks to take. I will not ask a woman to keep taking risks if she decides it's too much. I'll just take note and get louder to compensate. It's why lots of us are very loud.

CrustyCob · 19/04/2018 00:12

Well, this is exciting.
I'm stopping here for the foreseeable.
Feck 'em. Smile
I've brought a few cans of real ale along, thought it was more appropriate than gin, given the circs and all that.

Oh ! And there are two beardy types outside of my front door, offering to sing.
One has a double bass.
AIBU if I don't let them in?

DarthArts · 19/04/2018 00:20

.

womanhuman · 19/04/2018 00:23

This is from the original days breach thread. Couldn’t agree more.

Threatening Justine didn't work, threatening the advertisers didn't work, so EH has taken this drastic (and evidently pre-meditated) step to frighten women off this forum.
