LizzieSiddal · 03/04/2018 20:47

It’s at 9071

sanluca · 03/04/2018 21:57

Can I ask why the number is so low? Don't get me wrong, I fully support it and I would love to sign, but not a UK resident at the moment. But I don't understand why it is not at tens of thousands. Anything I can do to help?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 03/04/2018 22:42

Tell everyone you know?

I'm not sure it's low. But I think it would be much higher if people actually realised what is being proposed.

NoSquirrels · 03/04/2018 22:59

@sanluca It’s not being directly reported on, or linked to by a celebrity or name with a following on social media. Even the articles that talk about the ‘debate’ don’t link it directly - with the sole exception of an Independent article. Whether this is journalistic policy, or fear of backlash, hard to tell.

I think we just keep talking, grassroots, and sooner or later a tipping point will hit and someone ‘mainstream’ will mention it.

Whether they’ll be coming from a place of good intentions or not it will get it talked about.

It should hit 10K one month from the petition date starting. Then I hope there is strength in numbers and more people will feel willing to share and debate.

In terms of the petitions, it's on page 2 of the open petitions and doing quite well.

Why aren't women flooding to sign it? Some on MN have shared they are worried about putting an identifiable name and address onto the petition because of the active suppression and harassment of women who have been seen to object- however on those threads there has been reassurance that this information is not seen anywhere on the petition site and is under government data protection, so is as safe there as anywhere.

And because at the moment it's only really through MN that it's seeping out to some women. MNetters have linked the petition in comments on newspaper articles but when a journalist mentions the petition in the body of an article, or a well known person has the courage to tweet or mention the petition then it would get out into the public eye. With the people I talk to, so many people just have no idea a) it's happening at all and b) they think it's a few vulnerable transsexual people who have had full reassignment surgery - on another thread I just saw a newly peaked MNetter say in horror that did this really mean showering next to someone with a penis, she thought it meant people who were post surgery. When they realise what's actually under proposal they're horrified. And c) TRAs give very 'edited' versions of what self ID would actually include so deny and reframe. (To be fair, I think many TRA supporters don't fully understand the ramifications themselves and it isn't always intentional misleading.)

Very slow today :(

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 04/04/2018 20:26

Kneedeep
You’re right, it’s just not reaching people.

I think when people learn the difference between transsexuals and which groups are included under the trans umbrella they are almost immediately shocked. Even an AIBU on that topic would peak many.

AuntMsVanillaRose · 04/04/2018 20:27

Question for self-identified feminists.

When a person wants an abortion, feminists are outraged by the notion that two doctors should have to agree to the procedure in order for it to go ahead.

So why is it different if a person seeks gender reassignment? Why is the agreement of doctors deemed so important? Why be against medical gatekeeping in one case and so very strongly in favour of it in the other case?

athingthateveryoneneeds · 04/04/2018 20:44

Not everyone thinks the same on every topic. I don't have a problem with medical gatekeeping in either scenario.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 04/04/2018 21:02

Do you really not understand the difference between an abortion and having a man in a sex segregated female space?

Really?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 04/04/2018 21:03

In what way are those two things similar?

Apart from the two doctors.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 04/04/2018 21:06

Your question just doesn't make any sense.

I like the person performing my smear test to be a woman but I let a man cut my hair. Is that similarly hypocritical?!

And calling yourself Aunt is all kinds of creepy btw. Can we go back to Rachel85/Suzy72/Abbie91?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 04/04/2018 21:07

And I'm also fine with the abortion gatekeeping tbh.

Less so with nonsense.

Ereshkigal · 04/04/2018 21:39

Checkmate, self-identified feminists!! Grin
