Woman is cultural - TRA on Twitter.

What specific aspect of womanhood is it important to exclude Transwomen from, and why?

I'm in a (currently) polite debate with someone on twitter and I asked them to not use Cis to label me. He asked me how it was possible to determine a difference between trans and cis (???) if Cis wasn't used. He then said Woman by definition is 'cultural' and why was it so relevant to definite it?

Please help me answer this one. I'm not as quick thinking as you lot.

You know he is being dishonest, he knows what women and men are.
In law, 'woman' and 'man' are biological sex classes that have nothing to do with gender presentation or sexual orientation, and sex is a protected characteristic covered by the Equality Act.

Humans are a sexually dimorphic species.
Women belong to the class of people who;
Have XX chromosomes
Produce large, non motile gametes that transfer mitochondrial DNA to the offspring
Gestate the young internally in their womb
Give birth through their vagina
Breastfeed the young

Both men and women have a need for single sex spaces and services. Women do not have a prostate gland, do not need prostate screening, cannot get prostate cancer and do not need support groups for prostate cancer survivors.
Men do not have a cervix, so not need PAP smears, do not need to access support groups for survivors of uterine cancer, will never miscarry on a public bathroom.

shedalight · 24/02/2018 00:30

I'd just repeat ' woman - adult human female and maybe ask what is wrong with using transgender to differentiate? (but them I'm not quick and snappy I'm afraid).

Datun · 24/02/2018 00:32

You'll get nowhere.

Woman is an adult human female. Like mare is an adult female horse, and ewe is an adult female sheep.

Ask him how they identify the 117 million girl foetuses in order to abort them, if woman is not based on biology?

Then ask him how the 85,000 women a year in this country identify out of being raped. What can they do to stop that happening?

But, you'll get nowhere. He is a misogynistic twat.

Hackedoffwoman · 24/02/2018 00:34

Women=adult female repeat ad infinitum. Women = of the sex that produces the larger gamete repeat ad infinitum

thebewilderness · 24/02/2018 00:37

The material reality of biology as it affect women is one of many aspects of womanhood trans identified males have no part in.
That is the answer to his rather specious question.

NotTerfNorCis · 24/02/2018 00:38

If woman is cultural and biology is irrelevant then trans and cis are surely meaningless?

thebewilderness · 24/02/2018 00:48

Sorry, I forgot the why.
Because deceiving people is evil.

GrockleBocs · 24/02/2018 00:52

I'd suggest he asks someone suffering the menopause. No matter what the reproductive status afaik all women go through it.

Theshittyendofthestick · 24/02/2018 00:59

I Have had really crappy period pain all day. This is the most 'womanly' thing about me at the moment. I have no make up on and comfy clothes. If anyone says to me right now that being a woman is down to the feelz, I will twat them in the face.
Does that help?

Theshittyendofthestick · 24/02/2018 01:07

Sorry - that came across as quite aggressive. Obvs not aimed at you OP!

GrockleBocs · 24/02/2018 01:13

shitty Flowers nobody in their right mind would have envied the palm sized clots that used to fall out of me either. I can't imagine DH's reaction if he ever lost a clot that size even once, let alone five times a day, one week in three.

Mouthandtrousersall · 24/02/2018 01:18

No man is ever a woman no matter how hard he tries,

Theshittyendofthestick · 24/02/2018 01:21

Thanks Grockle. I am so far away from lovely ladiness it's not even funny!

GrockleBocs · 24/02/2018 01:24

It ain't all mascara and silk undies #womanhood

Valentinesfart · 24/02/2018 01:25

You don't want to be labelled CIS because you don't believe in innate gender and don't feel you have one. Your gender can't by their own definition match your assigned at birth sex.

There is no difference between you and someone who identifies as "agender" other then you're not a wanker.

Valentinesfart · 24/02/2018 01:26

So the only sensible thing would be to say "females" and "people who identify as females".

He can be offended but it's your word. If they change the word to mean anyone who identifies as female, you won't be a female anymore. And you've been one your whole life based on the previous definition and that would be a bit unfair.

Mouthandtrousersall · 24/02/2018 01:30

Give up your longing, or just experience your longing, the lack, the lack the lack, we are all experiencing the lack, none of us are fantastically bestowed with a secure being, and secure food supply and secure aspirations, but actually those that are expecting entitlements that are so unlimited they can actually be so deluded to assume that
embodiment is not good enough for them and others must facilitate a surreal change of that, how desperately greedy the human psyche is.

Theshittyendofthestick · 24/02/2018 01:33

Nicely put mouth

SpringEquinox · 24/02/2018 01:41

They are trying to impose this ridiculous term (cis) upon us - there is no need for actual women to redefine themselves for men's comfort. It should be turned around : If a man does not 'feel' like a man, then let him define himself that way, call himself a brand new term, a NotMan. Explains it sufficiently, I think. He can't call himself a woman or a trans woman or any form of woman because he is not one and can therefore have absolutely no idea what it feels like. With the exception of the vanishingly rare hermaphrodites and intersex, you are what you are and if that doesn't feel right, don't drag everyone else into your conundrum.

Mouthandtrousersall · 24/02/2018 01:48

I try my frolicking best with what I've got.

CisMyArse · 24/02/2018 06:14

He also said that uteri transplant will be available for men in 10 years time so [to paraphrase], watch this space.

I ignored that one.

He then said Woman by definition is 'cultural'

By who's definition?? Not mine or most other people's.

The dictionary makes no cultural references to the word's definition.
Femininity is cultural, feminine is cultural, as are masculine/ity but material reality to describe the sexes has an equal place in our language as philosophical concepts to describe people.

Woman refers to a material reality that describes 51% of the population not an immaterial concept.

If woman is cultural, not physical, get him to define it's meaning (without using the word woman as that would be circular and not defined).

Is he suggesting that no one ever should ever name the two sexes of our species by their physical reality? How will that work out? How would people identify dead bodies?
"Gender unknown, sorry I can't ask them because they're dead"

TheRagingGirl · 24/02/2018 07:12

Ask him to define “man”

Patodp · 24/02/2018 07:19

Ask him how they identify the 117 million girl foetuses in order to abort them, if woman is not based on biology? Then ask him how the 85,000 women a year in this country identify out of being raped. What can they do to stop that happening? But, you'll get nowhere. He is a misogynistic twat Datun's answer, sad but true, gets the point across brilliantly.

The material reality of biology as it affect women is one of many aspects of womanhood trans identified males have no part in
I like bewilderness's reply a lot too.

It's ridiculous how often we have to defend the word "woman" with misogynist double thinkers. I need to start saving some of these replies!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 24/02/2018 07:22

What an idiot. Did his mother give birth to him because of her cultural or biological "experience" as woman?

The uterus transplant argument makes me want to bash his my head against a wall. Biology isn't plug-and-play.
