It’s still not easy being a trans child (Guardian article)

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/05/trans-child-schools-help-transition-prejudice

It's full of the usual BS, along with the usual amount of deleted comments... Is the Guardian ever going to publish the other side of this debate?

"The world has changed in the 30 years since I learned that the third of our four children wished to transition. She had been registered as male at birth and had given no indication that she identified as a girl, or so I thought. Hindsight is a wonderful thing; the signs were there. I had missed them."
Problem is, she doesn't say what the signs were...

"Pre-pubertal children do not need medical intervention, but they do need their identities, and their chosen names and pronouns, to be respected, and to be allowed to dress according to their gender identity, rather than their assigned sex. "
Again, using gender and sex synonymously...

I really need to stop reading this shite!

I wonder what the 'signs' were? If it's about feelings and not about gender stereotypes how can you tell?

BigDeskBob · 06/06/2017 20:40

I've not read the whole article, but the author quotes studies that claim 5% of the population are trans, and 1% are either MTT or ftt. That's a massive increase from any other stats I've seen. Its usually estimated at around 0.3%.

I also love the guardian ability to ask for money from their readers while deleting so many comments.

Reed's 'daughter' now acknowledges he is a man. This says "Niki Reed is heterosexual and went on to marry his female partner as a legal male. He does not publicly support the group his parents started and seems to have dropped out of sight."

And yet the parents are still making a living peddling inaccurate nonsense and propaganda.

Italiangreyhound · 06/06/2017 22:44

"Gender-variant young people must be included in sport and social activities to build their confidence."

I'm all for people identifying as whatever 'gender' they want to but sports, if they are divided, are divided by sex segregation - nothing to do with gender.

Italiangreyhound · 06/06/2017 22:50

Betsy That is an interesting article.

"What’s interesting is that GIRES is basically part of the UK government. They are “partners” with the Surrey and Borders NHS Partnership Foundation Trust which is their largest funder, and they co-produce educational materials on gender for providers together [PDF]."

I wonder how I can get to be part of the government and make my ideas be taken seriously! Wink

cuirderussie · 06/06/2017 22:58

I read it earlier and was heartened to see the vast majority of comments were against this awful practice of harming kids who don't conform to stereotypes.

Terfing · 06/06/2017 23:19

Thanks for that @BetsyM00!

It's probably bad of me, but I did actually laugh out loud at your postBlush. The logical inconsistency of this debate can be funny at times!

Apart from the literacy, this reads like the Daily Mail comments section.

It's a curious world where there's common ground between feminists and bigots.

Miffer · 07/06/2017 00:11

Hey look, somebody came in and called everybody a bigot without addressing a single point.

How articulate and original.

Italiangreyhound · 07/06/2017 00:40

MotherPeresA it is not bigoted to say that sex-segregated sports are segregated by sex! Calling everyone a bigot is a technique for shutting down debate.

The trans agenda can be very hurtful to a lot of people including trans children and transsexuals, who do not toe the party line.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/06/2017 01:12

It's a curious world where there's common ground between feminists and bigots.

Hitler liked Dachshunds, so do I. Unless you're going to tell anyone what you object to, it's sort of pointless.

It's slightly worrying that the people who run GIRES are a physiotherapist and a man with an MBA.

I think I'm right in saying that GIRES are the organisation who provided information in that dreadful CPS endorsed schools' pamphlet. They are also the ones who badgered the Intersex Society for collaboration, who then subsequently had to post an open letter rejecting their overtures as they felt besieged.

They come across to me as a very frightening organisation. Zealots with no applicable medical background.

Datun · 07/06/2017 06:50

It's a curious world where there's common ground between feminists and bigots.

And yes, this one never fails to surprise me. Who in their right mind would ever think that feminists are bigots?? They have supported minorities everywhere, since forever.

If I was aware of a group who were renowned for their analysis, research and support for equality, I would be seriously questioning my opinion on why they may be coming across as bigoted.

ChocChocPorridge · 07/06/2017 08:40

Pre-pubertal children do not need medical intervention, but they do need their identities, and their chosen names and pronouns, to be respected, and to be allowed to dress according to their gender identity, rather than their assigned sex in anything they like that is age/activity-appropriate

There. Fixed that for them

A trans doctor is closing their gender clinic. They were under investigation for malpractice and breaching the duty of care rules. They rushed patients through for surgery and cross-hormones without following the right guidelines.

Origninal story here.

gendertrender.wordpress.com/2013/01/06/london-gender-clinics-dr-richard-curtis-under-investigation-for-allegations-of-medical-misconduct/

The doctor is a staunch antifeminist and merely talks about sex role rejection. The person is a 'gay man in a woman's body'. So a heterosexual female then.

Details about the clinic shutting down are here.

gendertrender.wordpress.com/2017/06/06/dr-richard-curtis-to-close-private-uk-gender-clinic/#comments

One woman was referred to surgery because she identified as Christ.

Datun · 07/06/2017 11:45

And back to the OP's title. 'It's not easy being a trans-child'.

This trans girl would beg to differ. A 15-year-old boy, absolutely no medical treatment, no hormones, no puberty blockers. Just self identifies as a girl. He has just won two girls' state championships.

I wonder what the 'signs' were?

Tea towel on the head, of course! What else?

shinynewusername · 07/06/2017 12:25

This. I think it every time I see the request for money at the end of each Guardian article: do they really think we are going to fund them while they censor us?

Datun · 07/06/2017 12:59

SerfTerf

I wonder what the 'signs' were?

For the doctor who was responsible for pushing people unnecessarily towards surgery, her own 'signs' that she was a man were:

I’ve never been particularly in touch with my emotional side. I’ve never wanted children, or a white wedding like most women dream of, or a man to take care of me. Instead, you were more likely to find me fitting a kitchen or tiling the bathroom.”

ALittleBitOfButter · 07/06/2017 13:01

The comments are good, from what i've read so far. Help people reach peak trans.

JigglyTuff · 07/06/2017 13:27

"Hormone-blockers to arrest unwanted development of sex characteristics may be quite literally life-saving: they are safe and reversible."

Bullshit. They don't actually know. www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/when-transgender-kids-transition-medical-risks-are-both-known-and-unknown/

No wonder their son wants nothing to do with them :(

JigglyTuff · 07/06/2017 13:29

The Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health are holding a conference on Monday about trans children. Both GIRES and Mermaids are speaking.

EnormousDormouse · 07/06/2017 13:52

Bloody hell Datun if that's the criteria I'm a man!
A very manly man as I can add an engineering degree and a job in aerospace to the list.
Best tell DP, I suppose.

Lottapianos · 07/06/2017 14:02

'I’ve never been particularly in touch with my emotional side. I’ve never wanted children, or a white wedding like most women dream of, or a man to take care of me. Instead, you were more likely to find me fitting a kitchen or tiling the bathroom.”'

Please give me actual strength. And a bucket of gin.

Such utter fucking stupidity everywhere you turn on this issue. Its beyond depressing. Although I agree the comments on the Guardian article are heartening

SerfTerf · 07/06/2017 14:03

And I'm a man who wanted children (don't men ever want children in that philosophy?)
