How can you prove that thoughts inside your head exist? You can't. This poor poor woman was forced to remain pregnant.

Hope the link works

The thought of being forced to remain pregnant against my will is one of the most distressing things I can imagine.
How absolutely awful for her. Angry

Mmolly2013 · 16/08/2014 16:18

That sounds terrible but at the same time could she not have travelled to England for an abortion if she wAnted it that much.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 16/08/2014 16:23

Its not always that simple mMolly. The poor woman was suicidal and distressed. In a week where social media is full of Robin Williams suicide and urges to talk to someone, this woman talked and was dismissed.

Mmolly2013, do you realise how astoundingly expensive it is for women to travel to the UK for abortions from Ireland? There's time off, travel, hotels for at least 3 days even before you factor in the actual procedure. With the Irish economy being a bit crap, swanning off to the UK is often well out of most women's reach, no matter how much they want it.

howdoimakehimnoticeme · 16/08/2014 16:28

mmolly2013 - have you any idea of the cost of the travel to England, as well as the emotional distress the whole thing would cause?

JennyOnTheBlocks · 16/08/2014 16:32

A suicidal person would probably be denied freedom to travel, at least by air

Every day there is something that makes me wonder if there has been any real progress with women's rights #Ineedfeminismbecause...

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 16/08/2014 16:39

For every tiny scrap of progress there seems to be a massive leap in oppression.
I wonder has she been put on medication and under some sort of mental health care team? If she is then does that prove the panel of doctors wrong?

OP posts:
SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 16:40

The panel was right in their assessment though if you look at the facts. The woman didn't commit suicide , I am not suggesting she didn't feel like it though.

CaptChaos · 16/08/2014 16:44

She went on hunger strike.

Not the action of someone who is feeling in tip top mental health really, is it?

What they seem to have told her is that feeling suicidal doesn't constitute a mental illness and so, tough, remain pregnant. We could do a whole other thread on how women's mental health problems are written off by the medical establishment.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 16/08/2014 16:49

Going on hunger strike I would count as an attempted suicide, wouldn't most people? Certainly not the action of someone capable of rational thinking anyway.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/08/2014 17:54

Oh, how awful.

soon - but we don't know yet. Sad Some people are suicidal for months or years before finally committing suicide.

SevenZarkSeven · 16/08/2014 22:25

SoonToBeSix

"The panel was right in their assessment though if you look at the facts. The woman didn't commit suicide"

This is like the witch test in the olden days isn't it? If she floats she's a witch burn her. If she drowns she wasn't a witch.

So if the woman had committed suicide, that would have been good proof that she was suicidal and she should have had the abortion but whoops it's too late now she's dead.

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 22:34

Well no not like that at all because she didn't commit suicide and is alive . Where as the woman in your witch analogy would be dead either way.

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 22:36

Lrd I am not saying she wasn't suicidal rather she didn't commit suicide before the baby was born so the abortion wasn't necessary to save her life at the moment in time.

Letthemtalk · 16/08/2014 22:37

Soontobesix, are you saying that this is therefore a good system?? That a panel of assessors are able to tell whether someone will actually carry out a suicide attempt successfully?

AnyaKnowIt · 16/08/2014 22:38

Wow, what a choice

Forced to give birth or die

Makes me ashamed to be Irish

SevenZarkSeven · 16/08/2014 22:39

So as long as she doesn't kill herself before the baby is born that's all well and good?

That really does reduce the woman to nothing more than an incubator.

5madthings · 16/08/2014 22:40

Oh well she didn't kill herself that's ok. Never mind the months of mental anguish she must have suffered and the c section she had to have. And what about the baby now is the woman to raise it or to go through the trauma of giving it up for adoption.

The stress of this may STILL cause her to commit suicide. Maybe the only reason she didn't was because family or friends Sat with her and kept her safe.

Ffs this is barbaric.

CaptChaos · 16/08/2014 22:43

According to the BBC, the baby has been taken into care. Where it will no doubt be adopted by one of the judges that forced it's mother to go through this whole charade.

to misquote Seven

5madthings · 16/08/2014 22:45

Forcibly taken into care?

I mean if the woman decides she can and wants to keep the baby will they let her?

What a mess.

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 22:47

No I don't think a panel if assessors are able tell if someone is suicidal sometimes they will be wrong. I am however glad that they were right on this occasion and both mother and baby are alive.

SoonToBeSix · 16/08/2014 22:47

Of not if

5madthings · 16/08/2014 22:49

You are glad a woman has Been forced to stay pregnant and give birth against her will? Well arent you a love?!!

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 16/08/2014 22:50

It seems her mental health is disposable, shrug of the shoulders, it dosen't really matter. Who is going to going to hold her together? The panel of experts, the pro lifers, the Catholic Church? I won't hold my breath.

OP posts:
passmethewineplease · 16/08/2014 22:56

Nice, your pleased a woman was forced to carry a pregnancy she didn't wan, glad she was forced to Give birth and then go through what she's been through?

Nice.

Fucking stupid barbaric system.
