I'd like to start a thread for those who have finished reading Onyx Storm and want to chat about it all- as such THIS THREAD WILL INCLUDE SPOILERS.

Do not read this thread if you don't want spoilers relating to Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and/or Onyx Storm!!!

This should be long enough I'm hoping to hide any spoilers from anyone who accidentally clicks through!

I’m leaning towards Garrick because there was a mortally injured brown dragon and I don’t want it to be Riddoc… why else mention it was brown?
I wonder too if watching xaden struggle but ultimately not give in made him think he could control it too, he was on the verge of burning out when he last featured so maybe thinking he could just use a little and still be ok?

44PumpLane · 11/02/2025 11:26

I struggled with the last few chapters too- it got so fast paced but also RY kept switching to referring to characters by their surnames or by referencing their dragons- I absolutely have not committed everyone's names and dragons to memory so it got a bit tough to follow along at the end.

I'm going to re read from chapter 50, as I saw someone online noting this was a good place to reread from if you need to firm it all up in your mind. Also I'm going to ring out a cheat sheet of everyone's full names and dragons- I didn't want to do it before finishing in case any of them gave anything away!

Oh, another theory I've seen is whether Naolin is the brother- Xade would have thought he was dead.

There is lots of references to Tairn "losing a rider like that" and how no one talks about it so we don't actually know what happened there.

RY has said that if you think about it logically, noone would sacrifice themselves for a person they weren't connected to, so we're Brennan and Naolin lovers and Naolin channeled from the Earth to save Brennan's life? Therefore is he the brother at the end?

I need to reread!!

On another note- that Xaden POV fan fic I mentioned before is brilliant- I spent a 9 hour flight reading it (unheard of for me as I usually sit and watch films) and am still reading it in the evening, it's so good!

I feel like I need to read it again. I loved the first two but was actually really disappointed by this one. The writing is not great, far too many references to his sodding "amber flecked eyes" and too many characters to keep track of that I don't care about. I do wonder if this was rushed out to satisfy fans. I also find the length and graphic nature of the sex scenes unnecessary...we get it, he's hot and they have a bond but there's only so many times I need to read how many fingers he has inside her 😕. I know some young teens that love this style of fantasy but I'm hesitant to recommend the series..I just feel it could have been toned down without losing anything.

44PumpLane · 11/02/2025 16:06

Oh that's quite interesting, I felt like there wasn't much in the way of sex scenes in any of the three books 😂 but at the same time I can't recommend it to certain people because the scenes exist at all!

I agree I definitely need to reread Onyx, part of me read it perhaps quicker than I otherwise would have in order to avoid spoilers through social media, so on a reread I'll be able to take a bit more time and definitely print of a "who's who"!

This one irritated me and I really liked the first one and most of the second book. All the island hopping with nothing to show for it, only red shirts dying, too much ridiculous sex (at one point I was trying to work out how Violet could be twisting her head around to kiss him but he appeared to be in front of her, and then I gave up trying to make it make sense), too many filler plot points. General Aetos was just a poor man's Melchek (is that right?) from book 2, and I was very annoyed by the king just pardoning them all when they got back from the islands and there were no repercussions. Why, for that matter, are all the generals power-crazed psychopathic idiots? Why do Violet and Xaden break so much furniture when they shag? I wouldn't be inviting them back to stay in my island paradise spare room. Why did Xaden decide that if he could not channel for 76 days he was ok to shag again - why such a specific number, which appeared to be based on nothing? I also eye-rolled so hard at Violet going from struggling to split her lightning bolts into two and aim them, to suddenly being able to split them into 10 and kill 10 wyvern with one stroke. Ultimately, this felt like all filler and nothing actually advanced in the plot, apart from Xaden is now a worse/proper venin.

phlossy · 12/02/2025 08:02

I struggled a bit with the first 3/4 of the book, I felt like I was waiting for something to happen. And a lot of island hopping, island names, dragon and rider names, swapping between first and last. That being said, I am more in these for the romance side of the romantasy than the fantasy side (I do love the fantasy side, I'm just not a hard core fantasy reader)

Getting more towards the end of the book I did start getting much more into it and feeling torn between wanting to read it quickly to see what happens and wanting to savour it.

When Andarna left though that was so sad

I think maybe as others said, with a proper character/dragon list and map/Island info I could reread it and soak it all in rather than get frustrated with the world building because I need to know what happens with x and v

OneAndDon3 · 12/02/2025 09:18

I think the 76 days was related to how long JB had gone without channelling from the earth. X says something about it when he breaks at 73 days and I assumed that was information that he got from JB under interrogation.

I agree that this book felt more like filler.

WilderHawthorn · 12/02/2025 11:08

Quite surprised by the thinking that this is a filler book, when we've learned that Violet's dad almost committed her to a temple (which will have implications), her mum knew Theophanie somehow, Panchek turns Venin and is the inside source who's been feeding the Sage information, Andarna's heritage etc.

I do agree that we don't see enough of the side characters to get to know them better, Dain in particular felt like a plot device & not a person/character. However RY has said that everything is from Violet's POV, so aside from the chapters at the end from Imogen and Rhiannon's POV, we only 'see' what Violet does

44PumpLane · 12/02/2025 16:20

I've either missed the Panchek turning Venin, or have forgotten it in the time since reading!!!

I think I'm going to do a reread of all 3 with the printed maps and characters/dragons and take my time over all three (I power read the three books as I'd not heard of Fourth Wing until just before Christmas so got the first 2 books for Christmas and started them mid Jan)!!!

I think it will be interesting to reread the first and second with all the new info I have- like could you tell JB was Venin in Fourth Wing?

I think it was in one of the last chapters, the one in xadens pov. I’m not sure he’s turned venin, but he has definitely sold them out to the venin.
it also says in the same chapter that Berwyn is supposed to be dead, so adds to the theory that he’s Naolin.

44PumpLane · 12/02/2025 17:27

Ah thank you!

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/02/2025 17:39

I think Garrick as Bodhi flew off somewhere - he would know where he needed to be to help Xaden. I think he has seen some form of cure but isn't sure it will work, so Xaden, Garrick and Bodhi are off on a giant quest, leaving Violet to rebuild

Arraminta · 12/02/2025 19:29

Okay, so have been pondering and it's definitely Brennan who is Xaden's 'new brother' [gavel]

In Xaden's POV chapter at the end of Onyx Storm he says of his Sage 'now he can use another sibling against me'. Note the use of the word sibling - we already know that the Sage used Xaden's love for Violet to make him turn venin. Then he used Mira (a Sorrengail sibling) to trick and trap them. So it makes perfect sense that the Sage is now going to use Brennan (the final Sorrengail sibling) to intensify his power over Xaden.

Plus, Brennan has been privy to Xaden's suffering as a new venin for months and has tried many times to heal him. So he knows exactly what Xaden has gone through.

OneAndDon3 · 12/02/2025 20:20

Oh now that's an interesting theory.

Soubriquet · 13/02/2025 09:15

44PumpLane · 06/02/2025 09:33

Also I can't vouch for how good it may or may not be, but someone has written a Fanfic Fourth Wing from Xadens POV which is available on AO3 it's by a user called belle_beebee and it's called "Xaden POV: Fourth Wing"

On good reads it's been rated 863 times and has a rating of 4.47 so I'm definitely going to give it a bash!

I’ve just started this last night and it’s really really good. I don’t usually read fanfics of books. Tv series, movies yeah, but not books because they are usually perfect, but this is just chef’s kiss

Definitely worth reading

link for those who want it

I'm about 80% of the way through it- I solidly read it on my flight to America and will finish it in the way back- and I'm really impressed with it to be fair. It's definitely scratching and itch!

I was able to download the kindle format so have been reading it on Kindle which has been super useful. (Just need to find someone who can share the Manacled fanfic in Kindle format too)!

On other news, I'm embarking now on 'When the moon hatched' but seriously struggling to get into it. Anyone else?

I’ve tried, but a few chapters in and I’m struggling!
I do recommend The Assassins Blade though, I really enjoyed that!

I have this on my list. I hope it improves for you!

My DH thought he was doing a really nice thing for me, he knew I had an Onyx Storm hangover so bought me a highly rated romantasy book to cheer me up. I had really high hopes as the reviews were brilliant but it's basically lesbian porn!!

I'm still reading it 😂

phlossy · 13/02/2025 15:17

44PumpLane could you explain to me like I'm 5 how to get this on kindle :)

Sure thing ......you will have a charging cable that you use with your kindle, grab that!

Go on your laptop/desktop computer
Go to the link provided by @Soubriquet a few posts up
Click on the title "Xaden POV: Fourth Wing" which will take you into the book on AO3
Click on "Entire Work"
Hit "Download" and you want to choose the format AZW3 for reading on Kindle
Once you've downloaded, stick your charging cable into your kindle and into your computer and unlock/wake up your kindle
Your computer should see your kindle as a device/folder location and you will be able to drag and drop the downloaded book into the Kindle device location

You should then be able to see "Xaden POV: Fourth Wing" as one of your books that you can select when you unplug your kindle

I must caveat this by saying my kindle is ridiculously old so there is a chance that this process may not work with the more modern ones, but I reckon it's a pretty standard method so worth having a bash?

@phlossy If the last part of my directions needs to be broken down just shout.....I've just realized I've made the assumption you know what I mean by drag and drop into the Kindle folder location!

I have Faebound on my list to try next, or ACOTAR, but @SerenityNowSerenityNow do tell us what you're reading! 😁

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 13/02/2025 19:12

It's called 'House of Crimson Hearts'.

It's okay but DH was so pleased with himself I'm going to make sure I finish it 😂
