I loved Lucy by the Sea. It's a lovely book and quite peaceful I thought

Yellowface, I thought was excellent. I really enjoyed it. It was sort of grim, dark humour with an unreliable narrator. Themes of racial tension, cultural appropriation, social media toxicity and how the publishing industry works.

I have only just started Daughter of the Moon Goddess which is a fantasy type novel based on the Chinese legend of Chang'e, who lives on the moon as a prisoner. So far it's lovely, but I'm only a few pages in.

I love anything by Elizabeth Strout, too.

oh, I also just finished “No one tells you this” by Glynis Macnicol, (autobiography) really good, about a new paradigm for women.

(I read fast and was travelling last week, so I can get through books.)

I love Jodi Picoult. Highly recommend 19 Minutes, Mad Honey and The Storyteller.

Just read - Verity by Colleen Hoover (didn't like)

Next Read - Seven Summers by Paige Toon

CharlotteBog · 29/06/2024 09:43

Just read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, currently reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks, currently listening to Long Island by Colm Tóbín.

MavisPennies · 29/06/2024 09:45

Just finished Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, which I enjoyed but probably won't remember next week and normal rules don't apply by Kate Atkinson which I loved - I think her writing especially the non detective story stuff just gets better and better.
Currently reading the new Zadie Smith which I'm enjoying

Yes I loved it (despite the violence) and I am not a gamer. DS, who has played the game, was waxing lyrical about how well done it was and faithful to the spirit ot the game. He got me to have a go and it did nothing for me.

GWATG has been made into a film - it's good too.

Deliberationdivinationdesperation · 29/06/2024 09:51

Recently read The Beach Cafe by Lucy Diamond

Currently reading Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

I'm not sure what's up next - I really want to read Blue Sisters by Coco Mellor so maybe that!

I liked the ending some don't - my husband for one! It felt nice and finished for me but again it's like anything to do with books - subjective 😂

has anyone read his Felix Castor novels? They are excellent. Detective with a paranormal element. I would highly recommend

Mothership4two · 29/06/2024 09:54

@DontBiteTheCat

Just read - Verity by Colleen Hoover (didn't like)

Me neither. Utter tosh with a lame ending.

Tom Lake is a bit like Lucy by the sea, if you're looking for recommendations

Johnhasalongmoustache · 29/06/2024 09:56

The only Anne Patchett book I liked was the one the Dutch house all the other ones have been so complicated. I’ve found it hard to get into them.

No33 · 29/06/2024 09:58

Great idea for a thread!

Finished "Hades and Persephone" was not what I was expecting, was rather spicy

Current "The White Hotel" fiction but about a patient of Freud's. Very good, and beautifully written.

Next, I'm not sure. I need something easier going. Might read an old shakespeare.

Borka · 29/06/2024 09:59

Just finished The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Currently reading Wise Children by Angela Carter

Not sure what I'll read next, and my recommendation is to not read Lessons in Chemistry!
