We get books donated so I read whatever comes in.
Just finished Lisa Jewel -Now I found You and Susan Hill -Various Haunts of Men

Really liked both. Perfect sat in the sun reads and both weren't too predictable.

@IAmAnAdultHumanFemale

has anyone read his Felix Castor novels? They are excellent. Detective with a paranormal element. I would highly recommend

[frantically looks them up and orders the first one from the library]

The only Anne Patchett book I liked was the one the Dutch house all the other ones have been so complicated. I’ve found it hard to get into them.

That's interesting as I have only read The Dutch House and loved it! Such a beautiful book. I will maybe get another of hers from the library instead of buying. I struggle with complicated books tbh. Crime and Punishment took me years and several attempts to finish

Currently reading Wise Children by Angela Carter

Not sure what I'll read next, and my recommendation is to not read Lessons in Chemistry!

Oh no! I'd heard it was good from a school mum which made me spend my waterston3s gift card on it 😩😂. I'll give it a go since I've got it now

I have read those two Maggie O'Farrell books and loved both. Think Hamnet is my favourite of the two

I picked that one up as a Kindle deal ages ago. Maybe that will be my next read?

I loved it and read it on the recommendation of three people in one week, got it for my mum who loved it too - so you may well enjoy it!

InglouriousBasterd · 29/06/2024 10:27

Read - Death comes to Pemberley, PD James

Reading - (right about to start!) Transcription, Kate Atkinson

Next - I have an embarrassing number to choose from due to a local amazing charity book shop! Possibly Shrines of Gaiety, Kate Atkinson or the Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Rachel Joyce

SpikeWithoutASoul · 29/06/2024 10:29

Just finished Father by Elizabeth Von Arnim - loved it
Reading The Lark by E Nesbitt and loving that too

SilverSimca · 29/06/2024 10:29

Just read Leviathan, by Rosie Andrews
Reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow which I am not blown away by despite a friend raving about it
Next (in fact have already started it as not getting on with Tomorrow, although I will plough on) Companion Piece by Ali Smith

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/06/2024 10:51

I’ve got three on the go at the moment, all very different.
The Doors Unhinged by John Densmore about the court case between Doors band members. The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht (just started it). And How To Make Love Like A Porn Star, the autobiography of Jenna Jameson.
Have just finished When The Dust Settles by Lucy Easthope (awesome).

@SpikeWithoutASoul Am loving EvA, just discovered her!

It’s got an E.M Forster vibe and that same sense of languid Edwardian summertime that I love!

I might have spoilt The Enchanted April as I found the film on YouTube and watched it, but I’ll try and finish this weekend. Glad to know there are other good ones by her.

anon2022anon · 29/06/2024 12:43

Just read- the Hating game for book club. Rubbish book! None of this is true, Lisa Jewell, was good, but not great.

Now reading- the ink black heart, JK/ Galbraith. Love the Cormorant series, but I struggle to get into big massive books, so I'm avoiding it at the minute.

Next books- strange Sally Diamond (book club, my choice) & the good bad girl.

I have just added the Felix Castor book and the Girl with all the gifts to my Amazon after this thread, so thanks ☺️

Oh, I didn't think anyone else had ever read 'The Making of a Marchioness'. My friend Richard who went on the be the Pepys Librarian gave me a copy 50 years ago. He was always good for recherché reading matter. He also started me on Nancy Mitford - not so much celebrated then - and Emily Eden. Emily Eden was writing in the mid 19th century and anyone who like Jane Austen will like her book 'The Semi-Attached Couple' and 'The Semi-Detached House'. Anyone else read these?
I loved 'Wise Children' too.

Just finished: 'On The Cusp' by David Kyanaston. An examination of three months in the summer of 1962 when the world turned.

Currently reading (but not for much longer) 'In Remembrance of Past Times.' I'm half way through but running out of steam. I've tried before but I don't think I've got the right sort of mind for Proust.

Reading next: Not sure but something cheerful.
