Petite support for losing a few pounds/getting to our 'happy' size

ACuppaAlwaysHelps · 06/10/2024 16:13

Hi all. Following on from the thread that @SprayPaint started yesterday, a few of us (@Waiting9 @Horriblehistoree @FaceofSpades) seemed keen to have a thread to support each other in reaching our weight loss/body shape/fitness/health goals.

All petites are welcome on this thread, but it seemed like it would be particularly helpful to have a corner of Mumsnet for those of us who are petite/small framed and officially a 'healthy weight' but know we feel/look better a few pounds lighter (which would still be within a healthy weight/not underweight).

Maybe we can share goals, progress, struggles, things that are working, etc.? It would also be lovely to hear from any petites who are at a 'happy weight' and what you are doing to be successful.

Someone (maybe @FaceofSpades?) posted some helpful thoughts on the thread yesterday.

Please share how you all think this thread could be helpful.

Feel free to share as much or little as you like. Height, current weight, goal weight or other body measurements, nutrition, calories, exercise, NSV, etc.

Back into gear time...
Checked in on the scales and while they're up, this peak is lower than the last peak of disruption, which is positive and hormonal state is at the heavier end anyway.

Better than I thought it could be!

Well done!

I appear to have gained 7 pounds in less than a week!!! That can’t be real fat gain can it? The only ‘extras’ were 2 hot cross buns, half (yes half - I think it’s 50g) of one of those small Cadbury buttons Easter eggs and I didn’t properly track/weigh on Nutracheck my dinner on Sunday. I said no to pretty much everything that other family members & friends were eating and drinking over the last few days.

The weight I saw on the scales this morning was close to being the highest weight I’ve ever seen (and I’ve been working so hard on both diet and exercise for the last 6 months). It’s hard isn’t it, being short, small framed and early 40s?! Right, moan over, I’ve already done a Caroline Girvan workout this morning and have tuna salad prepared for lunch.

Down another 3lb.
I need to get back to exercise after a break due to health and think that I will start small.

WombatChocolate · 22/04/2025 09:23

I will get on the scales later today.
After reaching my target of 8st 101b a couple of weeks ago, I have allowed myself a treats weekend over Easter - tried not to binge but have had some crème eggs, cakes and rather nice cheese board a couple of times. Hoping the damage isn’t more than a couple of pounds and I can shift them fairly quickly.

The trouble is, Easter choc remaining the house and will call to me. One if the ways I was helping myself was not having stuff in the house. I will urge my family to gobble it fast and try to give mine away!

ItIsAlwaysSwingsAndRoundabouts · 22/04/2025 09:59

@ACuppaAlwaysHelpsdefinitely won’t be fat gain, you might find upping your water intake helps. Sounds like you’ve been doing so well. I have found since entering the dreaded 40s weight seems to love going up rather than down ☹️

I have had a 2 weeks of eat whatever you want and no real workouts during that time. Think I’ve just felt tired with the constant ‘shouldn’t have that, ohhh too many calories’ regime; and as it was Easter holidays I gave up. Interestingly, I went up by about 2 pounds, it is a gain but I was honestly expecting much higher gain. Obviously if I carry on it’ll be 2 pounds every fortnight and we will be back to where it all started. But I have binged and overeaten all the foods I love, and don’t feel restricted, which is a nice feeling. I also find if I’ve had my excessive eating weeks, when I do drop calories the pounds seem to shift a lot easier. It isn’t something I would recommend though, can’t imagine it being good for my overall metabolic health.

My weight has gone up about a kilo and a half this week to 58.something. I have definitely eaten more treats (it's easter!) but at the same time, I'm looking more and more toned. The scanner at the gym isn't working at the mo, but think I need to get on that and get some measurements. Despite being 5'1, I think I am quite large framed, so my aim isn't really to be particularly petite, just not flabby. Like a working pony!

WombatChocolate · 22/04/2025 10:12

Following my post about an hour ago, relieved to say the Easter ‘enjoyment’ has only added 0.5 1b as of todays reading.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/04/2025 12:02

I did well at holding off on Creme Eggs this year. I just bought a 5 pack to share with DH on Saturday.

He'll end up helping out the DCs with their eggs. They're not chocoholics so I just got them a smallish main egg and a "hunt" pack of smaller eggs. Being secondary age, they're not getting inundated from every direction like they used to be.

It is natural for our intake of food to waver around.

It's weird being a Tuesday. DCs are back to school, but some locally are still in holiday mode so it's not quite back to normal routines.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 22/04/2025 12:18

Ugh I'm up 3lbs 😩 I honestly didn't even over indulge that much! I had a couple of glasses of bubbly on Sunday and no Easter egg I got a small chocolate bunny and ate the rear end off it 😆
However, I made trifle for dessert and had a larger serving than I should - and had another helping of it yesterday. DH has polished off what was left so at least that's that temptation out of the house.
Back on it now and I'm not going to weigh myself again until the weekend. Lots of water, walking and portion control is my prescription. When I think of what I used to eat & drink right up to my 40s really... oh well I have to just accept the new normal for me. But it's hard!!

BogRollBOGOF · 22/04/2025 17:29

We had an extended family gathering at the weekend, some of whom I hadn't seen in a long time. Everyone else there was 50+ (apart from the children). The correlation between activity level and body mass was very strong, with those who've been long-term active having the strongest advantage. There wasn't anyone having an easy pass on genes there, it was all about active lifestyle and general moderation.

Fortunately no "teeny-tiny" appetites and being aghast at people eating anything more than a lettuce leaf though 😂

Hoolahoophop · 23/04/2025 08:39

Morning all, Easter Holidays (more the school holidays than the Easter weekend to be honest) have wreaked havoc on me. But they are back to school now and normal behavior can resume.

I have been down on steps a lot as off work, or driving kids to clubs and onto work (usually i walk them to school and then on to work) so its all been harder to achieve any loss. But the scales are not too bad. about 1.5lb increase (downside is that on current trends that will take me 3 weeks to loose!) Stead commitment will continue.

I'm looking forward to finding the time to get back to running.

Christine1998 · 23/04/2025 21:27

I’ve hd some annual leave added on to the easter holidays so have been off work a week in total, which has totally thrown me out of routine, as i’ve allowed myself some treats, a couple of lunches out, and we’ve also had a night with friends which inc copious amounts of alcohol and snacks, i got weighed this morn and think its about 2lb on 🙈 back at work tomorrow so nipped to the shop tonight for salad items, and marinated some chicken tikka for tea tomorrow, normally i’d not have bothered as its only 2 days and i’d have said not worth it as i’ll need to buy again at the weekend as it doesn't last long date wise, but i’m determined to get back on it before my usual sat morn weigh in. I did intend to run every day but only managed 2 as felt lethargic and tired, suppose thats all the crap i’ve eaten, plus i needed to reset after a stressful time, and not sleeping well so as i’ve not needed to get up for work i’ve not set an alarm to try and catch up and not put pressure on myself.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/04/2025 08:08

Peak of disruption trending downwards. Hormones not optimal. Back in the right direction.

I love the scales sending the measurements to my phone and the graphs updating to show the trends.

Hoolahoophop · 25/04/2025 09:30

@BogRollBOGOF I am very envious of your clever scales, I really want some that are compatible with my garmin app. But i think that's only the garmin scales which are very, very spendy.

Fibrous · 25/04/2025 09:38

Seems like my weight gain was just a blip, down to 56.4kg now, bmi 23.5.

I have one of those wifi garmin scales, i've got about ten years of data on it, it's very handy!

Radiolala · 25/04/2025 10:23

Up 3 lbs in 3 days 😂 I am quite constipated and I’m not sleeping well so will up my water intake and try and tackle my sleep.

I went for some £26 scales rather than the Garmin compatible. The price gap just wasn't worth it to get the data straight into Garmin Connect.

Hoolahoophop · 25/04/2025 13:15

@BogRollBOGOF I can see that, I have a market place search set up and I keep hoping that i will be able to find a nearly new bargain! But your compromise is a lot more sensible!

Good luck with getting a bargain. I'd like to think that if Garmin could see my body composition, it would be a bit kinder with its feedback 😂

But then again, Garmin is a cruel taskmaster 🤣

It hasn't been a business as usual week. I've eaten moderately but haven't quite had the mojo to eat optimally. In good news, it's been a good week on my running and my first week really on it with my newish HM plan (I'm on good enough form not to be worrying about the first couple of weeks in terms of performance)

Storynanny1 · 26/04/2025 10:11

i seem to be maintaining well over the last couple weeks, steady at around 8 st 11lb so i’m very happy with that. Spring and summer clothes have all had a try on and they fit so much better.
Ironically my knee arthritis is now feeling worse! Which was my main reason for losing weight.

ObelixtheGaul · 28/04/2025 16:22

I feel awful. I have hit 9 stone and can't stop eating crap. How do I get back on track?

VeraWangTea · 28/04/2025 22:02

Can I join?

Im 5f4 and i used to hover around 8st 4. I currently dare not weigh myself as i am going to guess I’m around 9st 6/7. Early menopause and going to full time work and an injury has really hit me. I hate my body and hate how clothes feel.

I did IF for a while and it helped but I started to worry it was messing me up a bit. So now I am trying to just do 12-12. But my biggest downsides are:

  • Eating between meals out of boredom when WFH
  • Big portion sizes/having seconds
  • Alcohol and the resulting carbs overload

After Easter holidays, a birthday celebration and a weekend away with girlfriends I am in a state. Feel so horrible.

This is the worst I’ve felt ever.

Does anyone not weigh themselves and just go from how they feel/how clothes feel? Or am I just in massive denial and could I be heavier than I think I am? I just can’t face how miserable it’s going to make me feel.

VeraWangTea · 28/04/2025 22:04

Also can anyone recommend an app to record what you eat?

How you feel is a good gage, but you might find it isn't as bad as you think. I've just fallen off a cliff and hoping the scales will motivate me.
