Petite support for losing a few pounds/getting to our 'happy' size

ACuppaAlwaysHelps · 06/10/2024 16:13

Hi all. Following on from the thread that @SprayPaint started yesterday, a few of us (@Waiting9 @Horriblehistoree @FaceofSpades) seemed keen to have a thread to support each other in reaching our weight loss/body shape/fitness/health goals.

All petites are welcome on this thread, but it seemed like it would be particularly helpful to have a corner of Mumsnet for those of us who are petite/small framed and officially a 'healthy weight' but know we feel/look better a few pounds lighter (which would still be within a healthy weight/not underweight).

Maybe we can share goals, progress, struggles, things that are working, etc.? It would also be lovely to hear from any petites who are at a 'happy weight' and what you are doing to be successful.

Someone (maybe @FaceofSpades?) posted some helpful thoughts on the thread yesterday.

Please share how you all think this thread could be helpful.

Feel free to share as much or little as you like. Height, current weight, goal weight or other body measurements, nutrition, calories, exercise, NSV, etc.

Moring all, good work BogRollBOGOF hang in there Octopus45 and Fibrous, ACuppaAlwaysHelps how have you got on finding heart rate raising exercise?

I'm feeling goo this morning, my cholesterol lowering diet seems to be helping with bloating and energy. Its filling and satisfying and the scales are lowering. This morning I fitted in a 25 minute jog and 10 minute Pilates routine. My weight is back at 55.2kg. My lowest this year was 54.2 so getting closer after a massive spike over house move and summer holidays.

Yesterday I bought some dates (having resisted them since childhood Christmases when mum bought them and I thought they looked gross.) Very tasty mid afternoon snack!

Sorry all - it’s been a busy couple of weeks. Just catching up now on some of your replies to me.

@BogRollBOGOF Thanks for the recommendations of using a weighted vest for low impact aerobics. I’ve done this for the last week. It’s still not really got my heart rate up much, but it must be doing me more good than not using it!

@Hoolahoophop Yes, my heart rate seems to stay quite low a lot of the time. It’s consistently 39 for resting. I’ve deliberately been paying more attention to it this week. Some of my steps are ‘daily life’ steps but still quite fast and/or carrying things. Yesterday I deliberately did a 5000ish step walk with a 9kg weighted vest and my average heart rate was only 65bpm! I’m not overly obsessed by this. I’ve just found it interesting since getting my Garmin a few weeks ago and it maybe makes a bit of sense for me about why it is so slow for me to lose a few pounds.

Well done @BogRollBOGOF on still trending downwards.

@Hoolahoophop It sounds like you’re also making good progress. Well done!

My Happy Scale app is also still showing a (very slow!) downward trend. The moving average is currently 8st5.5.

@ACuppaAlwaysHelps have you ever had your heart rate checked by the GP? I know it can sometimes be naturally slow, but can also be down to a few different things that might not be a worry now, but may be in the future. (My DC as a 5 year old had the resting heart rate of an adult by GP was fine with that, though they did do some testing first to make sure)

ACuppaAlwaysHelps · 27/09/2025 10:26

@Hoolahoophop No, never had it checked by GP….? Maybe I should at some point. Although it does seem from this thread that a low heart rate seems quite common with us petites?

Maybe. Mine hovers around 52 at rest which is not bad for a 40 something year old but under 40 I think might be worth checking, definitely mentioning if you ever have to go to the GP for symptoms like tiredness, dizziness, brain fog. All the stuff my peri age is giving me!

BogRollBOGOF · 27/09/2025 15:19

Post-run weigh in of 63.4kg this morning.
(Pre-run was 63.8kg so also good)

Consistent and patient is working. Slowly 😂

Fibrous · 27/09/2025 15:37

I went to the gp about my low resting heart rate and she was very unbothered. Mine gets up very high if I run up a hill or something though, I can get to 180 or so, so it does work.

I'm on my third holiday this month so not expecting great things for the scales but back to normal next week.

Hoolahoophop · 29/09/2025 09:09

Hmmm, family birthday at the weekend. So despite my 5k run, some serious hard work in the garden and a nice weekend total of 28k steps....im up a whole kg. I'll have to be very sensible in my choices this week to make up for it. But we did eat ALL the cake and all the left overs so at least there is nothing tempting about.

I might make a banana loaf today for the kids to hoover up this week. But what I really need to do is make apple and pear based foods as our trees are loaded and I have a glut. Any healthy ideas out there?

BogRollBOGOF · 30/09/2025 06:31

Using oats to make crumbles reduces the amount of sugar and butter compared to crumbs just made with flour.

Pork cooked with apple, balasmic vinegar and honey is good too.

Hoolahoophop · 30/09/2025 11:07

Hmm, thanks Bog, my Mum used to make an awesome crumble topping with oats, whole meal flower, brown sugar and a selection of finely chopped nuts. It was delish. Maybe a pear crumble in my life in the near future.

Fibrous · 08/10/2025 08:27

I've just looked at my weight graph for the last year. I was a lot fatter than usual when I started as I'd spent the last three years retraining on top of working and I eat when I'm stressed and busy, so had piled on the pounds. When I started exercising and eating again properly the weight fell off and I got to where I was before I started studying. However, I'm finding it really difficult to get any lower, I'm just oscillating around 9 stone, whereas before (in my thirties) if I was eating well and exercising I'd be around the 8 stone mark. It's interesting. I still have belly rolls and a lot of leg/bum going on so there is definitely room to get lower, but my body is very much resisting.

I'm not unhappy at this size, it's the top end of comfortable for me. But I was hoping to get to a mid ground for some room to manoeuvre, as my jeans etc are very tight (I only wore leggings when I piled the weight on as I refused to buy new ones).

I'm going to double down on the healthy eating between now and christmas and see how things look.

Still loitering in the 63s.
Currently feeding a cold and flushing it with copious amounts of lemon and ginger tea.
Not doing too badly on food choices, but activity levels have taken a hit with energy levels being low.

Hoolahoophop · 10/10/2025 09:52

I made some blood sugar diet brownies last night.

Dark chocolate, ground almonds, dates, coconut oil, pear, eggs and Brazil nuts.

Disappointing even if they are only 150cal a square. Individually i love all the ingredients, together, not the greatest.

On the plus side after my run this morning I weighted in at 54.1Kg. Which I am happy with. Another week before half term holiday and the weight piles back on again.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/10/2025 16:59

NSV: Today I've been wearing a skirt with fixed waistband that has generally been on the awkwardly snug side in recent years. I think there is some "body recomposition" going on.

ACuppaAlwaysHelps · 11/10/2025 11:22

Well done on the scale progress and the NSV, everyone.

I’ve been back up to 8st7 again for the last few days, after getting down to 8st5.5 a couple of weeks ago. There’s no obvious reason for the gain, so I’ll just keep going. I think I’m still aiming for 8 stone but I mainly want to lose some of my tummy fat. I’m hoping some body recomposition might start to happen soon.

How’s everyone else getting on?

I did too much, a run and a low calorie day, and had two days of dizzy feeling. Then ate too much to compensate.....its a rollercoaster ride.

Good news on the skirt Bogoff. Just keep at it Acupper. Its a seemingly endless battle isn't it?

Sichsehnen · 14/10/2025 08:37

Can I join you folks?
I'm 36 (very soon) , female.
I'm 1m68 and 58.5kg (5ft5.9- 9st3)
I'm much much happier at 54/55kg so I'd like to loose 3.5kg hopefully in time for the end of the year but I just don't know where to start...
