Petite support for losing a few pounds/getting to our 'happy' size

ACuppaAlwaysHelps · 06/10/2024 16:13

Hi all. Following on from the thread that @SprayPaint started yesterday, a few of us (@Waiting9 @Horriblehistoree @FaceofSpades) seemed keen to have a thread to support each other in reaching our weight loss/body shape/fitness/health goals.

All petites are welcome on this thread, but it seemed like it would be particularly helpful to have a corner of Mumsnet for those of us who are petite/small framed and officially a 'healthy weight' but know we feel/look better a few pounds lighter (which would still be within a healthy weight/not underweight).

Maybe we can share goals, progress, struggles, things that are working, etc.? It would also be lovely to hear from any petites who are at a 'happy weight' and what you are doing to be successful.

Someone (maybe @FaceofSpades?) posted some helpful thoughts on the thread yesterday.

Please share how you all think this thread could be helpful.

Feel free to share as much or little as you like. Height, current weight, goal weight or other body measurements, nutrition, calories, exercise, NSV, etc.

Oh no, we're all flagging! My eating has crept up slightly too and I need to rein it in, I'm 1kg up on last week! I do fluctuate through the month though so I'm hoping it will naturally go back down again. The key really seems to be alcohol, I had wine on Sunday night and ate loads on Monday, which has set the tone for my week. I need to up my exercise again too.

Hibernatingtilspring · 05/02/2025 09:22

After jumping back up to 60.9kg last week (thanks hormones!) I'm down to 59.9kg today. Still tiny numbers and I still doubt sometimes whether what I'm doing is actually making a difference, but adding my numbers to a graph (Libra app) is really helping me keep the fluctuations in perspective.

If it's helpful to anyone else, I've found the key for me is the batch cooking which allows me to have a low calorie but filling meal several times during the work week. Definitely helps keep my overall intake down, especially if I've gone a bit off track during the working day stress!

Pickingmyselfup · 06/02/2025 07:53

Pretty sure I'm gaining weight! It's been a rubbish January for the diet, I've had 2 parties and a get together with friends where I've eaten and drunk too much and this weekend will be similar. Something I can't get out of either because it's a family event.

I'm running 4 days a week with a 10K race a week on Sunday and a half marathon coming up not to mention the rest so I'm pretty on it. I'm at the gym 3 days where possible but I had to skip all of last week due to an injury. Back on it this week and next week I'm booked into do yoga 3 nights with the intention of picking up at least one class long term, maybe with a second one short term moving to alternate weeks long term.

I can't fit any more exercise in and I can't cut my calories any further. I already walk a ton of miles every week!

I'm just stuck 😭

Hoolahoophop · 06/02/2025 09:33

Hey, 1kg down this week. Yay. I'm at 57.9kg now. So only another 8kg to go!

Then a LOT of body sculpting as my exercise has disappeared.

WombatChocolate · 06/02/2025 15:27

I’m doing okay. I was 9st 5 after Christmas and hit my first and main goal of 9st yesterday. I’d hoped to get there by the end of half term, so pretty pleased. I will be much more pleased when my weight starts with an 8 and not a 9 though.

Im 5ft 2 and in 50s and find it harder to shift weight now. Plus my scales are iffy…. Hey can vary by 2lb depending where on bathroom floor they are. Of course I’ve found the spot where I weigh less!

ideally would like to lose another 4 pounds and plan to keep trying to lose until Easter when I will then hope to maintain at whatever I get to. Anything under 9st seems good to me at this point in my life.

Vallan · 06/02/2025 21:17

I've been 'good' and cut out booze and snacks.

Will weigh tomorrow! Hoping for 8.10.

BogRollBOGOF · 07/02/2025 06:54

Still no bolier... still too cold to pose around with a tape measure and scales in my undies. Still eating for warmth.
Oh and I've got a bit of a cold. Not a bad one, but enough to want to eat for energy.

Between this and half term inc birthday, it's just try to keep up sensible habits as much as is viable and not worry too much about gaining momentum until March. At least at the end of March we hit BST... British Salad Time 😂

Hi all, please may I join? Im late 30s, 5ft 2. I started at 9st12 in June, got to 8st 9 in Dec and have backslid to about 8st12 now. My end goal is about 8st 4lbs which would be amazing to get to by summer but my will power is gone as its more like a bit of chub left over rather than pure disgust that i felt about myself at the start, but I know my face will look so much better if i get a proper jawline.

BeeMyBaby · 07/02/2025 08:24

Vallan · 07/02/2025 18:27

I know the feeling!

I'd crack open a cider but I want a good sleep and am up bright and early in the morning.

Yesterday was particularly shit on top of kids with penultimate-week-of-termitis, hormones and 10 days with no heating.

Eww no heating, no idea how you can diet through that, I go into emergency gain as much blubber as possible when I feel cold

Lowin2024 · 08/02/2025 07:00

I am just totally stuck 😭

I dropped from 9 stone 4 to 9 stone in the first 2 weeks and since then have been fluctuating between 9 stone and 9 stone 2 daily. Very hormone dependent (9 stone 2 on period; 9 stone after). I have been within 100grams of seeing 8 stone 13 and the next day at back to 9 stone 1!

I don’t actually know how to lose it at this point. I average 1300-1500 cals a day and burn over 2000 a day (apparently). I walk over 10k steps a day, do 3 gym workouts a week and have quit sugar. It feels like nothing I do will let me drop below 9. Feels like my body is just very happy here and will do whatever it can to keep me here! Any ideas ladies??

I'm not Grin
This is survival mode! I'm not being daft, and using it as an excuse to eat things I'll regret later, but this is not the moment to be reducing carbs. I find winter hard enough anyway.

I'd go for keeping protein and veg up and sticking to carbs in a more natural form (e.g. porridge oats) and reducing processed starchy carbs (e.g. pasta). Have a bit more of carbs on your workout days and lower portions on the general days.

(Admittedly I find this advice easier in the warmer half of the year when I can boost my plate with salad, and foods like tomatoes can ripen better)

Keep drinking water (again, not the easiest time of year) I'm keeping a large jug on the worktop so it goes up to room temperature, rather than the brain-freeze ground temperature straight from the tap.

Thank you! I will try that. Water definitely is an issue for me. I forget to drink quite frequently!

Would like to join in, 5ft 2 and 8 stone 13, but it's really about middle inches for me. I am about 2 inches over the recommended half your height waist ratio.

I need to give up smoking, but know I will pile the weight on. As it is, I have a bad relationship with sugar. Post-menopause and feeling it. Want to be 8 stone 5. It doesn't sound a lot to lose, but I am finding it so much harder to jack in the biscuits.

If it helps, I didn't put any weight on when I quit smoking! I found it easier to lose weight. Healthier body maybe?

That gives me hope. I read that you can gain 5 pounds just by giving up because your metabolism slows.

Jumping on to say the same here.

Initially I didn’t lose any weight but as the weeks passed and I started to feel mentally more in control, I really hit healthy eating to support my body in repairing itself. I didn’t concentrate on weight loss, that came later.

I’ve been following this thread since it started.
5ft 3 here and was always 8st 5lb but I’ve been on steroids for the last 3 years and gained a stone which literally has all gone on my stomach! I’m a regular with exercise, always have been; running, weights, cycling, so never had to think too much about calories so this has been so hard having to count calories and try to shift this extra stone.

It’s slowly coming off and I’m now 9st but I still have a wardrobe of clothes that are too tight around the waist and this weight loss malarkey is such slow progress!

Pickingmyselfup · 09/02/2025 10:06

I've given up with the insane calorie cutting, it's just not working. I've upped them again so I'm about 200 below maintenance and will see how things go. Will probably up them on long run and race days too so I probably won't be seeing much in the way of scale movement.

I'm hoping that I will see a difference in my fat loss through all of the exercise that I'm doing though. I'm starting yoga next week so I'll do that twice a week, running 4 times a week and gym 3 times a week too. It's all the perfect combination of cardio, strength training and stretching so it will be good for me either way. Really need to clean up my diet as I get closer to my first big race of the year too so maybe I'll just be a bit chunky but all glowy and healthy 🤔

Storynanny1 · 09/02/2025 11:15

I’ve lost 12lb now so hovering around the 9 st 1 or 2 lb mark. I’m going to carry on with calorie counting as it’s the only thing that works for me ie being mindful of portion size especially things like pasta , bread and rice etc. I’m going to try and get just below 9 as that’s where I feel comfortable, my clothes fit properly, and it’s a good weight for my height and age - 5’2” and 68.
It’s also good for my knees, but not so low that I look haggard with wrinkly skin!
Although a year 2 boy did say to me last week whilst on my volunteering day at my local infants, “ why do you look so OLD?”

Storynanny1 · 09/02/2025 11:16

Whereas the girls say “ I like your red lipstick Mrs storynanny1”

Don't worry, I am 50 and a child in reception where I work said similar. All because I have greying hair which I don't dye!
