January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted for a few days. I had a steroid injection in my spine on Thursday to try and help rid me of my sciatica pain. I haven't noticed any effect from that yet but I think my ongoing treadmilling and physio exercises are continuing to help. I managed to stay on plan for most of the week but had a bit of a relapse yesterday, due to splurging on snacks and a glass of wine whilst on a night out to see a show with my DD. We had a lovely time and I am back 'on it' today, batch cooking a sweet potato and kale curry to stock up the freezer with. I've also got a chickpea stew planned and will be attempting lentil pancakes at some point. I tried a pizza omelette today for lunch which worked pretty well.

@afaloren sorry to hear about your hamster 😔

@PatienceOfEngels sounds like a lovely time with your DC. I've been having fun doing jigsaws with my youngest today, we did a lego set a few days ago but I was only allowed to sit and watch her, and occasionally turn the page, as she wanted to do it all herself!

@ImALittlePea @ThreeRingCircus
I will look up Fool me Once and Traitors, I need something new to watch on my treadmill now I've finished The Crown

@HighlandCowRose Your guinea pigs are very cute 😍 I tried to get a photo my mine but they kept taking it in turns being inside their house for the photo!

ThreeRingCircus · 14/01/2024 16:48

I went to the gym first thing this morning - 30 mins on the treadmill and then 20 mins of weights. I was starving after that so came home and made brunch for the family of bacon flatbreads with hash browns. Not very healthy but they were very nice!

After brunch we took DDs for a ride on their bikes so got some more exercise running after DD2 who is 4 and still very wobbly on her bike.

Dinner is roast chicken. Normally I'd have been having some wine alongside it but I'm sticking to the kombucha instead.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/01/2024 16:54

@TheRealHousewife I agree about Fool Me Once. I didn't like Michelle as Maya at all but overall there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested!

@EndlessGuineaPigCycle I LOVE Traitors. I find it really fascinating how different people play the game.

afaloren · 14/01/2024 17:02

@WeirdPookah It is such a trigger for me! I had a massive problem with secret eating for years, thinking if nobody saw me then it hadn’t really happened. After the bypass (and some therapy) I swore I wouldn’t do it anymore and I haven’t really, I always tell DH what I’ve eaten, but not eating it in the first place is a step forward!

HighlandCowRose · 14/01/2024 17:31

WeirdPookah sorry about your hamster

EndlessGuineaPigCycle I find bribery works well, any food and they come as quickly as their little legs will carry them 😁

Fool me once is on my list to watch, like to binge programmes so finishing other things first, I love traitors, can't get dh into it.

L poached eggs on toast with fake smoked salmon
D the other ½ of yesterday's pizza and salad
S glass of wine, probably some crisp and yogurt with a sprinkle of granola.
E resistance band workout

I've been really pleased that I've stuck to 1 glass of wine a day, I've had calories available to have more but have stuck with my pledge to stick to 1.

afaloren · 14/01/2024 20:11

DH is home so I officially survived the weekend along without falling off the diet or booze wagon. Hurrah!

B - Protein yoghurt, banana
L - Chicken sausages with salad
D - Roast beef with broccoli and green beans, protein yoghurt, mini chocolate bar

Snack: 3 babybel lights

Exercise: 2 x dog walks, yoga.

I put weight back on because (due to numerous factors) I stopped eating the way my bariatric dietician advised and this past year I thought maybe my stomach had stretched because I could eat more in volume. But now I’m eating properly again, protein and fruit/veg, and not easily dissolved shit like crisps and chocolate I’ve discovered my restriction is just as strong as ever! So my tool is still working. It’s up to me to use it properly.

maybein2022 · 14/01/2024 20:15

Hi all,

Also LOVE The Traitors! So good.

Tonight marks two weeks 100% on track. I am so, so pleased and feel so much better.

NO Diet Coke or similar (amazing for me as I was a MASSIVE addict)
Minimal UPF
No crisps, biscuits, chocolate bars etc, I HAVE had a couple of homemade brownies and muffins over the two weeks and felt no need to binge on them which again is huge for me.

Hopefully weigh in tomorrow will be good.

Good luck to all with your week.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 15/01/2024 06:11

SW - 1st Jan - 225 lb
WC 8th Jan - 220 lb
WC 15th Jan - 217 lb

Total Loss - 8 lb

ThreeRingCircus · 15/01/2024 07:37

Morning all, just popping on to add my plan for the day. I went off plan at the weekend and am annoyed with myself so getting straight back onto it today.

B - coffee and a banana
L - spicy parsnip soup
D - jacket potato, cottage cheese, spring onions and side salad
E - another gym workout plus a walk there and back (3 miles total)

Kazziek · 15/01/2024 08:42

Morning!
I've finished all the xmas cheese so now I'm back in! God only knows how much I've put on since my last monthly check in in November. Back on track from today though. Onwards and upwards 😁

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 15/01/2024 08:48

Monday weigh day. I’m gutted.

SW (1 Jan) 11 stone
Weight last Monday 10st 10
CW today 11 stone
Total loss 0 lbs
Height 5”7
Age 41
Waist 29.5 inches
Hips (widest) 40 inches

Absolutely gutted. Stuck to all my food rules (NO alcohol, NO soft drinks, NO sweets, cake, choc, cooking healthy food from scratch, cutting out ultra processed food etc) rigidly.

Since 2 Jan (so in 14 days) done the following exercise:

  • minimum 10k steps per day
  • 7x tough 1 hour Pilates sessions
  • 3x 1 hour weights sessions
  • 4x 5k hill runs
  • 2x 2 hour hilly hikes

Actually can’t believe I’m not showing a loss as I have tried so so so hard and can’t really try and harder.

Really hoping it’s what someone said up thread about water retention after starting a new exercise regime.

This week my tactics are try and drink more water as I am not great at that.

I'm trying to remind myself that this will be beneficial to my overall health, even if the numbers on the scales aren’t changing.

I’ve also taken waist and hip measurements today so will track those as well as weight.

MrsPepperpotty · 15/01/2024 08:49

Oh @Whatsgoingonwithmyhead that's so disappointing. Hang in there - carry on as you are and I am sure you will see results soon.

Just a couple of days ago you were showing a 5lb gain and now your at 0lb gain, it's water retention and your body trying to figure out the reduced calories and massively increased exercise.

Give yourself a chance, make sure you're drinking plenty of clear fluids and have rest days to give your muscles time to heal.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 15/01/2024 08:56

Thanks both.
@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain the 5lb gain was from the low of 10stone10 last Monday. Really hope you’re right though.

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2024 09:57

Morning all. I'm gaining here too and just can't get a handle on things. I can feel the fluid retention so this week I'm really focusing on getting back to yogurt for lunch instead of cheese on toast, soup and my usual
2 soup rolls for dinner and not much in between. I've forgone my usual tunnocks with my second cup of tea this morning so that's a start. Solidarity to @Whatsgoingonwithmyhead

It's 3 weeks until our holiday and I want to keep focused. My walking is great and plentiful but my diet is rubbish except for breakfast. I know I can do this so I'm going to check in daily and log everything on mfp to keep on track. I'm going to get the ab roller out of the loft and do some weights too.

Hope you are feeling better @TheRealHousewife

Anyone got snow?

LemonDrizzle23 · 15/01/2024 10:08

@Whatsgoingonwithmyhead that's disappointing. The scales can be traitors at times! I hope it vanishes as quickly as it came.

New week - I'm setting my intentions and a new challenge, after what turn out to be a rather food heavy weekend 😬

I saw a Diabetes UK challenge, which was to swim 22 miles (35km) in 12 weeks. It equates to about 3km a week. We go on holiday in 10 weeks, so my new challenge is 3km a week (3 x 1km sessions) til then! First one today and will be my first swim since Dec.

What are everyone's else's intentions for the week?

LemonDrizzle23 · 15/01/2024 10:09

No snow here heat @LegoTherapy but it was about -5C on the school run this morning!

afaloren · 15/01/2024 10:17

Ah @Whatsgoingonwithmyhead that’s so disappointing, I’m so sorry. Try not to be discouraged. With all that exercise it’s certainly your body hanging on to everything so you have the energy. Make sure you’re drinking enough water.

We have a light dusting of snow, very pretty but not enough to interfere with the dog walk so that’s good.

WeirdPookah · 15/01/2024 10:31

Thank you for the condolences for our pet hamster.
She was quite a character for a hamster.

Pleased this morning to have got some big bags of frozen cauliflower in Lidl's XXL week, I make half/half with potato for mashed potato, nearly half the calories, and uses less butter as the cauliflower doesn't absorb it.

This week is meant to be so cold and wet. I think some indoor exercise might be on the cards, which I really don't enjoy as much.

@afaloren I have tried to plan something I will enjoy for lunch my husband won't so I have something to look forward too. He's also away for a whole weekend coming up, my girls often expect to be taken out for fish and chips if that happens!

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2024 10:38

@WeirdPookah Flowers oh no, I'm sorry to hear about your hamster. I cried for a week when DD's hamster died. I didn't realise quite how attached I'd become to his cute little fluffiness. I had some of his ashes put into a little glass pebble for Dd carry around with her to keep him close. Pets are such a big part of the family no matter how small they are 🥰

I'm going to watch some tv but am getting my gym ball out to bounce whilst I watch.

ImALittlePea · 15/01/2024 11:28

Morning ☺️

Love seeing how many are into the Traitors. It's seriously compelling watching, DH and I both love it. I'm enjoying Fool Me Once but not as much. Didn't get a chance to watch Gladiators in the end but we loved the Masked Singer!

Weekend reflections... Saturday wasn't terrible, had 5 slices of vegetable pizza, small portion of chips and a side salad for dinner. I did have wine, but again not as much as I normally would. Sunday wasn't great though 😬 we were out over lunch and kids needed feeding so we ended up in McDonald's. I wasn't going to have anything but ended up with a single cheeseburger and small fries. We had lasagne and chunky chips for dinner, I was busy with a job application and Sunday afternoon chores so it was shop bought. Didn't check the calories 🤦‍♀️ I had a nice big side salad with it though. I did also have two glasses of fizz when I sent the application in.

New week, back to it! I did a dance class this morning and have only had a banana and water since. I have soup in the fridge for lunch but currently with DS at an appointment so not sure I'll be home in time. I haven't planned dinner yet, that will depend on what I end up having for lunch.

There's a lot of things going on at the moment - my main intention for the week is to not allow the mental/financial/physical load of these things to derail me. I want to stay in the 9s this week 🤞

HighlandCowRose · 15/01/2024 12:12

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead agree with the others, the fluctuations you're seeing can't be weight, you're working really hard, it'll have to drop at some point.

LegoTherapy can I ask how you can feel the fluid retention? Alot of you are so much more in tune with your bodies than I am.
We've had snow, it settled but the suns come out so hopefully won't stick around for too long.

ThreeRingCircus do you have a receipe for the spicy parsnip soup? Sounds lovely.

SW 15st 4.6lb
CW 14st 13.2lb
This week loss 2.6 lb
Total loss 5.4 lb

Happy with that, first goal was to get in to the 14 stone bracket, next goal is the next ½ stone.

Got a butternut squash dahl in the slow cooker for dinner, it's smelling lovely but is making me feel hungry.

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2024 12:19

You can do it @ImALittlePea !

I'm determined to up my water this week. It's easy in the summer but at this time of year it's not and my twitchy bladder doesn't like a drink in the 2 hours before I do the school run. I take painkillers 4 times a day and I figure if I drink a full glass of water with them instead of a quarter of a glass then I'll be up to a litre just with medication. 2/3 cups of tea in addition to that plus the water content of soup and yogurt and porridge should give me a good fluid intake for the day. To me it seems like an easy change to make. Anyone else want to share their easy to make changes?

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2024 12:21

@HighlandCowRose I can feel my thighs are heavier when I walk and my jeans tighter. Send the snow this way please!

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2024 12:22

@HighlandCowRose sorry, missed it begure but please would you share the butternut squash Dahl recipe? It sounds great and might be something us fuss-pots can all eat.
