Hello & Welcome

October has flown by and now November is upon us! The outside temperature is actually warmer than this time last month, so feels quite unseasonal. Still have bumble bees and lady birds in the garden 😮. I for one do look forward to cosy nights by the fire and prepping for the coming festive season.

With just 59 days until Christmas there's still time to svelte up for the Christmas holidays. A part of my Christmas prep includes dropping a few extra lbs ‘to make room’ for a little foody extravagance… and a Baileys or two 😬

Carrying on from October’s thread, this is a space for those of us who enjoy healthy eating, exercising and feeling motivated to reach (or maintain) a healthy weight/bmi. The members of these threads are inspirational, supportive and happy to share their progress (the ups and the downs).

We all know that if we eat right, get outside & move more your mental health will reap the rewards. Better mental health = better choices. It becomes a healthy cycle.

There are so many enjoyable lifestyle options out there without the need to resort to extreme measures. Whatever way you choose, it needs to be enjoyable & sustainable for the long term. This is a long term commitment rather than a quick fix. Personally, I rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I try to not overload on carbs etc, include a protein source with most meals and aim to glug enough water. I exercise by doing walking vids & strength sessions with light weighs.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. Nonetheless this thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding. We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. I’ve weighed daily at times and weekly at other times. Do what works for you. The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

There is no shaming, competition or harsh words to be found on these threads. We are in this together.

Jump right in! If you’re not too shy, post a bit about yourself 😊. How do you plan to do it? What do you want to achieve? What excites you about your future self? Together, we can create a whole new you!

You’ll be glad you got on board this time next month 😊

@jellyrolly don't go it alone, come and moan at us!! Emotional baggage weighs us down far more than we realise and having a moan about it can do you the world of good and also make you feel less alone and in turn, less likely to seek comfort in the food cupboard!!

I didn't get up to swim this morning, I felt tired as I haven't been sleeping well so I thought sod it and switched off my alarm. I will go bootcamp tomorrow morning though even though its freezing! I long for a good night's sleep where I can just go to bed, get comfy and sleep til morning, no getting up for a wee then not being able to sleep again, no just laying awake with brain overload thinking about something that happened back in 1994 that is really not important!! Blurgh!!

I did buy some melatonin to help me sleep but I took it once and laid awake all night worried I'd sleep too deeply and not hear the kids if they needed me even my dp is laying right there next me and happily gets up for kids if need be. I brought it because I read a post on MN in which some lady started taking it and the weight just fell off. Yet I don't feel brave enough to actually take it! Silly, eh?

buzzofthebumblebee · 25/11/2021 10:38

Well said You. It is so good to share & realise you're not alone. Sorry you aren't feeling great, and had such a bad Dr @jellyrolly . Don't give up. Do try and get appt with another. Hormones have SO much to answer for. Lack of sleep too!

Are you taking anything for the menopause Jelly ? I finally made headway when a v sympathetic GP listened to my symptoms (in-between my tears - I was a blubbering mess) & despite being on merina that was supposed to be the wonder thing (it was for a bit) prescribed me Oestrogen Gel on top. I realise everyone are different.

Frustrating to not sleep isn't it You? I haven't tried melatonin. How & why do we take on board all these worries, as if we don't have enough already? Hope you can take some time "off" today - even to sit with a cuppa.

Big hello to everyone else!

jellyrolly · 25/11/2021 10:53

Thank you lovelies. I'm not really a natural sharer, even anonymously on the internet!

I will go back and have another GP refer me, it's very predictable and annoying to have a prejudiced and arrogant doctor.

I can't take hrt for medical reasons but I do want to be properly assessed and have all my hormone and vitamin levels checked. Its a bit overwhelming but hopefully it will get easier. I find it disheartening that I can no longer manage with a healthy lifestyle though.

Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 11:18

I think I've had my time off so far today by bumming about for 2 hours on MN 🤣🤣

I need to crack on with my chores now, the place is a mess after DD being a delightful little brat the past couple of days!! She's at nursery today so operation restore order is about to start.... soon!!

Happy Thursday 🌞

Crazzzycat · 25/11/2021 11:55

Sorry to hear things are hard for you at the moment @jellyrolly. Fingers crossed you manage to get the support you need.

That’s so frustrating about your new scales @MistySkiesAfterRain. It’s the last thing you need when trying to stay motivated.

@Youdoyoutoday, I think those scales estimate fat percentage by sending a small electric current through your body. The estimate is based on how much resistance the current gets, with some types of tissue (e.g. fat) being more conductive than others.

I think the general consensus is that the percentage you see on the scales isn’t necessarily that accurate, but any drop or increase over time should be accurate. It’s been a while since I’ve looked into this though, so things may be a little more accurate now.

Also, on the issue of sleep, I can recommend CBD oil, which is available from lots of places these days. I get mine from Holland & Barrett’s

Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 13:03

Then those scales do not sound good for me, I'll stick to just being annoyed at lbs for now!
Though whenever I've watched one of those weight loss programmes and they do the body scan, I've always been interested in that but then I guess ignorance is bliss in my case 🤣

buzzofthebumblebee · 25/11/2021 13:22

special big bunch of gorgeous Flowers jelly. Thinking of you.

buzzofthebumblebee · 25/11/2021 21:48

have i killed the thread? Wink

DownUdderer · 26/11/2021 02:13

I cooked the most delicious beef stew yesterday. Yum. I didn't have any potatoes though. But it was really tasty. My cooking can be hit and miss!

SunshineCake1 · 26/11/2021 07:34

Sounds delicious @DownUdderer. Just what is needed on a cold day. I E got three layers on to go running and have got back into bed. Was supposed to be doing the school run but at 6.40 could barely move and felt sick so dh just got up as normal. I'll go for a run then walk the dog then need to get some shopping.

My scales tell me water and fat content and I never took any notice as didn't understand due to not reading the information booklet and now I want to know it won't tell me!

TheRealHousewife · 26/11/2021 08:56

Good Morning Everyone

Was a little bit under the weather yesterday but feel somewhat ok today.

Some great losses happening ladies, well done 👍⭐️🥇👏. I know how hard it can be to be consistent in our habits and quite a few of you seem to have found your groove (and right head space) to make week on week progress. That is awesome!

@jellyrolly A warm welcome back. You can post/share anything you are comfortable with. Their response sucks! Hormones are pesky things that can cause turmoil at times of transition (adolescence, pregnancy, menopause). A big hug & Flowers

@Youdoyoutoday I’ve never tired melatonin (didn’t think you could get it in uk) but I find magnesium supplements or spray are great to aid relaxation and restful sleep (sound like an advert 😬)

Menu
Meal 1 - Cauli, broccoli, carrot, quinoa stir fry. Small salmon fillet.
Meal 2 - Chicken tray bake.
Tea, coffee, water.

OAN - BLACKFRIDAY < 30% off Code. If any of you like to take vitamins I recommend BetterYou spray vitamins. I’ve used them a couple of years and my vit d and b vits are at more than optimal levels. (Blood test investigations)

Have a great day!

I ordered it from Piping Rock, put my address in and they delivered it. Only since I've heard it's not for sale in the UK so thats probably another reason I've shied away from it.

Bootcamp done this morning and it was a little drizzly but OK, it's pouring now so I'm very pleased I've done it already, the weather is certainly turning. Shattered again though as I had another restless night.

jellyrolly · 26/11/2021 10:22

Good morning everyone. Thank you @TheRealHousewife I feel much better today.

Did a 5k run and braved the scales. I find the menopause weight gain alarming as I've never really gone over 10 stone in my life even when I was pregnant. Last week I appeared to have gained 6lb in 10 days which was worrying as I exercise daily and eat well. Today 5lb of those were gone, that's 6 days later so no idea what happened then. Maybe an error in the reading. Anyway, feeling better in general.

Crazzzycat · 26/11/2021 11:19

I’m in awe of anyone who got out in this weather @Youdoyoutoday! Or may be we got the bad weather earlier. I woke up at an ungodly hour because the wind was howling around the house and sleet was hitting the windows. I’m feeling a little bleary eyed as a result 😣

On the topic of Black Friday sales, if anyone is interested in ridiculously expensive exercise gear, Sweaty Betty are having 25% off at the moment. I have one of their running tops, which I must have washed over 100 times now. It still looks brand new, so I treated myself to another one, just so that I don’t have to put a wash on every time I do some exercise. I’m hoping that will spur me on to get back into a more regular exercise routine. I’ve become a bit too relaxed about that lately!

buzzofthebumblebee · 26/11/2021 11:38

Great effort on bootcamp and runs ladies! Keep up good work everyone on the food front. Yes, weird that scales can be all over the place. Glad you are feeling a bit brighter today jelly and you too thereal.

I'm away tomorrow visiting extended family. Food & alcohol will play a big part, but it will be emotional too, so I will go with the flow. Not a weekend to worry about calories. I'll be too busy trying to hold it together !!

Youdoyoutoday · 26/11/2021 12:10

@Crazzzycat it wasn't as bad as I was expecting this morning, i thought it was going to be all frosty but it was OK, slight drizzle I can deal with not what you're describing! I would have wimped out!

TheRealHousewife · 26/11/2021 13:40

@buzzofthebumblebee. I hope you’re ok during what you’re describing as an emotional family visit Flowers

Thanks for the sweaty Betty heads up. A couple of years ago I bought a hoody & joggers. They have been washed loads and still look like new.

Pleased to read you’re feeling much better @jellyrolly!

@Youdoyoutoday you’re doing great being able to exercise whilst still knackered. Impressive! 👍⭐️🥇

Well I've paid upfront!! Might be a different story if was pay as you go 🤣🤣

Youdoyoutoday · 27/11/2021 09:12

Morning all,

Good news for me this morning, I had a good night's sleep, helped by a glass of wine or 4, bit naughty but I do feel more refreshed for it.

I also stepped on the scales and I've dropped down to 13.12!! I've finally broken the plateau and the stone barrier which is such a relief after all these weeks of nothing happening. Sounds strange, but I could feel it this morning when I woke up, my stomach felt different, more sunken when I was lying on my back so out of interest, I thought I'd weigh myself. I was prepared, thinking it would be the same 14.2 I've been seeing since mid October so was very happy to see 13.12.

SW 16.10
CW 13.12
2 stone 12lbs down

Finally some movement after all these bootcamps and swimming!!

MyAnacondaMight · 27/11/2021 10:09

Well done to everyone getting out and exercising in this cold weather! And to @Youdoyoutoday for your stone breakthrough!

Week 3 weigh-in today for me - also a stone breakthrough:
SW: 11st 8lbs
CW: 10st 13lbs
TW: 10st 0lbs

So another 2lbs - 9 down and 13 to go - and reached one of my mini goals:

  • 10st something by December
  • 10st 11 by Christmas
  • Run 5km by 1 Jan.

This coming week on C25K I have to run 20 minutes! That’s going to be harder than any calorie deficit.

Youdoyoutoday · 27/11/2021 12:14

Well done @MyAnacondaMight 👏 ✔

SunshineCake1 · 27/11/2021 13:49

Well done @Youdoyoutoday. It is such a boost when the next stone down appears. Really pleased for you.

Great news @MyAnacondaMight on your stone breakthrough. Don't stress about the twenty minute run. I did 5km and half the time I had no clue what was coming and when I did realise there was no time to panic. You can do it.

I was so excited this morning to see ❄️ outside but it turned out to not be very much and it has all gone already except for the pile I swept off the car. Nice long walk with my dog and now I'm in for the day unless we have another dog walk. Run tomorrow.

Graphista · 27/11/2021 15:19

Quick post just to let you know I'm still here. Had a bad week Mh wise and basically mentally completely hibernated. Went way off plan too and yet only gained 1-2lbs? I'm annoyed but not worried.

I get like this at this time of year really struggle with the cold dark days - any tips on this gratefully received as I am clearly really struggling!

Mostly slept this week just felt off

murmuration · 27/11/2021 18:25

Today I celebrated US thanksgiving (as not possible to do it during the working week). I haven’t totted up the calories yet, but was planning to go over. Will eat sensibly tomorrow and see what happens.

I’ve just heard my secondment is taking us all out to a Christmas lunch at a local up-scale restaurant, three courses. This will be a test to see if I can enjoy that as a one-off - I hope so, as I might still anyway :)

@Graphista have you looked into light therapy? I’ve got an LED blue light that I use every morning once my wake time is before the sunrise. DH uses it too, in the middle of the day. He’s got quite severe seasonal affective disorder, and the light helps him with his mood. Just 20 min a day is supposed to make a difference. For me, it just helps me to wake up at the right time.

Congrats @Youdoyoutoday ! I’m really impressed by you perseverance.

@MyAnacondaMight and congrats to you for making your milestones!

I’ve been thinking about plateaus. One thing I noticed as I gained weight so quickly over lockdown is that I stalled on the way UP at the exactly the same weights as I found myself struggling to get below. I wonder if they are some kind of natural set points that my body is happy to stay at. They happen approximately every two stone (a bit more). It’s making me wonder about my goal weight, which is in between one of these points and the weight I’d been until I started gaining (due to medication) in my late 20s. I always assumed it was folly to try to reach that ‘young’ weight again. But now I’m wondering if I might actually have set points every 2-stone+ and I should be aiming for 8 stone 6 instead of 9 stone 4? It would still leave me in a healthy BMI, just middle rather than upper edge. I guess it’s not something I have to worry about for quite a while yet!
