Contemplating bariatric surgery.... advice?

Hi as the title states I am contemplating a gastric sleeve. I am a serial yo yo dieter and my metabolism is fucked. I have pcos and have tried Xenical, saxenda etc- successful until I stop using and the weight piles back on.

I’ve seen an endocrinologist and he said that, in his opinion, sometimes surgery is the only viable option. I’d be paying for it myself as I don’t quite meet the nhs criteria yet.

I’m miserable- I don’t lose weight unless I starve myself ie 600 calories a day and then I’m even more unhappy. I’m worried about my health in the long term, but then the prospect of surgery scares me too.

Any advice from those who have been there before?

Mine is way cheaper than that too @LaurieFairyCake that’s eye wateringly expensive. I’ll pm you my clinic

@LaurieFairyCake

Oh god I assumed that was standard price for England Shock

Could you PM me Monkey with the name of your hospital/surgeon if you feel able to?

Done ✅
needtoloselots · 20/07/2020 22:34

@LaurieFairyCake
My surgery is also significantly cheaper than yours, no mention of an endoscopy either.

Hiddenmnetter · 21/07/2020 11:13

I didn't have an endoscopy and mine was £8,500 all in including on going yearly followup. £16,500 is very expensive. Mine would have been £1,000 more because I had sleep apnoea before I had the surgery, but he said he also did surgery at another hospital that didn't insist on the additional feature (I can't remember what it was now, was just glad to save £1,000) for people with sleep apnoea.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/07/2020 15:28

Thank you Monkey and Needtolose Smile

So far I've contacted Tonic and they're not taking bookings until October

And I've emailed ew too and waiting for them to get back to me.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/07/2020 15:29

Hiddenmnetter · 22/07/2020 05:10

@LaurieFairyCake sure

Burpalot · 22/07/2020 06:27

£16k! Sounds like they're making up for lost bookings. £10k here all in

Sofasogood1 · 22/07/2020 06:35

I had it done a year ago. BMI was 47 now 27. I am so happy. No food or drink is off limits to me. I can exercise and enjoy it. I am indulging my love of fashion. I feel healthy and I've given up the cigarettes too. Still love a drink though... Currently maintaining my weight and would be happy to stick where I am. Take the vitamins, drink the water!

LaurieFairyCake · 22/07/2020 12:06

How many calories do you eat a day Sofa? Are you satisfied on that?

I have now contacted everyone recommended Smile - thank you all so much

Sofasogood1 · 22/07/2020 12:34

Ooh good question. It varies tbh. I probably ate about 900 in my main meals yesterday? If that. But it can be more or less.

So yesterday I ate:
I had 0% total Greek yogurt with frozen fruit topper and a sprinkling of granola (for crunch) for breakfast.

Leftover roast pork slice and tiny chipolata with a salad made from celery and herbs for lunch. (Meat from doggy bag from roast dinner at the pub on Sunday. Done me three meals!)

Dinner was half an individual Charlie Bingham fish pie with a couple of spoons of veg.

Plus a cup of tea, and a sugary milky coffee. Lots of water.

I also had a fair bit of wine ooops and a small piece of toast with peanut butter and a slice of cheese before bed. If I hadn't have had the wine I wouldn't have snacked.

Total it's avocado on toast with slice of veggie bacon. Lunch I'll have leftover fish pie and veg from last night. Not sure about dinner yet...

I often just have two meals at the weekend - brunch and dinner. But workdays I usually have 3.

I rarely snack but try and have something high protein if I'm desperate - typically a peanut protein snack or bit of cheese or cracker with cheese.

I prioritise protein and eat lots of yogurt, eggs, fish etc.

Sofasogood1 · 22/07/2020 12:34

I put paragraphs in that I promise!

Sofasogood1 · 22/07/2020 12:41

Sorry before anyone catches me out I should have said 'I rarely snack if I've not been on the sauce'.

But how you eat will change in stages. First you'll have liquids, then puree, then soft... It's very exciting!

LaurieFairyCake · 22/07/2020 14:47

Thanks for all that info about your meals SmileMy biggest struggle is hunger. I only eat 2 meals now and try so hard to stick to 1500 calories. Any less than that and all I can think about is food.

Well had my Covid test today- am terrified that it’s going to be positive. No symptoms but just a gut feeling that it will be Sad

Test itself wasn’t so bad but I’m convinced my op will get postponed again

Coronacurls · 24/07/2020 09:34

I'm really seriously thinking about having a sleeve gastrectomy done this year - it has been so interesting and informative reading everyone's experiences, so thank you for posting.

Has anyone had surgery, or is planning surgery in the Bath/Bristol area, and if so is there a surgeon you would recommend?

Good luck everyone having their ops soon.

MonkeysandParrots · 24/07/2020 11:50

@Seriouslyconfused3 Yay! Great news, Monday will be here in a flash, am excited for you too 😂

@Coronacurls I’m in Bristol, surgery a week today at The Nuffield in Clifton Village. I’ll pm you my surgeons details, I’m also having a sleeve.

luckylady22 · 25/07/2020 13:55
