Vegan dieters support thread?

Hello!

Is anyone out there trying to lose weight while also being / trying to be vegan / plant based?

I am and would love some company! I have very recently gone vegan, but am wary of gaining weight. I actually really need to lose some, so I'm attempting both things at once.

I am doing Weight Watchers, but any approach, (but obviously vegan food), would be very welcome to join me.

Fatkins hopefully you'll get a pleasant surprise when you weigh in.

Some icing did fall into my face I'm afraid. For testing purposes. Grin I am planning to eat a small piece of cake at the party but usually I am too busy running around getting things ready, to eat much more than that, so I think it will work out OK overall.

Crazzzycat · 21/07/2019 01:07

I didn’t have the best day either. I blame the Summer holidays. Only one day in and all my plans to eat healthily are already starting to crack! 😖

I’m going to be away tomorrow, which will no doubt be another challenge for the diet. I’ve promised myself to get back on track on Monday.

I hope everyone else is finding things a little easier than me!

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 21/07/2019 07:34

I had yesterday off - it was DS2's birthday. I have a small rule that your child's birthday cannot possibly be a dieting day Grin

Fatkins · 21/07/2019 07:57

It's a good rule contessa!

Crrrazy, no, not just you struggling to stick to...well, anything 😂!

Weighed in and I've only gained a quarter of a lb, so not bad at all, all things considered.

Fatkins that sounds great! That's not even a gain!
Had toast and marmite for breakfast, veg burger and salad for lunch and will have jacket potato with hummus and more salad later. A bit carby but nutritious and I'm going to force myself to go for a run tomorrow morning before standing on the scales with my hands over my eyes!
Would have gone for a run this morning but the cat came in for a snuggle and I didn't want to disturb him. (Excuses...)

Fatkins · 21/07/2019 15:43

Thanks loose. Fair enough with the cat. You definitely don't want to piss off your natural overlord 😂😂😂.

Today has been:

B: overnight oats, blueberries and a Banana
L: peanut butter and jam sandwich and a packet of s&v crisps... Not great
D: planning roast veg pasta with toasted pine nuts. Also not great, but it will be tasty!
Snacks: so far just tea, but I'm going to have some fruit in a minute too

I'm definitely doing slimfast this week. Just for a bit. I'm less than a stone from a healthy BMI. If I'm disciplined about it, I can definitely get back there soon I think.

Fatkins I see you understand the power dynamic in our household!
Roasted veg pasta sounds fab!

Fatkins · 21/07/2019 19:18

roast veg pasta has been postponed till tomorrow, as DH suggested Wagamamas tonight.

OP posts:
DamnItsSevenAM · 21/07/2019 23:05

Ooh Wagamamas! We're thinking of going there sometimes this week if we can fit it in. How was it Fatkins?

Contessa I wholly agree with your rule, hence the piece of delicious chocolate cake I ate today does not count at all.

Loose good luck with the run tomorrow, I hope you can sneak out before the cat forces you to snuggle again Grin

Today I had
B: fruit and seeds, soya milk
L: chickpea curry with a little rice and lots of steamed veg
chocolate cake
2 tangerines
D: big plate of raw veg and hummus, grilled mushrooms, 2 shroomdogs

I don't think the scales are going to be my friends tomorrow but hopefully over the week things will meander downwards again.

Fatkins · 22/07/2019 08:01

Morning all!

I'm slimfasting today 💪.

7am, Wagamamas was lovely. DH ordered all vegan (he is Omni) and we shared it all. My favourite thing was bang bang cauliflower. Least favourite was the katsu sauce, but I did like the seitan that came in it 😂. But all of it was good.

Fatkins · 22/07/2019 09:40

I've had my first shake of the day. It is surprisingly filling stuff. I added spinach and frozen berries to it.

I'm packing up a picnic for dcs and we're going to the park. Weather could be better, but I am undeterred.

I wish they made premixed bottles of vegan slimfast... I could make some and bring it in a bottle I guess, but I'm not sure I cba! I'll just have a coffee and some fruit and wait till later.

As expected, I had another not particularly great day yesterday. We went away and, while DH and kids had a great vegan lunch in Leon, I had a vegan magnum and biscuits 😳 I have a severe intolerance to onions so often end up eating weird things when away, but yesterday was worse than usual.

I’m kind of excited though that everyone voluntarily decided to go for the vegan options. I wouldn’t describe us as a vegan family yet as we’ve only been dabbling with it for a few weeks and we’re kind of in a “transition phase”. But that was confirmation to me that we’re all pretty much onboard with the idea of going more and more plant based!

Today’s plan is spicy bean wraps, carrots and salad for lunch and tomato and spinach risotto for dinner. Snacks will be soya yoghurt with nuts and rice cakes with banana and home made pumpkin seed butter.

It’s not the most balanced day, but does come in under calories. I guess there’s always vitamin pills for days like this 😂

LooseAtTheSeams · 22/07/2019 14:46

Too hot and too tired to run but I have walked to the supermarket and lugged loads of shopping back!
Breakfast was lentil cakes with peanut butter - yum! Lunch was baked potato with baked beans and dinner will be tofu/stir fry veg/ramen with v small amount of noodles for me!

DamnItsSevenAM · 22/07/2019 16:56

Brill to hear people's families getting on the vegan train! My dh is omni and out of 3 kids, 1 is omni, 1 vegetarian and 1 vegan. At home eat mostly vegan with added extras for non vegans.

Today I've had
B: Strawberry and banana smoothie with protein powder, flax seed and nut butter.
L: Linda Mac lincolnshire sausages with those giant beans in a tomato sauce (if you know what i mean?) and avocado.
D: will be a salad with chickpea "tuna" with mayo and sweetcorn. Needs something else adding, I might toast some pumpkin and sunflower seeds?

Snacks: so far tangerines, a few lentil crisps and a lemonade lolly. It was so hot!

Fatkins · 23/07/2019 12:50

Hi all!

Fair enough not running in this heat loose. My word it is hot here today!

I am the only vegan in this house, but we all eat mainly vegan at home and DH would normally eat vegan at work too.

Today has been:

B: two bits of toast with peanut butter and jam, but not a lot of either iyswim.
L: a brown bread sandwich with onion hummus and cherry tomatoes. Salt and vinegar crisps.
D: there's talk of lighting the BBQ here, so I'll have veggie burger, sweetcorn and salad. Even if we don't BBQ I might have that anyway, just cooked indoors! Otherwise, if it's too hot for that, I might make gaspacho, if I have the ingredients knocking around.
Snacks: fruit & maybe a booja booja truffle...

Not the best day, but tbh, it's too hot to get too worked up about diet!

Crazzzycat · 23/07/2019 18:13

I’ve had a good day so far. I came to the conclusion yesterday that trying to stick to 1400 kcal during the Summer holidays is just too hard. I get so frustrated by all the temptation around me and then I end up eating way too much 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s not a good way to be, so I’ve decided to stop aiming for rapid weightloss over the next six weeks and allow myself some more calories if I feel I need them.

It feels a bit radical after more than six months of following a strict diet, but if I don’t do this, I think I’ll end up eating my body weight in chocolate and crisps 😂

Having said all that, today has been pretty balanced. I had spicy bean wraps for lunch and lentil bolognese with greens for dinner. Snacks were a handful of nuts and a nectarine. I also did a two hour walk. Not bad, if I say so myself Smile

Fatkins · 23/07/2019 18:20

crazzzy, you're spot on imo. I think healthy eating is so much more important than rapid weight loss and sometimes being too restrictive can bring out my tendency to feast after the (perceived) famine!

Obviously, a lot of it depends on the person, but I definitely can't be too restrictive, or else I end up in a really bad cycle of bingeing and dieting.

OP posts:
ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 23/07/2019 18:35

I've found a lot of it is mental rather than physical, isn't it. I have made some really low cal soup for this evening and have spent the day expecting to be ravenous, so am now starving. I've eaten as much as I ever do, so it's not real!

Stupid brain Sad

Fatkins · 23/07/2019 19:04

Definitely contessa. It's all in the perception of deprivation for me. So, the more I think about dieting the hungrier I get! I suppose that's why mindful eating is a thing 🤔.

OP posts:
DamnItsSevenAM · 23/07/2019 21:10

Evening everyone... Crazzzy I'm wondering where you live that it was comfortable going for a 2 hour walk? Moving from the sofa to the kitchen pretty much left me in a melted heap.

I agree that eating in a way that's sustainable is more important than rapid weight loss. I like plenty of treats so I try to allow enough flexibility so I can have them. I'm sure I'd lose weight faster if I didn't, but I'd be miserable and probably end up giving up.

Today I've had
B: fruit, seeds and soya yogurt
L: chickpea 'tuna', avo, tomato and spinach salad
D: nut roast, gravy, steamed veg
Snacks: 2 satsumas, small piece of leftover birthday cake with a spoonful of Swedish glace ice cream. Probably an error as I was so inactive during the day but I hardly ever make cakes and it seemed a pity not to enjoy it!

Crazzzycat · 24/07/2019 10:21

Damn I live in Wales, very close to the sea. The temperature went up to about 24 degrees here yesterday, and even then there was still a bit of a breeze. So nothing like the temperatures in other parts of the U.K. just yet, but I think the forecast for the rest of this week is a lot hotter.

Contessa I totally agree. I’ve been surprised by how weightloss, and especially long term weightloss, is much more of a mental than a physical challenge. Dealing with the physical sensation of feeling hungry isn’t too bad. It’s all the other stuff that makes it bad.

I had a chat with DH yesterday about all the crap food he buys for the kids (the majority of which gets eaten by us 🙈). We’ve agreed to calm that down a bit, so hopefully there will be a little less temptation coming my way.

Fatkins · 24/07/2019 14:52

Ugh so hot again today! I think it was 34 degrees here yesterday and up to 37 expected tomorrow 😭😭😭.

I'll admit that I sat in the dcs' paddling pool a minute ago to cool off 😂😂😂.

Keep up the fluids lads!

Crazzzy, I love the coast round Wales. So stunning there! It's a built up hell hole where I live. Ok, slight exaggeration, but it is very built up.

Anywho, so far hasn't been great again, and I've gained another lb. Obviously, I know how! I might go crawling back to WW at this rate Blush.

I'll record my food for today though:

B: 2 x jus rol croissants, from a can with jam Blush
L: leftover chickpea, spinach and potato curry with a very small portion of rice
D: planning veggie burgers, sweetcorn and salad, (which I also planned to eat yesterday, but didn't, as I had all the stuff for curry and no burger buns)!

Snacks: actually, I've been fairly good on the snack front so far. Every cloud and all that! Just half a pear (the baby ate the other half) and half a peach (ditto), plus two teas with almond milk. One with sugar.

I haven't had any wine (or other alcohol) since last Friday. Hopefully that will help my waistline a bit. Empty calories etc.

Crazzzycat · 24/07/2019 15:57

Oh my goodness FatKins those temperatures sound hard going! I’m actually wearing a cardigan today, as it’s only 19 degrees here and cloudy 😬

I’m amazed you’re managing to eat anything in that kind of heat. I’m pretty heat-tolerant, but have absolutely no appetite whatsoever if the temperature goes over 25 degrees.

Fatkins · 24/07/2019 17:13

Sadly I can eat in all weathers 😂😂😂

Fatkins same here, melting! Dreading tomorrow as I'm supposed to be getting on a train to Brighton and all the advice seems to be don't!
First day of my holiday and diet is going adrift:
B toast with peanut butter, fruit and yoghurt.
L portion of pasta pesto with fennel and mushroom and avocado on side.
S vegan cornetto, 1 naked bar, some cashew nuts (see what I mean)
D falafel with roasted veg
1 alcohol free beer
