Vegan dieters support thread?

Fatkins · 05/07/2019 15:45

Hello!

Is anyone out there trying to lose weight while also being / trying to be vegan / plant based?

I am and would love some company! I have very recently gone vegan, but am wary of gaining weight. I actually really need to lose some, so I'm attempting both things at once.

I am doing Weight Watchers, but any approach, (but obviously vegan food), would be very welcome to join me.

Just weighed in and am somewhat astonished at the fact the numbers have gone down since last week! I'm 63.9kg, which is apparently 10 stone exactly. That's the lightest I have ever been as an adult!! Very excited Grin

Today's food plan:
B: porridge with sultanas and coconut milk 233 cal
L: cauliflower bake with pearl barley 317 cal
D: lentil and potato soup 301 cal
Soy milk for tea 150 cal
Doughnut nectarine for snack 40 cal
Plus sundries to get me up to 1300 cal total!

Crazzzycat · 18/07/2019 10:11

Thanks for those links SnakesAndStones. I’m planning to try my packet of tofu at the weekend, so this is very timely Smile

And congrats with that loss Contessa. That must feel great!

I have a particularly uninspiring day planned, as I’m going to have my beloved spicy bean wraps for both lunch and dinner. I’ll have different things with it, but essentially it’s the same meal.

I’m having my shopping delivered tonight, so more variety should soon be on its way 😁

Fatkins · 18/07/2019 12:26

That's brilliant contessa!!! Well done you!

Vix, for some reason the picture with your seitan bacon didn't show up on my phone when you posted it. I can see it now and it looks amazing! Do you have the recipe please?

Looks like everyone is doing really well!

I ended up having some carbs yesterday as part of my evening meal, but tbh, I can live with it and I think my calories are still ok for yesterday.

So far today, I've just had an apple, a tea and a coffee with oat milk. I don't feel especially hungry. I really think that eating fewer carbs has changed my greediness appetite for the better!

I went to a lovely yoga class yesterday evening too and I think twisting is getting a little easier as I've lost some weight.

I haven't weighed myself today and won't until Sunday, but my sister and DH have both commented that I am looking a bit less of a Fatkins Grin. Neither are the sort to say that if they didn't really mean it. Hurrah!

Well done Fatkins - unsolicited praise is the best kind Grin

Thanks for the congratulations - I must not get complacent though! I have been googling ways to make my stomach look less like a concertina today. That is an antidote to cheer, let me tell you.

Fatkins · 18/07/2019 14:28

Thanks vix and contessa Smile.

My dsis is staying with us and she and DH are planning a Chinese takeaway this evening. I actually think I'm going to sit it out and make my own version at home. I was googling "is hot and sour soup vegan?" just now and up popped "how hot and sour soup is made". It is NOT vegan and I nearly gagged when I read what was in it. That isn't just vegan squeamishness - I haven't even been vegan / plant based very long! But it's put me off ordering from there, especially when all I'm going to be likely to get is plain veg and boiled rice. I can make that myself!

Has anyone seen the Kevin Bridges bit in one is his stand up shows where he talks about "house rice". That will be me later "house rice" 😂😂😂.

So far today has been:

B: an apple, a tea and a coffee with oat milk
L: two big bowls of homemade vegetable soup
Snack just now: a nectarine and a small banana
Dinner: I'm planning to make potato wedges out of some jacket potatoes in my fridge and having them with hummus and cut up veggies

Early night tonight as we have an early start tomorrow.

I’m off to Amsterdam for the weekend tomorrow - so I’ll report back on the other side!! There’s plenty of vegan options but staying low carb could be tricky!!!

furrytoebean · 18/07/2019 22:30

I’ve had an apple for breakfast
Tofu noodle miso soup with spinach, mushroom and sweet corn for lunch,
Butternut squash curry, saag Aloo and quinoa for dinner
Snacks were a sweet potato brownie and some leftover tomato and cucumber salad, and about three cups of red bush tea with homemade cashew milk.

I’ve just hit my target weight so I’m more interested in maintaining so am going for around 1800 calories a day.

EatenByDinosaurs · 18/07/2019 23:22

contessa that's fantastic!! Well done!!

Thanks Fatkins, DH is Mexican-American which seems to make it OK for people to come out with all manner of crude and stupid stuff. Sigh. At least we live off base now.

I'm doing another fast day, still doing every other day fasting.
I did really enjoy my dinner last night, I boiled up a tin of mixed beans, added grilled diced tofu and red pepper, some baby spinach and kale leaves and fresh basil leaves. I mixed olive oil and passata into it and topped with vegan parmesan and it was great, and so quick and easy Smile. Wish I'd taken a photo now as it looked pretty.

I do eat quite a lot of beans and lentils, not very keto at all but I don't think I'd be able to keep my potassium intake up otherwise.

EatenByDinosaurs · 18/07/2019 23:24

Amsterdam sounds brilliant Vix! Have fun Grin

Huge well done on hitting your target furry, must be such a great feeling Grin

Crazzzycat · 19/07/2019 10:07

I had a reasonably good day yesterday, but did have a home made peanut butter flapjack, which pushed me over my calorie limit 😳

Nevertheless, when I got on the scales this morning they were showing the lowest number since I started! And I hit almost all of my vitamin and mineral targets, so it’s not all bad 💪

Today, I’m planning bean wraps for lunch and a tofu stir fry for dinner. Snacks will be some soya yoghurt with added seeds, almonds and a nectarine.

It will push me over calories, but since I made it into the healthy weight zone a couple of weeks ago, my main focus is on making sure my diet is healthy, not rapid weight fast. So I’m ok with that Smile

SnakesAndStones · 19/07/2019 14:37

Contessa how brilliant on the weigh in! I wondered if you had a recipe for the cauliflower and barley, please? Sounds like something we'd enjoy.

Crazzzycat let us know how you get on with the tofu. Well done also on your weigh in. Great to hear successes, it's very encouraging.

Fatkins sorry about the hot and sour soup. Sounds gross, I won't google as I am squeamish too but thanks for the warning.

Vix I hope you have a great trip!

I wanted to ask about bolding people's names... I just worked out how to do it so will start with my next post. Is it so it's easier for the person mentioned to spot their name? Or does it tag them or something so they get a notification?

Furrytoebean, I just wanted to say I love your name. Well done on the weight loss and I hope maintaining works out well for you.

Eatenbydinosaurs I am so sorry to hear people are idiots about making comments. I can't understand why anyone would think that's OK.

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 08:14

Hi all!

Just checking in from my night away at a graduation (not mine).

Snakes, you can bold people's names by putting an asterix either side of their name or you can tag them by putting an @ in front, like this @SnakesAndStones. Tagging notified them, but bolding doesn't.

Vix, I hope Amsterdam is wonderful! I've actually never been there, but would love to go.

Dinosaurs, ugh, people are dreadful. I'm American born btw, but have a fairly strong Irish accent... and live in England ConfusedGrin. I meant to say before, but keep forgetting.

Snakes, don't Google the soup 🤮.

Yesterday ended up being:

B: tofu scramble, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, a small sweetcorn fritter and toast
L: erm champagne... And a g&t Blush
D: out in a Turkish restaurant where they were extremely lovely and accommodating; lentil soup & bread followed by aubergine with peas (in place of meat) with rice and salad. A small beer (I know, I know Blush) and a Turkish coffee.

So, obviously not great, but it was a big celebration for us.

I have no idea what sort of vegan options they'll have for breakfast this morning. Will report back.

Considering a few days of vegan slimfasting from tomorrow, as a little boost to get me back on track!

OP posts:
Fatkins · 20/07/2019 10:22

I had walnuts, raisins and a flat peach, followed by sautéed potatoes, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms! Not the best, but could've been worse I suppose. It was delicious I have to say. Back on it with a vengeance tomorrow! Weigh in tomorrow too 😬.

LooseAtTheSeams · 20/07/2019 11:45

There were actual vegan options for lunch on the training I was doing at work this week!
Have stalled with weight loss but stress drove me to eat stuff I can normally resist and I'm just relieved I haven't put it back on. Had falafel and roast veg last night which was fab and planning couscous and salad for lunch.

SnakesAndStones · 20/07/2019 13:02

Thanks for e

SnakesAndStones · 20/07/2019 13:05

Sorry, fat fingers pressed post too soon! Thanks for explaining about the bolding Fatkins. So you'd tag if it was something really important, but otherwise just bold to make the thread clearer?

It's ridiculous, I've been on MN for years but we never used to have these newfangled wotsits Wink

That food sounds excellent at the Turkish place. Glad you enjoyed it.

LooseAtTheSeams that must have been a pleasant surprise to be fed properly!

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 13:47

The Turkish food was soooo nice. They added dried mint to the lentil soup and served it with a wedge of lemon. I'm definitely trying that next time I make it.

Yes, I would normally tag someone if I especially wanted them to read the post. I often use it if it's a really busy or fast moving thread too, as otherwise posts specifically to another poster, (maybe asking them for further explanation or something), don't get lost in the noise iyswim!

This dropped off my active, everyone seems to be doing really well.

I’ve had a rough so it’s not been the best for eating but I’ve managed to maintain. Hoping next week I’ll be down again.

Breakfast was a bagel, lunch tomato soup with Pom bears (!) in costa and dinner will be burritos and salad with guacamole.

LooseAtTheSeams · 20/07/2019 17:22

Snakesandstones yes - although it was the same food four days running! But I do appreciate the fact they were thinking of me!
I'm making a chickpea curry for tea. Slightly indulging myself with poppadums on the side, though...

Vix20678 · 20/07/2019 17:29

Amsterdam is lovely but I’ve not been able to avoid the carbs, so I’m going to have to get back ‘on it’ once I’m home!

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 17:35

vix, fair enough really! It's harder when you aren't cooking for yourself.

I'm also going to be reducing carbs again from tomorrow, as it did help me eat less crap I found last week. I couldn't do keto like you, but I definitely think lower carb, higher fat and protein is generally a good plan.

OP posts:
DamnItsSevenAM · 20/07/2019 18:02

I hope nobody minds, this is Snakes with a name change. Both names are from a Taylor Swift song but the old one sounded a bit hard and I'm actually quite a fluffy person, so I like this better.

I weighed again this morning and have lost another pound, so half a stone in total which I am very pleased about. I would honestly be happy if I lost just one more stone, but to get back to my old weight it would be a stone and a half. We'll see.

Today I had usual fruit and seeds for breakfast with soya milk, Sainsburys shroomdogs for lunch (I am obsessed with them) with a big pile of spinach and mushrooms, and dinner will be stir fry with tofu. I've also had a plate of raw veg and a yogurt with some berries but I am still feeling pretty hungry. I'm cooking a chocolate cake later for a party tomorrow so I'll need to watch I don't eat all the icing!

Fatkins · 20/07/2019 21:36

Hi damn aka snakes Grin!

Today has been such a write off. I blame travelling and slight hangover / tiredness after yesterday. On it tomorrow.

Hi again purple and loose too!

I am dreading weighing myself tomorrow. Expecting a bit of a gain 😬.

I've made overnight oats to have in the morning instead of slimfast, which iirc always leaves me ravenous. I may resort to it on Monday though. We shall see.
