Vegan dieters support thread?

Hello!

Is anyone out there trying to lose weight while also being / trying to be vegan / plant based?

I am and would love some company! I have very recently gone vegan, but am wary of gaining weight. I actually really need to lose some, so I'm attempting both things at once.

I am doing Weight Watchers, but any approach, (but obviously vegan food), would be very welcome to join me.

Yes, Sainsbury's mega wine labelling is definitely a mixed blessing!
Having a seitan bacon and mushroom roll for lunch and grilled tofu with rice, broccoli, spinach and some kind of dressing that DH makes for dinner. I do try to avoid too much processed stuff but tomorrow is burger night. However, I'll be eating mainly fruit and nuts during the day as it's staff training and the sandwiches are usually pretty awful!

Vix20678 · 14/07/2019 14:15

Lunch. Made some seitan bacon this morning and it’s delicious.

Yum vix!

I had lunch at a place called Ethos Cafe in Oxford Circus. It was fab and I found a few things which I think were low carb and definitely were vegan. I had marinated olives, guacamole and a delicious salad with tomatoes, avocado and onions. Vegan wine also. There were some amazing looking puddings, some of which I think were vegan, but I didn't dare look too closely, lest one fell into my face by accident 😂.

I have an avocado in my handbag for the train home if I get desperate, though it isn't exactly a long journey.

Hello all!

How is everyone doing?

I started today with a tea with oat milk and a smoothie bowl. I had an Americano with soya milk while out on a play date and I'm planning a salad with avocado and mixed nuts for lunch. Broccoli stir-fry, with nuts & cauliflower rice for dinner.

Lunch today was quite healthy - couple of mini humus and veg wraps, bit of salad and some fruit - plus orange juice. More than I was expecting to be able to eat from the training day!

Fellow vegan of 5 years here! My BMI is within the healthy weight range, but having just turned 40 I can feel I need to shift some weight. I'm 5ft6 and weigh around 67kg. I'd like to shift at least 5kg ideally. I'm a skint, single parent of 2, who puts herself at the bottom of the list and lives off of toast and marmite! I think I'll try IF and see how I get on. How many cities do people aim for on fast and non fast days?

Hello, would it be OK if I joined you please? I've been plant based for a year and have piled on a couple of stone which I'm now sick of and want to do something about. I've been trying to eat lower carb; a strict low carb diet doesn't work for me as I love fruit and chocolate way too much. But upping my protein and fats, while cutting out wheat and limiting grains, seems to work for me to lose weight, although it's rather slow.

Today I think I ate too much as I cooked a lot of new things and had to sample them all!

B: white currants, peach, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, alpro yogurt

L: cashew 'cheese' dip, raw carrot, cucumber, avocado, tomato, 'tuna' mayo (mostly mashed chickpeas, sweetcorn and mayo)

D: baked tofu, 2 hash browns (this was not in the plan, but I cooked some for the kids and then couldn't resist, ugh), carrots, broccoli and cauli

Snacks: squares of dark chocolate, plate of raw veg

Fatkins · 16/07/2019 07:55

Welcome just and snakes Smile!

I could murder some hash browns... Or some marmite on toast 😂. I am going to an graduation (not mine) at the end of this week, so will be staying in a hotel. I have no idea what vegan options they are going to have. It will either be nothing and I'll starve / eat nuts and avocados in my bedroom. Or they'll have loads and I'll almost certainly eat it! It is a celebration though, so I'll try to enjoy it without going OTT.

I'm still low carb-ing for now. So far it's fine and I feel a little slimmer already, although that may be just in my head.

Planning an avocado and nuts for breakfast. God knows what after that 😂. I'll think of something.

SnakesAndStones · 16/07/2019 08:40

Thanks Fatkins! Sorry to mention hash browns although I have found a variety that is cauliflower instead of potato, and quite yummy. Got to be a bit more healthy, surely??

This morning I weighed myself and I've lost 6 lbs since I started in June. I'd really like to lose another 1 st and 5 lb ideally but it's a good start.

Fatkins · 16/07/2019 13:39

Lunch!

It's fried Portobello mushrooms, with garlic and tarrigon, avocado and salad. Not sure it's keto, but it's low carb I think. Having strawberries for pudding.

Can I join too? I’m not actually vegan, but as a lactose intolerant vegetarian, the majority of my diet has been plant based for a long time.

I’ve recently started making changes to further reduce the animal products we consume as a family, as both my DH and one of my DS are really keen on going vegan. But I do worry a bit about getting all the nutrients we need, especially on a 1400 kcal diet 😬

I’ve been tracking everything I eat using the Cronometer app, but consistently come in low on both calcium and iron. If anyone has some good ideas on how to get more of that, I’d love to hear about it!

Fatkins · 16/07/2019 14:30

Welcome crazzzycat Smile!

Sorry, I am no help with the iron & calcium. Do you take any supplements? That's the only thing I can think of. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable on here will come along soon.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 18:52

Hello all! Fatkins that looked delicious!

crazzzycat do you eat much tofu? The tofu I buy has loads of calcium in, as does the cashew milk I drink.

Just checked and the blocks of tofu I use have 60% of RDA calcium and 60% RDA of iron, and it comes in at around 360 calories for the whole block. I eat a whole block everyday, and grill it.

That and a 250ml glass of cashew milk (again, the one I buy) has 35 calories and 30% RDA calcium, so between that and the tofu I hit 90% RDA calcium before even looking at my other eats.
Plus I have two cups of coffee with cashew milk per day too.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 19:02

I'm still motoring on, still doing every other day fasting, and still doing the 30 Day Shred and at least an hour of yoga every day.
I don't think I've ever felt so good! I feel stronger and so much more energetic, plus the 30 Day Shred is brilliant for reigning in my anxiety when it flares. Its good for anger management too!
I did the Shred twice the other day as I did it again after a rage inducing lunch with some of the other racist moron military wives Angry Blush

SnakesAndStones · 16/07/2019 21:01

Fatkins your food pictures look delicious!

Crazzzycat I struggle with iron and calcium as well. I take Spatone for iron because due to heavy periods I just wouldn't get enough otherwise. I also take a multivitamin/ mineral supplement, eat Alpro yogurts which contain calcium, drink calcium fortified soya milk and eat tofu once or twice a week but I'm not convinced it's enough. Part of my problem is I don't eat a lot of bread, which is how I think a lot of people top up to get enough.

SnakesAndStones · 16/07/2019 21:17

This conversation encouraged me to have a yogurt with calcium, rather than a vegan Magnum, so thanks for that Grin. I have to say listing what I have eaten is quite motivating not to eat rubbish.

B: smoothie with soya milk, pea protein powder, ground flaxseed, peanut butter, banana, pineapple and kale

L: leftover chickpea and sweetcorn 'tuna' salad, with tomatoes, avocado and toasted seeds

D: Tahini and lemon puy lentils with stir fried kale, courgette, broccoli, and peppers, plus a Linda McCartney lincolnshire sausage and steamed carrots and cauli.

Snacks: Almonds and dark chocolate, a satsuma, few doritos Blush an alpro yogurt, and a peach.

furrytoebean · 16/07/2019 21:54

Breakfast: 2 slices of banana bread Blush

Lunch: tofu and pearl barley with spinach and 2 slices of homemade toast

Dinner: wild rice with tahini, 2 gosh Mexican koftas and butternut squash Dhaal

Snacks: a chocolate tofu lolly and a sweet potato brownie.

Not a great day to be honest

Crazzzycat · 17/07/2019 01:48

Thanks for the tips all!

I tried tofu quite a few times as a teenager, but never really got on with it. Funnily enough, I did buy a packet of it last week, but not used it yet. This may just be the motivation I need to actually do something with it 😄

I’ll have a look at the supplements too. The only supplement I’m currently using is nutritional yeast, which is great, but not much use for calcium or iron. Oh, and I’d totally forgotten about soya yoghurts 🤦🏻‍♀️ Must stock up on those too!

Fatkins · 17/07/2019 13:37

Thanks snakes & dinosaurs! It was lovely.

Dinosaurs, you have my sympathies with the bigoted wives! Yikes!

Yesterday I could feel myself flagging a bit and I was busy cooking chicken etc for Omni extended family staying for dinner, so I just thought "feck it" and had vegan Quorn burgers in massive crusty roll, vegan mayo & ketchup, followed by a vegan hot cross bun, two Oreos and half a small bag of salt & vin crisps... And a glass of wine Blush. Quite the carb binge, I'm sure you'll agree!

But my word am I paying for it today! I feel rubbish. My poor tummy. Self inflicted obviously.

Today has been:

B: avocado & a few strawberries
L: mixed nuts and a spoonful of nut butter
D: planning roast low carb veg & olives
Snacks: tea & oatmilk; I know it isn't low carb, but there's no way I'm throwing it out and I'm not being strict anyway. I might have a ginger biccie as well, for my tummy you understand Wink.

I other news I had a cheeky weigh in this morning and I'm down another pound. That's a bit of a milestone for me, as it's half a stone off since I started and also as I can now officially say I'm less than a stone overweight 😂.

Looks like everyone else is doing well too! Hope everyone is having a good day. I'm ready for the weekend already.

Crazzzycat · 17/07/2019 17:25

We all have days like that sometimes @Fatkins. As long as they’re isolated incidents, I guess we’re ok.

Yesterday was a write off for me too. Trying to be better today and had a spicy bean wrap for lunch with carrots and salad. Dinner will be a bulgur and falafel bowl, with hummus, green veg and pomegranate. For snacks I had some oat milk, a banana and some nuts.

Not a bad day, if I manage to stick to it, but it is coming in above my 1400 kcal target 🤔 I must work on that!

SnakesAndStones · 17/07/2019 22:15

Awesome on the weigh in Fatkins! Sometimes I binge on carbs in the evening if I haven't got enough sleep, or if I've cut back too far during the day. It's like my body rears up and takes back control!

Crazzzy, I have 2 favourite tofu recipes if it would help...
itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/baked-tofu-bites/
This one is delicious and easy... and the other is a kind of version of this:
www.vegansociety.com/resources/recipes/quick-easy/tofu-scramble
But I use black salt which gives an amazing 'eggy' flavour, and I don't usually put the tomatoes and garlic in.

SnakesAndStones · 17/07/2019 22:24

I had a good day and I think we should ignore the fact I am now eating a packet of hula hoops.

B: sunflower and pumpkin seed, ground flaxseed, peach and grapes, soya milk
L: avocado, a Linda Mac lincolnshire sausage, sliced tomato and Vegenaise (my most beloved vegan substitute)
D: seed and sweet potato loaf, lots of steamed veg including brussels, and veg gravy.

Snacks: dried apple, pecans, cashews, dried apricots, a satsuma, bag of hula hoops. Oh and some rhubarb and custard sweets in the cinema! Sounds terrible but it was small quantities I promise, and felt like a real indulgent treat.
