Vegan dieters support thread?

Hello!

Is anyone out there trying to lose weight while also being / trying to be vegan / plant based?

I am and would love some company! I have very recently gone vegan, but am wary of gaining weight. I actually really need to lose some, so I'm attempting both things at once.

I am doing Weight Watchers, but any approach, (but obviously vegan food), would be very welcome to join me.

That looks delicious vix.

Do you use silken tofu for your scramble?

My avocado, as boring as it sounds, was a particularly delicious one. I just ate it out of the skin with a teaspoon 🥑.

Yes silken tofu is definitely better for scrambles I find.

Lunch.

That looks lovely vix!

Here's mine! I think it looks a lot better in person, but you'll have to take my word for it 😂.

That looks delicious!

Fatkins · 13/07/2019 14:08

It really was delicious! If I do say so myself 😂. So modest!

My cooking is seriously hit and miss, so it sometimes surprises me when I make something nice.

Oh my word. I went to a party and ate All The Things. I ate so much that my abdomen physically ACHED. I am still not remotely hungry and have heartburn. I did t even have any alcohol but feel like I have a food hangover!!

Eating is a mug's game and I advise you all against it Sad

Fatkins · 14/07/2019 08:37

Oh no! Poor you contessa! I wonder if you just aren't used to lots of food because you've been dieting. Hope you feel better soon. I am familiar with the biscuit food hangover myself and have some recent experience of it BlushGrin!

Starting today oil pulling and then having black coffee, an avocado and a low carb smoothie, (spinach, a few berries, flax seed & coconut oil).

I'm out today but might just suggest a picnic in the park and a drink, so I can control what I eat. I'll just buy some nuts and seeds from a shop.

No idea what to do for dinner! Will cross that bridge when I come to it.

I’m trying to lose a bit of weight and been vegan for three years.

I’ve never tried low carb as a vegan as all the low calorie, high nutrient food seem to be high carb.

Aren’t avocados and coconut oil really high in calories?

I find cutting out processed stuff really helps me lose weight.

whiteroseredrose · 14/07/2019 09:06

Can I join you? I'm trying to be vegan but slip up with cheese occasionally.

Previous dieting success centred around tuna in water, hard boiled eggs and fat free Greek yoghurt all of which i no longer eat.

I had some success a few weeks ago with going low carb and having chopped fruit with Alpro yogurt for breakfast, salad with mixed beans or soup for lunch then vegan something for dinner.

I'm trying to avoid processed food and don't like fake meat anyway (didn't like real meat). So I'm struggling. I'd forgotten about ratatouille so will make some of that and also a chickpea curry.

Big problem is as I get home. Sadly wine, crisps and nuts are vegan..... 😢

Vix20678 · 14/07/2019 09:12

@furrytoebean you have to kind of let go of traditional thinking when it comes to low carbing. Calories are secondary to carbs. So yes, an avocado is calorie-rich but they’re good calories. I eat 2 a day most days along with nuts, seeds, but butters etc. I struggle to get above 1200 calories still and I’m losing weight steadily and consistently.

HandsOffMyRights · 14/07/2019 09:15

Whiterose, watch the wine and crisps though...

My MIL came round with wine last night and it had milk and egg in it..

Also, the other day I thought I'd steal a bag of the kids' Pickled Onion Monster Munch - until I read the label.

None of this stopped me drinking other wine and scoffing other crisps sadly. Hence the need to diet...

furrytoebean · 14/07/2019 09:16

That’s great for you vix Smile
How much do you have to lose?

I think for me low carb vegan would be a bit extreme.

But I suppose my diet is extreme in a different way as I cook everything from scratch and don’t drink alcohol.

I think finding what works for you is key.

LooseAtTheSeams · 14/07/2019 09:38

Really pleased to find this thread - I did veganuary because I had a serious cheese addiction and then continued because I think what I'm eating is definitely better. My main thing is checking the sugar content of food so fewer carbs and trying not to snack.
Downfall is that a lot of wine is now labelled vegan so I'm planning a dry week this week!

whiteroseredrose · 14/07/2019 09:40

I do check that the wine is vegan, Sainsbury's is very good for that.... Maybe it would be better if they weren't!

Anyway hoping to pilfer some ideas here.

HandsOffMyRights · 14/07/2019 09:45

Thanks for the top tip Whiterose re Sainsbury's.

I need to get better at checking wine and have installed this on my phone now www.barnivore.com/liquor?page=8

Fatkins · 14/07/2019 09:53

vix

YY, I couldn't believe when I logged all my very high calorie foods yesterday, that it only came to 1400 overall. And then I found I didn't want the berries and coconut yoghurt I'd allowed, so it actually ended up being less. It would have been even less if I hadn't had wine too!

Furry, your woe does sound excellent and probably more sustainable and healthy in the long run, but I'm trying every trick in the book to shift the excess weight which piled on at alarming speed after I stopped boob feeding my incredibly hungry baby at Christmas.

Weigh in today and I am 12 stone 10. So that is 6lbs down from my weight a few weeks ago. Hurrah!

Welcome whiterose and looseattheseams Smile!

Well done Fatkins! You're brave weighing in on Sunday though; there's far too much risk of Saturday night binging for that to work for me (or is that why you do it: to limit binge risk)?!

Vix20678 · 14/07/2019 10:48

@furrytoebean I also cook everything from scratch (although a lot is raw at the mo) and very rarely have alcohol. My diet doesn’t feel extreme at all but I realise some may look at it that way :)

Vix20678 · 14/07/2019 10:49

Oh I forgot to say, my ideal weight is 4kg less than I am now. I’ve lost 3kg since starting this 2 weeks ago, much of it was the initial drop of water weight you get at the start of low carbing. I’ve slowed right down now to a healthier and more sustainable loss.

Vix20678 · 14/07/2019 10:54

And @furrytoebean you’re so right about cutting out the processed stuff. That’s definitely made a massive difference here. There are so many tempting vegan things in the shop and I have 2 vegan kids so they take full advantage of it all. Sadly for me, if I do that I pile the weight on!!

SalemSpellman · 14/07/2019 11:20

Ahhh my people, I have found you! I'm in the process of becoming vegan - I say becoming as I keep finding animal products in my favourite things. I'll get the hang of it eventually. I have 2 stone to loose! I've just invested in an slow cooker/ pressure cooker as an incentive to try new things/ not eat rubbish when I get home from work. Nice to meet you all!

Fatkins · 14/07/2019 11:26

Welcome Salem Smile!

Contessa, you are correct, I have decided to weigh in on Sundays so that I don't go bananas on Saturdays Grin. That's the theory anyway.
