Vegan dieters support thread?

Hello!

Is anyone out there trying to lose weight while also being / trying to be vegan / plant based?

I am and would love some company! I have very recently gone vegan, but am wary of gaining weight. I actually really need to lose some, so I'm attempting both things at once.

I am doing Weight Watchers, but any approach, (but obviously vegan food), would be very welcome to join me.

Welcome parabella Smile.

Sorry about the migraine Luaa Sad.

So today went brilliantly for me, until dinner time, when I was dealing with grumpy, hot children and waiting for DH to come home, basically so I could eat something 😂. Until then, I'd been completely fine and if I could have just snuck up to my room, had a bath and gone to bed with a book I'd have been grand, but sadly that would result in pretty serious child neglect 😂.

I think I then slightly overdid it at dinner time and definitely overshot my calorie allowance 👎.

I don't know if fasting is the best thing for me... I will sleep on it and decide what to do tomorrow.

I wonder if straightforward calorie counting might be the best.

I realise I'm changing tactic a lot on here btw 😂. Trial and error and all that. As long as I continue on a downward trend weight-wise 🤞.

You're welcome Contessa I hope it works for you, and definitely on the evil side Grin

Oh no Luaa hope you feel better soon Sad. I used to get headachy, not quite in the migraine league (they come out if I turn the air con on Hmm) when I first started fasting, it stopped after my second fast day fortunately.

Smile Paraballa. I'm very boring, I eat the same thing every fast day, grilled tofu with a turmeric and tamari sauce.

I dice a block of tofu (the block I use it 280 calories in total), then put it in a non stick cake pan and grill for ten minutes.

Then in a mug I mix a tablespoon of tamari with 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric, some black pepper, paprika and oregano (that's 15 calories for the brand I use)

I drizzle that over the tofu, stir it to make sure all the tofu is covered and grill for another five minutes.

I love it and could eat it forever Blush Grin

Ah no Fatkins it sounds like you did brilliantly though Smile. Would doing one meal per day (in the evenings) work better instead?

You'd still get some of the benefits of fasting, and if you did it two or three days per week you'd get a huge calorie reduction overall.

Thanks dinosaurs, that's a great suggestion! I might try that and see how it goes.

Either that or maybe 16:8, but I always think the danger with 16:8 is that I'd overeat during the eight hour window.

I remember reading in the original 5:2 book years ago that you can fast for 24hrs instead of a full day and night if you can't manage it. I always thought that sounded too good to be true, but actually, it's better than nothing isn't it? And maybe if I did it every other day it would be a big enough calorie defecit. I'm going to try it. I'll be my own guinea pig, (not a real guinea pig, as this is a vegan thread Grin).

Also, the key will be not to overdo it on non fast days, seeing as I'm only doing wuss fasting 😂.

I like the idea of fasting day diets but they don’t work for me at all (feel faint and dizzy all the time). I’m in awe of those of you doing them!

dinosaurs I’m going to add tofu to my next shop...that sounds delicious.

Fair enough re fasting purple. It could, very easily, not be for me either. I'm just experimenting to see what I can stick to Blush.

All good here today.

I have had:

B: oat milk latte and a teeny tahini bite from local fancy pants bakery
L: peanut butter and marmite sandwich, an apple, a nectarine and an orange (too much fruit)?
Snacks: an Alpro chocolate hazelnut yoghurt thingy

Planning a jacket potato and hummus with salad for dinner, then back to fasting tomorrow.

How is everyone else doing?

Breakfast: 50g porridge oats with 10g raisins and 125ml coconut milk - cook it up and it's lush!

Lunch: homemade potato/leek/lentil/whatever we had in the fridge soup, plus a scoop of kimchi (again lush, and v low cal)!

Snack: diet fanta

I have had less than usual today as I'm off to London for a talk and so am saving room for a Tesco meal deal for dinner (falafel wrap, popcorn and diet drink). Plus a latte obviously Grin

Excellent work Purple!

I've got my period and am fucking ravenous. Does anyone else find this happens to them? I prowl the house growling and hunting for tofu.

Fatkins · 12/07/2019 09:27

That's fab purple! Onward and upward/downward!

Contessa I usually get really peckish and crave sweet things and chocolate in the run up to my period. You may really need the calories? Maybe worth upping your allowance? But don't listen to me, I'm rubbish at dieting 😂😂😂.

So, yesterday I did not fast in the end. I'm trying a different approach now - sort of intuitive eating / healthy eating sort of thing.

Yesterday was:

B: porridge with oat milk, cinnamon and milled flax seed
L: meatless farm co burger with vegan mayo, mustard, ketchup & onions Blush. Very UNdiety!

D: mushroom bourgignon, garlic potatoes and peas... And 2 x glasses of (vegan) wine... Oh dear 😬

Today I'm atoning 😂.

B: green smoothie
L: homemade vegetable soup
D: Thai red curry with veg, tofu & brown rice

I've also had to cancel tomorrow's yoga class unfortunately due to a diary class, but hey ho. I'll do some at home and I'm doing an extra one next week to make up for it.

Weigh in day for me is Sunday, but I might take a sneaky peek in a minute... See what the damage is 🙈.

Ah not too bad actually. I think I'm down a little from last time.

I am going to tell you my actual weight, as I am losing track and this can be my record. Nobody else has to share theirs obviously!

Starting weight: 13 stone 2

Current weight: 12 stone 11

Weight I'd like to be: 11 stone.

However, I would gladly take 11 and a half, as that would put me comfortably into the healthy weight zone for my height (5'8"). I'm currently 15lbs, officially overweight.

Ooooh can I share an amazing recipe for the nicest and easiest vegan chocolate treat?

Take half a cup of vegan milk, a packet of dr oetakers dark cooking chocolate, then melt in the microwave, then blend with half a packet of silken tofu and it’s like very expensive posh mousse.

You can put it into six small pots and put it in the fridge and have it as mousse or put it in ice lolly moulds.

It works out at about 120 calories per lolly and is AMAZING!

I have one as my treat pretty much every day.

Well done to those sticking at it and losing weight. I lost 1lb this week, but tbh I wasn’t counting my oat milk and as I’m a huge coffee drinker, I was drinking loads. I’ve swapped to almond milk and there’s a huge difference in syns, so I’ll see if that helps. I’m doing slimming world so ‘syn’ my foods and drinks. I can have 15 a day but there are loads of foods that are syn free.

I had two Linda McCartney 0 syns sausages, a potato waffle 2 1/2 syns, sweet corn and cooked cherry tomatoes 0 syns and a cup off coffee for breakfast.

For lunch I think I’ll have finely chopped salad with chilli and garlic salt, followed by a big bowl of fruit salad with Alpro coconut yogurt. 1/2 syn.

For dinner I’m planning on making a pitta bread pizza (a healthy extra so doesn’t count) made with vegan cheese 3 syns and loaded with veg (minus olives 😭) with home made chips, made in the actifry fryer, which will be 0 points, but will add 2 syns for the oil as I hate those low calorie sprays.

That’s 7 syns but I’ll be drinking lots of coffee so will add 2syns for milk. That leaves me 5 to Indulge myself with.

S1naid, yeah, plant milk is a killer for me - I NEED my tea so have allocated almost 15% of my daily calories to cover milk requirements!

furrytoe I suspect you of sabotaging us all Wink thank you for the recipe, sounds delicious! My children will also thank you.....

S1naidSucks · 12/07/2019 11:11

Which milk are you using ContessaLovesTheSunshine? 400ml of Alomond milk is 2 1/2 syns compared to only 100 unsweetened oat milk! The oat milk is nicer, but I was willing to give up coffee and the Almond milk isn’t too bad, but looks a bit more watery, in comparison.

S1naid I have found that soy milk is the only type that's palatable in tea, and it usually comes in at 33 cal/100ml unsweetened. I have given myself 500ml per day (i.e 150cal) to accomodate all my tea-swilling!

I do have coconut milk in my porridge though (16 cal/100ml) :)
