Giving up sugar for January, maybe longer

GrumpyOldBag · 04/01/2017 18:17

I have decided to try giving up sugar.

Anyone else tried this?

I am going to continue eating fresh fruit, but not dried or juice.

No processed foods containing sugar.

And obviously no fizzy drinks - but don't drink those anyway.

Anyone tried doing this? Can I have honey on my porridge?

I think dry wine & vodka OK?

Anyone got any advice to share? Thanks

Phew, this thread dropped off and I lost you for a while!

I maintained this week. But I feel awful this weekend. Mostly in a grump, for no reason. I really, really, really want a creme egg. I can't remember a craving like this for ages

honeyroar · 19/03/2017 18:45

Hello! Have one if it's really that big a craving. I've given in once in a while and had the odd thing, tbh it is never as good as you think it will be! Otherwise can you stem it off with a small bowl of grapes or something? Perhaps you're coming down with something?

honeyroar · 25/03/2017 17:51

Well I was lucky! Not only did I keep off those two extra pounds that came off when I had flu, but I managed to lose another one as well this week. Very happy bunny. Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Noofly · 26/03/2017 21:07

That's fantastic, honey! Looks like it's staying off and more!

I lost a pound this week which I'm happy about. I'm only 4lbs away from not being overweight which is much better than the 2s I started out at. I did end up having dessert tonight as we were at MILs and it was just placed in front of me and I felt it would be rude to refuse it (one of these individually made in a glass desserts) but I did manage to refuse multiple suggestions of having some alcohol as it was Mother's Day, so it could have been worse calorie wise.

honeyroar · 26/03/2017 23:13

That's brilliant Noofly. Must be wonderful being so near.

I've got pmt today and have eaten a bag of crisps, two biscuits and three chocs!!😡 Am also fed up because my husband (who doesn't need to lose any weight at all, in fact needs to add some) has been off sick all week withvthe same bug and he lost 3/4 of a stone!!

Noofly · 27/03/2017 06:49

That's just typical, isn't it? You wouldn't believe how much crap DH eats (large bags of crisps, tubs of ice cream, frequent meals out etc) and he still loses weight! He's within the healthy category but has decided to drop a bit alongside me and somehow manages to do so while stuffing his face all day. It's very unfair.

HuckleberryGin · 27/03/2017 12:36

My Dh has the metabolism of a teenage boy. He does load software exercise, but still eats whole packets of biscuits, cakes etc. Not fair!

I'm now down by 18 lbs. Slow but sure. I did have that creme egg and it was lovely! Also had one celebration chocolate on Mother's day.

I'm on antibiotics a sinus infection and I swear they are making me hungrier!

GrumpyOldBag · 27/03/2017 18:50

Well I got 4 boxes of chocolates for Mother's day.

My family don't seem to have noticed I've given up sugar!

Huckleberry 18lbs is fantastic! Any sort of illness makes me more hungry. I sweet it's some sort of distraction thing from feeling unwell but is very annoying.

GrumpyOldBag 4 boxes of chocolates is annoying! Are you going to keep them or give them away? It drives me mad when people don't take me seriously when I say I'm really trying to not eat sugary food. Fortunately DH is really supportive (other than stuffing his face in front of me, but that doesn't really bother me) but other people aren't as good.

Having said that, I'm currently sitting in Starbucks having some sort of high calorie, high caffeine latte thing. Very very bad of me and I can only blame boredom and lack of anything better to do as I'm stuck in town waiting for two hours for DD's choir rehearsal for a concert tomorrow to finish. I'm telling myself it's the first caffeine I've had since before Christmas and the first real junk in 3 months so it won't kill me and I'll be back to normal tomorrow.

Noofly · 28/03/2017 18:56

swear not sweet

honeyroar · 29/03/2017 10:13

Oh gosh, four boxes of chocolate! How frustrating!

18lbs is fantastic. People must be noticing now.

Noofly I hope that the concert goes well. I have quite a few lattes to and from work (200+miles each way), I thought they had to be better than the Redbulls I was having previously! I didn't realise that you'd given up caffeine too.

honeyroar · 29/03/2017 11:00

Oh, and what are you guys eating for breakfast? I'm getting bored of porridge and sloping back to fruit and fibre.

HuckleberryGin · 29/03/2017 13:29

Still porridge and banana. I'm quite a boring, routine person. Try different t types of porridge? Peanut butter and cocoa.

Of something on toast?

Noofly · 29/03/2017 15:22

I'm also a boring routine person. I'm still on porridge. On cycling days I have it with cinnamon, walnuts and banana. On non cycling days I just have it with cinnamon and berries.

Yeah, I gave up caffeine at the same time. Partly because it makes me groggy after the initial alertness and partly because I don't actually like the taste of coffee and was having it with a ton of milk and sugar.

honeyroar · 29/03/2017 16:56

I'm a boring routine person too, I just can't get porridge into it! Not tried it with banana, I will have a go. I've done cinnamon, nuts, not tried berries either yet. I think one of my problems is I don't like it piping hot, and by the time it's got to the temp I like its also gone thick and glue like!

GrumpyOldBag · 29/03/2017 18:27

Fruit and Fibre is 25% sugar!!

OP posts:
honeyroar · 29/03/2017 18:41

I know, I can taste it. I pick the raisins out, which will get rid of a bit. I ate it the first month of doing no sugar and still lost loads of weight. I then had a month of porridge but went back to it when my throat was sore as hell when ill as the cold was nicer. I've just got back into the habit of it, it's been my de rigeur breakfast when home for years. I just need to find a new go to regular breakfast that I like..

honeyroar · 30/03/2017 22:18

Huckleberry, I forgot to say, you've lost a Nelly dog in weight! My smallest dog weighs 18lbs..

I managed to chip another pound off this week, so 16lbs in total. I've got a challenging week ahead, we're going staying with friends on Saturday night and going out for the day on Sunday, then spending three days in York for my husband's birthday.

Giving up sugar for January, maybe longer
HuckleberryGin · 31/03/2017 21:47

If it goes gloopy add some more milk and stir!

Love that I've lost a teeny dog!

Noofly · 01/04/2017 18:09

Oh honey you have horses and dogs! My DD would love to go live with you (well, if she knew about you she would. don't worry, I'm not discussing you with my 11 year old!) Grin

I'm down another 1.5lbs so am just 2.5 measly pounds overweight. We're off to Russia in two weeks time and I'd hoped to not be overweight by then. This week will likely be my maintaining week so I doubt I'll make that target but am so close I don't really care.

honeyroar · 02/04/2017 21:12

Well you're nearly there, even if you do stay the same this week. It will soon be off. Wow, Russia sounds exciting!

I've been way off plan at my friend's house this weekend, had loads of sugary foods and Prosecco! Hopefully we walked a lot of it off today, we've been walking around the deer park of a stately home for about five hours..

Your daughter would probably love it here, most children do, but they go home filthy (and worn out!). You're welcome if you're ever up North!

honeyroar · 10/04/2017 23:39

Hi, how are you all doing? We went away to York for a midweek break, ate out a lot, big meals, healthy stuff and no dessert, and walked a fair few miles each day (even climbed the 275 steps to the top of the Minster - thought I was going to die!) but drank lots of Prosecco! I've put a lb on this week, which I can accept as not bad all in all! Hopefully claw that back off soon.

Noofly · 12/04/2017 20:16

That's not bad at all! I fully expect to put in at least that while we are away next week.

Last Saturday I was only half a pound overweight!! I haven't had time to exercise this week though and won't be able to next week but am figuring I'l start afresh when we get back from our holiday. I'm going to eat sensibly but will have the odd dessert/cake if I fancy it.

I still want to lose just under a stone as that will put me firmly in the middle of the healthy weight range.

honeyroar · 13/04/2017 19:50

Oh to only be half a lb overweight! That's brilliant. Have a wonderful holiday.

HuckleberryGin · 16/04/2017 20:41

Lost half a lb this week. But I have not stayed sugar free today. A creme egg and some other chocolate has been scoffed. Back on it tomorrow.
