Giving up sugar for January, maybe longer

GrumpyOldBag · 04/01/2017 18:17

I have decided to try giving up sugar.

Anyone else tried this?

I am going to continue eating fresh fruit, but not dried or juice.

No processed foods containing sugar.

And obviously no fizzy drinks - but don't drink those anyway.

Anyone tried doing this? Can I have honey on my porridge?

I think dry wine & vodka OK?

Anyone got any advice to share? Thanks

1lb this week, only just. I'm definitely not over eating calorie wise. And I'm running 3 times a week. Ah well, I suppose slow and steady is best anyway.

Lucked · 17/02/2017 14:34

Still a loss Huck and I do think weight doesn't come off smoothly. Well done on the running, I plan to start c25k this weekend.

I am expecting a low loss this week although I haven't been eating sugar I have had a couple of larger portions for my main meals. I am also struggling this week with thoughts of my favourite sugary treats I have come so close to giving in.

But what is really worrying me is that I am picking up new scales so who knows what I will weigh tomorrow!

msrisotto · 18/02/2017 08:17

I am disappointed in my lack of progress and feel like giving up Sad

honeyroar · 18/02/2017 10:07

Oh that's a shame Msrisotto. What's happening? I remember you were nearly at goal, weren't you, so perhaps that's why. Are you keeping a food diary? Just wondering what you were eating.. Perhaps those losing quickly have more to lose? I certainly am nowhere near goal. About three stone for me.😢

I lost two lbs this week, taking me to 8lbs in my first month. Not a lot compared to some people, but a lb a week loss for a year would be three and a half stone in a year.. I've lost faster on ww before, but I feel this is more sustainable. And I've easily dropped a dress size, I managed to get a hot water bottle in my waistband of my skirt at work the other night, when I could barely zip it up after Xmas. It's worth taking measurements as well as weighing yourself, I'm kicking myself because I didn't at the start.

I hope others are carrying on, I'm going to, I'm enjoying it (amazed to say!) and am finding checking in on here very useful. Thanks ladies.

msrisotto · 18/02/2017 10:49

Bloody well done honey! That's amazing!
Last time I quit sugar I lost 1-2lbs a week. The difference this week has been slightly bigger lunches.

msrisotto · 18/02/2017 10:53

Yeah I only want to lose 5-7lbs

Lucked · 18/02/2017 10:53

MsRisotto what do you mean? Do you want to try something else.? What about adding something in like some more exercise or 5:2.

I would be gutted to go back to how I was before but I was eating large bars of chocolate and packets of biscuits, I was really out of control. I was also piling on the pounds so giving up for me would mean weight gain.
I have been losing weight at a reasonable rate but my starting BMI was 28.8!

msrisotto · 18/02/2017 11:02

I have just been feeling really...not sure what the right word is...not deprived, but sore about not having 'treats' at the weekends. I won't go back to eating cake , chocolate etc during the week but I was hoping that a few weeks of no sugar would get me to my goal or at least close to it by the end of this month then I could reintroduce treats at weekends.

It doesn't help that i'm on jury service so have a lot of enforced waiting and sitting around and more limited lunch options. I'll keep on it...I don't want to get worse.

honeyroar · 18/02/2017 12:04

Give it another week or two? I've had a bowl of grapes at night, or a banana, which have enough sugar to stop me grabbing a biscuit. Ive even had a choc biscuit every now and again, but to be honest it wasn't that amazing.

Yes the jury service and hanging around won't help

msrisotto · 19/02/2017 20:32

Ok. I did fall off the wagon big style this weekend. I feel rubbish for it!! Realising why I quit in the first place, I am so all or nothing. Maybe it's not such a bad thing as I get to realise how crap it makes me feel.

ASDismynormality · 19/02/2017 21:21

Mrsrisotto, it's sometimes good to realise why you are restricting yourself.

I've stuck to no sugar, really surprised I have lasted so long!

honeyroar · 19/02/2017 21:29

Don't be hard on yourself. It's only one weekend. I can be hard on myself too, but it does no good, you just end up giving up. Just draw a line and carry on.

(If it helps, I've not been so good either this weekend - something in the air??!)

HuckleberryGin · 20/02/2017 08:48

I drank a lot of beer and ate a lot of bread this weekend, although it was sourdough bread without sugar.

I also went for a ridiculous run- I planned a route, then got lost and ended up doing 6 miles (I was planning maybe 4). Actually had to get DH to pick me up as it would have been 8 miles to home. Haven't run that far since November!

msrisotto · 20/02/2017 08:51

Yep, i'm not going to dwell on it, these things happen and it's ok, you just have to move on and not let it make you give up. It is clearly emotional eating for me and I really want to break that.

Haha, well done Huckleberry!

Lucked · 20/02/2017 16:37

1lb down so 1stone in total 🎉

Well I didn't go for a run so Huck really is putting me to shame. Well done.

honeyroar · 21/02/2017 13:08

Well done Lucked! That must feel great.

HuckleberryGin · 24/02/2017 10:38

Bugger. I weighed myself on Wednesday and I'd lost 1lb. But today on weigh in day I've stayed the same. Well I've lost 0.2lb.

honeyroar · 25/02/2017 22:58

I hope it's disappeared again Huckleberry!

I lost another 1lb this week, slow and steady seems to be the way for me. My total is still -8lbs as I added it up wrong last week! I've had a fun week though - big fat Indian takeaway one day, two hotel breakfasts and a good friend on my work trip who had recently got engaged, so two bottles of prosecco between us over a meal one night! Back on the good behaviour now!

HuckleberryGin · 26/02/2017 15:52

Well by Saturday morning I'd lost 1.5lbs! Well done honeyroar

honeyroar · 26/02/2017 18:01

Brilliant HuckleberryGin, at last a deserved result!

Hope everyone else is doing ok, it's gone quiet and I was enjoying your success stories.

msrisotto · 26/02/2017 18:15

Hello. Im starting afresh today, ready for the spring and summer.

HuckleberryGin · 26/02/2017 19:43

I've just entered a half marathon in 10 weeks, so I have to keep running too!

GrumpyOldBag · 27/02/2017 17:37

Glad this thread is still going, it dropped off my Threads I'm On page.

Still sticking with the no sugar thing!

Hello ladies, glad you're still around.

HuckleberryGin wow! Im in awe. I've just bought new trainers with a view to starting doing the gym when I'm away. I just need some fat person's exercise gear, everything I've seen is tight and I'm too fat to wear tight clothes just yet!

Lucked · 27/02/2017 22:21

I am down 2lbs this week so 16 lbs total. Although scale was wavering a little and doesn't do half pounds so I maybe borderline.

I started with 4st to lose and now have 2st12 -exactly what my tall 5yo weighs🙄. I was thinking this was ridiculous (because he seems huge) but was a on this website rechecking my TDEE and the ideal weight it suggested is the same as my goal and what I weighed on my wedding day. It does say to take this with a pinch of salt but it has motivated me to stick to my original goal even if it is a long road.

grumpy nice to hear you are still going strong.

Huck well done on the weight loss. Committing to the half marathon is very impressive well done.

mrsrisotto glad you are back on it ..

BUT what are we all doing about Pancake Tuesday. Savoury only or a bit of a pass. I will be observing no sugar, treats and alcohol for lent so not sure if I should have a few sweet ones.
