Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

Morning all,
Hanging in at 10 stone 13.5. Haven't achieved much this month really, but have managed to maintain what I lost before Xmas.

I am lagging behind my colleagues on the weigh-and-shame chart (I'm claiming it to be the tortoise rather than the hare strategy.....)

breward how nice to be treated :)

Big wave to everyone else

eltsihT · 31/01/2016 16:42

Well done breward on the loss a
and grumpy on maintaining.

I have had 2 sick kids (tummy bugs) this week and they have had me up all night. So I have been seriously snacking just to keep going through the day.

63.2kg last week and to my surprise 62.5kg this week.

Salzundessig · 31/01/2016 18:24

Well done everyone who lost! I have been on the wagon for 2 weeks and have had some pretty epic s days! However, only put on 0.7kg in 2 weeks, yay. I now weigh less than I did in my last pregnancy at the same point, despite starting 8kg heavier. Here's hoping to this sensible weight gain continuing...

breward · 31/01/2016 19:14

eltsihT- by my reckoning you are about 1lb off losing a stone- WOW!

I had to convert kg to stones. You are about 9st 8lb.

I was that weight before I started a new job last year. We get lunch provided by my employer each day and I put on over a stone in a year.

Grumpy- I love your 'weigh and shame' name for you staff room chart. I am very competitive so I am determined that my chart will only go one way!

eltsihT · 31/01/2016 21:14

Breward i make it 9st 11lb. I am delighted though with my progress. I am aiming to get to 9st 6lb.

I am finding it really hard going at the minute, and am surprised I am still loosing weight. I suppose it just shows how much snacking I really did as I have pretty much cut it out.

I would love to improve my diet overall I really want to try to pick healthy snacks when I do, you know like fruit. But I get the urge to eat and go and make toast going straight past the fruit bowl.

I have noticed in the last fortnight that I am starting to enjoy the taste of water. I have always struggled to like water, prefering squash/ fizzy drinks/fruit juice and that's taken a year from having at least a can of fizzy a day to enjoying water. Which is something I never thought would happen.

Slimmingcrackers · 07/02/2016 17:05

Hello all! Hope everyone is ok! Well done to everyone who is making progress and encouraging cheers to those who are struggling!

On the road (UK) for half term so pls forget v. brief post! And apologies for not writing any personal messages!

Just wanted to report in and say that I have started my dieting regime again, having gone up to 86 kg Blush

Started today!

I'm afraid, strictly speaking, that I will not be following the no 'S' diet so I hope you don't mind me still posting on here!

I will be following a combo of fewer carbs, smaller portion sizes, managed snacks, not eating after 8pm at night, etc etc, so some of the principles are the same.

I have an end of June weight target (dd's godfather's wedding) which is now unrealistic. I am now really really regretting that I didn't stick to the diet from last September when I started this thread (and from when target would have been eminently realistic - urgh sorry horrible grammar - but hope you kwim) but never mind, there is no point in looking back, I shall just take this on board as a valuable lesson and try to remember it going forwards!!

How is everyone else getting on? Will be back to catch up with you all in a week or so hopefully!

Big waves!!!

grumpysquash2 · 07/02/2016 17:36

Hi All,
I am 10 stone 12 today (69.1kg)
Losing very slowly overall, but nevertheless still going. Goal is still to be under 10 stone 7 by the Easter holidays - at current rate will not manage, but trying anyway.

SC nice to hear from you - have a great half term! Ours isn't until next week. There is still more than 4 months until the wedding, which is quite a while.....

How is everyone else? Ellen, I've been missing your menus :(

Slimmingcrackers · 10/02/2016 14:13

Waves back at Grumpy sorry for late reply, travelled to S France yesterday (having deposited dd in UK with sister) which sounds glamorous but decluttering relative's apptment following a bereavement. Doing the kitchen today; chucking out loads of out-of-date jars and tins.

Travel and a weekend of heavy decluttering not best scenario for dieting but trying to cut down on carbs and sugar. Not doing total withdrawal because recovering from gynae procedure and need energy for task ahead! Cutting down substantially from usual intake though.

Well done on your weight loss and everyone else who is losing (sorry not on big computer so can't scroll down very easily).

Hope everyone is doing OK and that the start of Lent provides a bit of a motivation. (I have given up Wine and Chocolate

Sorry for 'me' 'me' post - back in a week or so to catch up with everyone individually- in the meantime, keep going everyone!!

breward · 10/02/2016 19:28

Rubbish week... A pound on for me.

I have put it on the 'weigh and shame' chart at work.

eltsihT · 12/02/2016 17:26

Nice to see you again sc. breward I am missing Ellen too.

My weight also went up last week from 62.5 to 62.9kg hoping for a better week this week especially as I am looking after my parents dog, and am absolutely shattered from walking her.

DH who is doing no s'ing with me has managed to go from 16st10lb to 15st 13lb since January.

Both of us are finding it hard going not to snack especially as mil is very sick and we are eating very late.

rivierliedje · 13/02/2016 10:34

I'm ashamed to say that I've fallen completely of the wagon since Christmas. Time to start again. There's a campaign here every year during lent to get people to eat less meat (difficult in this country), but this year they're also letting you track days you only eat in season veg, don't buy anything in non-recyclable packaging and don't throw away any food. So that's quite the incentive to eat healthily (crisps, sweets and biscuits all come in plastic packaging) and I'm taking it! Any excuse to eat better is a good excuse imho.
So, even though AF has arrived and I was on call yesterday (very busy), I'm quite motivated to rejoin.

eltsihT · 14/02/2016 09:39

River! Lovely to see you.

62.5kg again today, so slightly down on last Sunday but not much.

To be honest, I have been snacking quite a lot and letting biscuits sneak back into my diet.

This week I am going to try to have at least 1 day when I don't cheat.

grumpysquash2 · 14/02/2016 10:18

Morning all,
I am 68.4kg today (10 stone 11), a pound down on last week.

Nice to see the old faces (so to speak)

rivierliedje · 14/02/2016 18:51

I like your idea of just getting one day right. It's a lot less pressure that way. I'll go for tomorrow.

Ellentheegret · 15/02/2016 14:54

Hello all, sorry for being so absent lately and thanks for asking after me - I'm really touched by that Smile

It's been an up and down few weeks here.. Was getting massively fed up with my lack of progress so decided to try a different tack and went for hard core low carb. Very successful first week - lost 7lb (!), stalled a bit in the 2nd week and then the inevitable happened: life got in the way! Each time I seem to be getting somewhere with a diet something will happen (usually work related) to leave me stressed & exhausted I I just can't cope without comfort eating (& gin). Arg!

Anyhow, I'm still on the low carb (& still 5lb down) and I think I will stick with it. Also going to try for no s (or at least minimal s) at the same time. I think I need to be really strict so that I actually see results, otherwise I just lose motivation and get nowhere.

Sorry for the incredibly long and self involved post! It is lovely to see the old crew back here, along with new faces.

SC - I hope you are recovering well Flowers

Rivier - that campaign sounds great - is it a government thing?

EltsihT - I am massively Envy at your dh's loss! I don't think I could handle it if my dp was dieting with me, I would get too competitive!

Grumpy - well done on the loss! Will try to oblige re menus although with the low carb thing they are looking a little strange Hmm

Waves to breward and everyone else Smile

menu for today so far:

B - Greek yogurt, babybell
L - konjac noodles with pesto, rocket, courgette & mozzarella, more yogurt

rivierliedje · 15/02/2016 20:42

I've been interested in low carb ellen, but don't think I could swing it as a vegan. I do want to eat something other than vegetables.

The campaing is run by a charity www.dagenzondervlees.be
it's quite popular.
So far so good today.

Ellentheegret · 16/02/2016 20:36

Yeah, tbh i think it would be quite tough, rivier.

Ok day here so far. Just heading home after a 12 hour shift and due back in at 6.30am tomorrow. I WILL NOT DRINK GIN, I WILL NOT DRINK GIN, I WILL NOT DRINK GIN.

Menu so far

B - protein bar
L - 2 boiled eggs, fajita strips, coconut yogurt
D - 2 boiled eggs
Also snacked on a couple of nuts and will have avocado salad when I get in (and no gin!)

rivierliedje · 20/02/2016 11:03

I've had a good last few days, actually stuck to No s two days in a row! So now I'm down 1,2kg. I've not eaten particularly well either, just focussed on the three rules. The last two days I've had porridge with peanut butter for breakfast, vegetable and lentil soup with some bread for lunch and (vegan) cheese sandwiches with carrot and celery sticks for dinner.

grumpysquash2 · 21/02/2016 09:38

Hi everyone,
rivier and Ellen very nice that you're back for a chat :)

I'm weighing in at 10 stone 9 (67.7kg) which is a couple of pounds less than last week, and has been achieved by generally being very strict on the carbs and also by not eating breakfast any day.

Typical menu:
L (12.30pm): salad with chicken, ham, cheese or some combination. Apple.
snack (5ish): small handful of nuts, plum or satsuma
D: (~8pm): meat or fish and lots of green vegetables.

It's getting very boring Hmm

SC how was half term? How did you get on diet wise?

Waves to everyone else

Slimmingcrackers · 21/02/2016 13:11

marking my place again!

eltsihT · 21/02/2016 16:27

Well did manage 1 day without cheating but then had 3 days with lunches out.

62.5kg last week 62.2kg this week.

I think I am reaching a point where it's going to be hard to loose weight and I really need to focus on not cheating and remembering it's sometimes on an s day not all times.

However I went to my first yoga session ever yesterday and had a really good time, although an a bit achey today

Slimmingcrackers · 21/02/2016 18:46

Hi all! Hope everyone is ok! Sorry about that, was just about to post earlier and then got distracted by EU threads (yikes!) and dd coming home from school trip!

Hope those on half term holidays have enjoyed it!

Lovely to come on here after half term and see such lovely messages!

Reporting in today at 84.3 kg down from 86kg two Sundays ago.

Admittedly, some of that is due to the fact that I had gynae issues/procedure which made me nauseous. Then had back prob which meant I couldn't move for about 4 days. Then had IBS attack (sorry for TMI) which meant that I was eating very sparingly. But all of that really helped with readjusting to smaller portions if I'm honest!!

EltsihT congrats on your loss and first yoga session! Very sorry to hear about your mil. How is she now?

Grumpy congrats on your weight loss too (and strict meal regimen)! Thanks for asking about half term, how was yours?

I'm also cutting down on carbs. Hard because I love them! For me it is not so much the weight I put on when I eat them (well it is that too!) but it makes such a difference to how hungry I feel when I cut them out. If I eat eggs or meat and saladings and veg I just feel much less hungry for longer. If I have toast for breakfast, I get the shakes around 11 am!

Rivier congrats on getting back on the wagon! (Especially when on call which must be unpredictable and make it v diff to plan.)

V interesting about DagenZonderVlees. Funnily enough, we started "veggie Thursday" here because of an initiative (I think it was started in Ghent/Gent/Gand ??) three or four years ago. I think initiatives like this are a really good idea and can really encourage people to change their eating behaviours, or at least think about them! We now try to have a virtual veggie day on Tuesdays too!

Yay Ellen welcome back! 12 hr shifts sounds like killers! [Hides gin] 5lb down is fab!!

How's it going Breward? Still enjoying your dd's veggie cuisine? Sorry this is from way back down the thread but we had a weight loss chart for three years running in the office here. Every year without fail, everyone started with huge enthusiasm and bets were made, then interest waned and people dropped out, and then the chart mysteriously disappeared off the notice board altogether never to be mentioned again!! Grin

Salzundessig Julie Boozy Uphill Monty jolly and anyone else I have missed - and if you still happen to be lurking - how are you all doing?

Slimmingcrackers · 21/02/2016 19:07

Grumpy meant to say that half term was a bit strange but good thanks. Spent it decluttering a relative's flat (before my back went anyway). I wonder why it is so much easier to declutter other people's stuff than one's own?

eltsihT · 21/02/2016 21:25

Hey sc mil is no better, she was given 2-3 months a fortnight ago. We had been hoping to take the kids to see her today but she wasn't up for it.

She is at home at the minute but we are not sure for how long. DH is hoping to take her out for a Mother's Day lunch on the 6th but I am not sure how practical that would be.

On a plus not we discovered that we have no snacks in the house at all now, so bread and fruit are our only options unless we go and buy something.

Hope all your health issues are on the mend

EllenTheEgret · 22/02/2016 06:21

Very sorry to hear that your mil is so unwell, eltsihT, that must be really tough. Flowers

Well done on the run of good days Grumpy, and glad to see it has paid off!

I stayed off the gin on Tuesday, but it all when a bit wrong towards the end of the week. Sunday was better but now I'm too scared to weigh myself in case I've put it all back on Blush. Going to try for a super strict day today and then cross my fingers and weigh tomorrow.
