Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Happy birthday Coldethyl Grin.

ElectricalHoHoHoBanana · 08/01/2013 13:05

Day two of this woe. Feel bit light headed so just tested my wee for ketones and they are there. Just one + but stillSmile.... Also just done my blood sugar and its 3! Oh dear? Is that right? If my DD had a blood sugar of 3 I would be giving her biscuits as this is classed as a hypo! What should I do? Is this right?

thekitchenfairy · 08/01/2013 13:09

Hellooooo ladies, and happy birthday to everyone celebrating!!

You lot are marvinglous...
I have cucumber in my water, absolutely delish...
the braised cabbage was even better for lunch than it was last night...
DH is delighted that after a decade of WW cheese is allowed in the house again, I too am thrilled to be snacking on the odd baby bel Grin...
Pâté on celery with a few gherkins did wonders to take away the vile taste in my mouth that was somewhere between onions and fish...

Thanks all round

And maybe best of all... Instead of sabotaging the first workout of 2013 with cake I went for coffee and had a small decaf with cream... I really didn't want to be beaten with the big stick, or back to square one!!!! For me this is beyond a big deal, even on WW I would have found a way to have that cake.

Porkster · 08/01/2013 13:10

10 pounds in 7 days! That's amazing DharmaBumpkin.

Day 2 for me and I was a pound down. I have just made broccoli soup for lunch. I nearly put parsnips in, but remembered they're not allowed.

thekitchenfairy · 08/01/2013 13:14

Wow tickle and dharma that is brilliant, what inspirational losses!

MissNJE · 08/01/2013 13:19

I feel dreadful without the carbs. I have NO energy and spent most of the day in bed. Any tips?

PrincessSparkle86 · 08/01/2013 13:20

Ohhh BIWI im partial to a meatball so ill have a looksie at that!

Well done to you losers Wink excellent job!

cocolepew · 08/01/2013 13:24

Happy birthday!
Well done to you losers.

At college today with my class, I stared down a fresh baked chocolate scone.

Had a salad instead Grin

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 13:24

Tickle and Dharma that's brilliant! And bloody well done MRTickle!

All these amazing achievements, it's so inspiring.

thekitchenfairy If you went to WW around Truro, we've probably seen one another and not known it Grin Well done on not having cake

I've got to admit, this caught my eye in your post thekitchenfairy "delighted that after a decade of WW..." Because it bloody felt like a chore, didn't it? Going to the bastard classes, weighing in like some type of elephant with everyone else in the queue pretending not to look, getting the books out, writing it all down, buying the special foods... Going on holiday and blowing out, looking wearily at DH when you get back and sighing, "better get started on the bloody WW again..."

mumat39 · 08/01/2013 13:30

Happy birthday to everyone celebrating today!

And tickle and Dharma, OMG!!! That's brilliant! Well done! Really inspiring to read!

Xxx

Rooobs · 08/01/2013 13:32

Just checking in and well done to all you massive losers! Smile

Day 7 and I'm feeling like I'm losing the New Diet Euphoria, anyone know what I mean? I was 5 lbs down yesterday, but only 3 down today which is a bit annoying. I probably shouldn't weigh myself everyday though.

We also had a bad night with the baby and I'm on a deadline. I don't have time for an ill child Sad

Feeling generally stressed and tired and down.

Not sure what today's meals will be, but shopping has arrived so I know there's plenty of options.

Catch y'all later

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 13:36

Electric - as I said yesterday, you should talk to your GP about combining this WOE with your medication.

Your blood sugar level is too low, yes? (I don't know much about it, but isn't it supposed to be between 4 and 11?). You need to eat something I think - and it may be that you need a slightly higher level of carbs.

Can you tell me what you have been eating over the last couple of days?

I'm worried that your medication is doing such a good job of controlling things for you that when you have switched to low carbing, you are ending up with readings that are too low. What's your blood pressure like - are you monitoring this every day as well?

I'm very worried about you low carbing if it's going to be bad for you - and as I have said at the start of Bootcamp I am not a medic/doctor/nutritionist/dietician. I really don't want this WOE to impact further on your medical condition.

Mawbroon, shame about the celeriac crisps and chips. They always look so yummy in photos.

While your waiting for your book to arrive, have you looked at this site? It includes details of the introduction phase.

You probably already know about it but just in case..

mumat39 · 08/01/2013 13:40

Roobs, here's a big hug for you (((())))

Everything seems worse when you've had a rough night. Is there any chance you could have a nap or just chill in front of the tv for a bit to switch off for a short while?
Hope you're feeling a bit better soon. xxx

NewStartSameStory · 08/01/2013 13:41

Over 500posts by day 2 of boot camp?

Will attempt to catch up later. Only on a quick lunch break. Will pop in as much as I can but the lappy bios has died and need to borrow a computer to stick my head in.

Monday:
Breakfast (4:30am): Scrambled eggs
2nd breakfast (9:30am) :scrambled eggs
Snack: yohgurt
Tea: sausages and broccoli cheese.
2 coffees
Didn't drink enough water
2 hours training
Accidentally slept through lunch

Tuesday:
Breakfast: (5:30am): Scrambled eggs and a sausage
2nd Breakfast (9am): Scrambled eggs
snack: a sausage
Lunch: Salad with egg mayo
Water 2ltrs drunk
1hr 30mins training
Tea will be cottage pie.
Am on my third coffee.

And before BIWI shouts - the sausages are provided the little boost of extra carbs I find I need when training, in an easy to grab format.

I will weigh in on sunday mornings simply because there is no way i am going to remember to weigh in at 4am and then it is thursday before i have a reasonable start to the day. Starting at a long time since last seen of 71kg...

Will come back and read later.

TickleMyPickle · 08/01/2013 13:43

Thank you everyone :) I kind of want to shout it from the roof tops , i just hope we can keep it up.

I should add that we have had a large glass of wine each night too, so haven't totally been depriving ourselves.

I bought the pee on a stick things off Ebay too and found doing that daily has helped to see it change to dark purple and know we are deffo in ketosis :)

How do i go about getting added to the spreadsheet now it is already up and running please?

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 13:46

(((hugs))) Rooobs

I know. I totally get it. I have a 2yo but I remember when he was smaller and he'd get ill from nursery and I'd have to stay home and horribly, I know, I'd think "I have got 12 million things to do today, I really, really don't have time for you to be ill". I never meant it, but I felt like it sometimes. And people would say "Is there anyone who can take the baby for you?" and I'd think "No! We're all alone down here!" And feel rubbish. I used to smash in loads of carby stuff to help me cope as well.

Definately don't weigh yourself every day. I've failed a lot of diets in that way.

Rooobs · 08/01/2013 13:58

I will stick to weekly weigh ins from tomorrow (Week 2 for me).

No breaks for me, essay to finish then I'll be up in the night with the babe again no doubt. DP is being a saint in picking up the slack.

I just had a look at a BMI height weight chart thingy and I cannot BELIEVE how little I'm supposed to weigh. I would look like a skeleton! I'd be very very happy with 2 stones higher than the suggested.

Lastyearsmodel · 08/01/2013 14:12

Afternoon lovely funny ladies,

ScaredySquirrel am rofling about your low crabbing, 'tis bringing back memories of our week in Cromer. Grin

So, DP has found the scales (hurrah) but I didn't notice them until after my first half-pint of water this morning. Weigh in tomorrow then.

Was headachey and v tired last night but badly behaved children didn't send me to the biscuit tin as usually happens after school, so this WOE is having a real impact on my emotional/comfort eating. Can't deny I haven't fancied something sweet, but am able to resist - it's like I have willpower, very strange Smile.

Slept like a sleepy log and had lovely dream about Steve Redgrave - is this common side effect of bootcamp? Ah, that might have been my subconscious satisfying my craving for a little something sweet.

ScaredySquirrel · 08/01/2013 14:14

My weight yesterday was 168 and my target is 147 I think - please will someone add me to the spreadsheet?

Have now gone through the thread and feel inspired - have written a shopping list so I can be a bit more adventurous.

One of my downfalls will be water I suspect.

Lastyearsmodel · 08/01/2013 14:15

Rooobs Yes, even at my slimmest (size 12, 5'9") I was only just at the top end of the suggested weight range. I too would be very happy to be within sight of that again! Have always thought some people just weigh more for their size, iyswim. Denser, in the nicest possible way.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 14:16

Rooobs - sorry you're having a tough time. Babies can be little buggers, can't they? Mind you they don't necessarily improve Grin

OP posts:
Doshusallie · 08/01/2013 14:22

Tickle - i don't use them but I think I read that dark pink on ketostix means you are not drinking enough water?

In a change from the previously published plan (I know, STOP PRESS!!!! Grin) lunch was a 3 egg mushroom omelette with coleslaw (Tescos basics one is 3.5g) Was going to have a tuna salad at the work canteen but could not stand the office a moment longer and am now mn'ing working at home.

GrandmaHasTheMoozles · 08/01/2013 14:23

Oh no - what have I done Sad

Day two for me and I am suffering from carb flu big time. I have a headache and carb cravings.

And I relented.

I just ate 3/4 of a muller rice desert we had in the fridge - so probably about 35g of carbs in that.

I guess this is has just set back the start of ketosis.

I feel really light headed now.
