Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

How long until this taste goes? I am brushing my teeth about 4 times a day.. Eeek, how many carbs are in toothpaste? (obsessive!)

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 09:18

Not long I don't think dangerousmouse, a few days from what others have said.

I'm still using chewing gum. I can't walk around with shit breath. Blush

DangerousMouse · 08/01/2013 09:27

Yesterday was going well then my period arrived and it went downhill from there unfortunately. Was 2 weeks late and have been having awful cramps and pains. Pmt has been barely noticeable for last few months on previous bootcamp so I wonder if Xmas/new year food and drink made this one so bad.

Ended up going to bed with a huge bag of chocolate buttons and a hot water bottle.

On bright side tho this morning I'm 2lbs lighter (bad water retention with all the sugar etc over Xmas) and aiming to be strict today. Breakfast was 3 eggs scrambled in a shed load of butter, 2 cups of tea with cream and a litre of water.

I'm so grateful for the support this thread offers so a big thank you to all involved.

EwanHoozami · 08/01/2013 09:44

ATTN fishcake fans (a few people PM'd me for the recipe)

Stick to cauliflower. I got all fancypants last night and tried substituting celeriac mash.

Ended up eating something similar to sardine blancmange. Unpleasant.

GuyMartinsSideburns · 08/01/2013 09:48

Morning Smile

Well Im having a Confused day already and its not even 10am! Dh and I are talking about trying for a 3rd, I can see both sides of the arguement and am at present stuck in the middle. This isnt related to this thread at all I know, however its whizzing round my head and I wanted to get it down. We have a ds nearly 7, and a dd nearly 5. I dont know if Ive left it too long?

Anyway - Ive had scrambled eggs and Im having my 2nd coffee (I'll wish later Id saved it) and my heads up my arse. Last night I dreamt about a leopard print babygrow and hat I glanced at in town on sat Blush

Bloody hell

Have a great day everyone Smile

GuyMartinsSideburns · 08/01/2013 09:48

arf @ 'sardine blancmange' Grin Thats put a smile on my face

Lavenderhoney · 08/01/2013 09:50

Still dreadful headache all night and all day so far. It's like a migraine. And I am so tired- I am never tired normally but I was swimming with dd and felt so exhausted I had to get out. Is this normal? I felt a tiny bit better after an olive and a glass of water but soon felt bad again.

Plan for today-

B- fried egg, cabbage in butter with mushrooms ( leftovers)
L- cherry toms, sardines from a can, feta cheese and olives.
D- courgettes pasta with steak.

Snacks- Brie, olives.

And just only water again all day today:)

GuyMartinsSideburns · 08/01/2013 09:53

Lavender - I felt like that for a couple of days - couldve spent the last couple of days in bed, easily! Today I feel so much better. Stick at it and I reckon you'll be feeling awesome soon. I also didnt notice much loss (been doing this a week) until those nasty symptoms stopped, as today when I weighed Im 2lbs down.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 10:09

Ginot - I've answered your question on the new question thread

Thank you BigStick Will check it out now!

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 10:18

here's an interesting blog post about carb flu

If you're feeling really grotty - make sure you're getting plenty of sodium. Drinking lots of water 'washes' it out of our bodies, so add salt to veg when you're cooking and on to your food when you're eating it. Potassium and magnesium are also things that you need. Salmon and avocados are good sources of potassium and spinach is a good source of magnesium.

Keep drinking the water, but make sure that you also eat plenty of fat.

If you have a headache, take some paracetamol (not ibuprofen/aspirin as these types of drugs can also impede weight loss), and if you get the opportunity, go to bed for a quick kip.

But remember - this too shall pass! It will only affect you for 1-2 days.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 10:21

skandi1 - I often get that gurgling when I go back to strict LCing. No idea why, but I always assume it's a good sign!

OP posts:
EwanHoozami · 08/01/2013 10:26

I find it hard to add much salt to my own food - govt conditioning, I suppose. Then I was 'missing' the extra sodium from the processed food I'd previously been eating. I therefore staved off carb flu by crunching through lots of pork scratchings Grin

GinotPrigio · 08/01/2013 10:27

My ketostix arrived but sadly I don't appear to be in ketosis :( Will test again in a few days

EwanHoozami · 08/01/2013 10:27

BIWI I'd entirely forgotten about the ibuprofen thing - thanks for the reminder!

BlackAffronted · 08/01/2013 10:35

guy My dds were 6 and 8 when my DS was born, he totally completed our family even though I was unsure at first. Really wouldnt be without him :)

lavander I felt tired like you the first time I LC'd, it went away after the first week and then I just felt energised

Going to have crayfish tails for lunch, they are cheap in Lidl just now. Will make a homemade cocktail sauce (mayo with the teensiest bit of tom ketchuo and a sprinkle of lemon juice) and have them with avocado and baby leaf salad.

mumat39 · 08/01/2013 10:40

That's interesting BIWI. I have actually been really enjoying salty stuff. Last night when I was eating, I seemed to need more salt as I couldn't really taste anything. That must have been why.

Tbh, I was surprised to find I was in ketosis already. I had a bit of a headache last night, but I haven't really had any carb flu symptoms yet or the metallic mouth. I'm sure they'll hit with a vengeance any minute now that I've said that. Hmm

mawbroon · 08/01/2013 10:40

I have no idea if I am in ketosis or not, but I am not LCing for weight loss so I am assuming it doesn't matter. I am eating quite big portions of allowed veg and there's prob enough carbs in there to stop me going into ketosis.

I had eggs florentine this morning and walked ds1 to school. No mean feat as it's 1.3miles uphill through a muddy forest and I had 12kg ds2 strapped to my back.

I am going to get a pan for deep frying and try some vegetable crisps soon.

I watched the video from the link away at the beginning of the thread. I really need to cut down on carbs for the dc, but don't think dh will be pleased and think the kids will be even less pleased.

TomHardysPinky · 08/01/2013 10:48

Day 1 yesterday,

had B- scrambled eggs in butter
L- home made soup from veg list and a babybel
D- chicken and salad with dressing and mayo.

Is that OK?

My head is banging.

The worst part for me is the pepsi max come down, im addicted :(

Doshusallie · 08/01/2013 11:04

Morning all.

In office today which is a real shock to the system I can tell you.

However I am hoping it will help, as it will stop me popping to the kitchen for a little snack every 5 bloody minutes. I am 2 pounds up this morning Shock, so much for being in bloody maintenance, that will teach me to say that. Put me in such a bad mood.

Had lidl greek yog for breakfast, and will have a tuna salad for lunch.

I think the problem is the nuts and Peanut Butter I am still eating, and I am eating more of them in the evening as I am not boozing. Depressingly, this shows me that I can not ever deviate from strict low carb to stay at the weight I want. Which either means I am naturally supposed to be slightly heavier than my ideal weight of 9 1/2, or ....well I'm not sure!!

Still have cold, got that headache behind the nose and eyes and fuggy feeling and am working an attractive "mouth open" look today due to blocked nose.

So it cheered me up to read about Ewan's chorizo comment, thanks! Grin

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 11:08

TomHardysPinky - it's a caffeine withdrawal then - IME that was a lot worse than any carb flu!

mawbroon - probably best to do it gradually by introducing new meals so that the rest of the family doesn't notice that you're not having pasta/potatoes/rice/sugar as often!

mumat39 - your headache = carb withdrawal - you may not get anything more than this; everyone varies

Morning, late breakfast today due to bloody virgin media internet connection issues.

Scrambled egg with cheese and ham for breakfast, cooked in butter.

Only on my first litre though!
