Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Jacaqueen. Not too keen on egg yolk and I have high cholesterol so have been told to avoid egg yolk if I am to gorge on egg for LCing.

It's convenient too. You can buy fresh liquid egg white in cartons. It's super quick to pour out and make an omelette with.

I am glad my avocado frenzy hasn't completely ruined it all. I am
Sticking to one avo at the time from now on!

skandi1 · 07/01/2013 19:41

Oh and BIWI. Thank you.

I did both egg white omelettes with butter. And the lunch one had a whole leek and cheese in it too.

Just don't like yolk. If I am served fried egg I eat around the yolk and just eat the white instead.

Oh well I am having prawn curry tomorrow night. And I think a chorizo omelette for lunch. Hope that is enough fat otherwise I can easily supplement it with ham and cheese as snacks.

I am drinking ok. I am half a glass of my daily 3l target just now plus I have had 4 cups of green tea. Sloooosh.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 19:43

Eating fat doesn't make you fat.
Eating cholesterol doesn't give you high cholesterol.

But if you don't like the yolks, fair enough!

Bullet - welcome! That coconut milk sounds fine.

Ilovemyteddy · 07/01/2013 19:45

Skandi I'm not a medical expert but I have been LCing for almost a year now and have eaten millions of eggs and my cholesterol has been checked twice and is fine. You may want to seek medical advice before eating yolks but I haven't had a problem with them.

Electric I have had very high blood pressure since my early 20s (am 53) and it is now normal so hopefully LCing will do the same for you.

Eldritch sending you unmumsnetty ((hugs)).

Ilovemyteddy · 07/01/2013 19:46

Oh, you don't like yolks. Ignore what I just posted Grin

HugAndRoll · 07/01/2013 19:48

I lost you all for a while!

Well, self indulgent whine:

Please kick me up the ass. Last week low carb gave me the runs so instead of being sensible and realising it was just my body adjusting I decided I couldn't do it. I've eaten carbs every day since (including today) until I had a long hard talk with myself and asked what the fuck I was playing at. My sugar addiction is huge and I am going to need support which I know is going to be annoying.

I really need to do this though but for the love of god how to I stick to the first couple of weeks? I'm doing my own and likely your head in.

Yddraigoldragon · 07/01/2013 19:49

I can remember looking at prepacked egg when LC'ing previously - and have never eaten restaurant scrambled egg since as the pack I looked at had 'stuff' added to eke out the egg..
Skandi1 completely understand about not liking yolk, but it would be worth checking that the pack is just egg.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 19:55

HugAndRoll - make sure you have planned out your meals, and make sure you have planned to cook lovely, yummy food. Lots of posts already today of gorgeous-sounding meals people have had.

You really only need to get through the first 2-3 days of carb withdrawal, and then you will find it much easier, honestly!

We will all be here, giving you support and encouragement.

And you won't be annoying! Many people here are very new to low carbing and everyone will have questions and concerns; that's the point of the chat thread (and the new 'questions' thread).

Ultimately - here comes the kick up the ass - we can't do it for you. You have to do it. You have to decide if you're really committed, and then make sure it happens.

I've just realise, there are 177 of us on the spreadsheet. That means that if we all lose just one pound this week, that will be the equivalent of losing one Mumsnetter!

Hi all!

Have added my weight to the marvellous spreadsheet.

I didn't weigh today but have lost 6 lbs - now on day 12 I think.

I feel amazing - not hungry.

AND

I have the secret of MICROWAVE PARMESAN CRISPS
Grin

helpingout · 07/01/2013 20:02

I've added myself to the spreadsheet, hope that's ok!

Bacon for breakfast, prawn salad for lunch, bacon/green bean/red onion omelette for tea. Need to swot up on recipes and buy some basics tomorrow.

skandi1 · 07/01/2013 20:02

I have checked the egg white and its this: www.twochicks.co.uk/

And it doesn't have any nasties from what I could determine.

My high cholesterol seems a mystery as after lots of blood tests and following advice and medication, it has no obvious cause and nothing is shifting it down wards.

So on the basis I was told that eggs as in the yolk part was the devil for cholesterol and I don't like it much, I have for a long time made all my omelettes with egg. White.

But as I am terrified of BIWI and her big stick, I will try whole egg and see how I do. Smile

OTTMummA · 07/01/2013 20:03

Ahem,, i may have bought another cabbage today Grin I could eat that all day Blush
I feel like i have eaten too much, so i will list and then someone can put me straight.
B: 2 egg omlette with butter and sprinkle of cheddar
L: Chicken mayo salad with iceburg lettuce and 2 inc piece of peeled cucumber
D: braised cabbage leftovers and chicken with a little mustard (tiny teaspoon)
I was still hungry and feeling light headed so had 3 eggs fried and mushrooms in butter, with a small coffee and dash of cream.
I haven't managed 4.5lts of water, infact i have managed the grand total of 6 glasses Blush i am not a big water drinker massiveunderstatement

JustasmallGless · 07/01/2013 20:03

Evening losers

Well done everyone on day 1 (or 3,4?5 or 6 depending on where you are up to) of the rest of your LC lives!

How are you feeling? However rubbish you feel I promise by the end of the week you will feel brill with loads of energy and not as hungry once your body starts to get rid of carbs and fat burn

B- ham and Philly cheese rolls
L salad with bit of leftover ham from brekkie and cheese coleslaw
Da chicken filled with Boursin wrapped prosciutto and braised cabbage

I'm stuffed peeps

Toomuch - loving the new name btw (although only Dosh is dry In Jan!)

Jacaqueen · 07/01/2013 20:04

HugAndRoll plan you menu for the fist 3-4 days. Plan to eat something high fat and delicious every couple of hours. Drink lots of water and get as much rest as you can. Paracetamol can be used for headaches and general aches and pains.

After a few days will you will be fine. Infact you will be better than fine.

You can do it.

Ilovemyteddy · 07/01/2013 20:07

Hugandroll every time you fall off the wagon you have to do the first two weeks again, complete with carb-flu etc. So you would be kinder to yourself just to get it over with this week. Once you get past the poo-ing etc you will feel fucking GREAT. Trust me.

Honestly if I can do it, anyone can. It is SO worth those first two weeks.

JustasmallGless · 07/01/2013 20:07

OTTMumma
Instead of glasses of water have you tried a sports cap bottle? I buy one at beginning of week and refill.
There is something scientific which I have read but can't bloody find now which explains why you can drink more via bottke

helpingout · 07/01/2013 20:07

I've added myself to the spreadsheet, hope that's ok!

Bacon for breakfast, prawn salad for lunch, bacon/green bean/red onion omelette for tea. Need to swot up on recipes and buy some basics tomorrow.

BlackAffronted · 07/01/2013 20:10

Is SoleSource still with us?

BlackAffronted · 07/01/2013 20:12

So, how many of us had braised cabbage today? Grin

GinotPrigio · 07/01/2013 20:13

ScillyCow - Recipe for those parmesan crisps please? I'm desperately craving something sweet after dinner but these might do the trick instead!

Carrotcakeisace · 07/01/2013 20:18

Ok, so I couldn't weigh this morning due to a flat battery situation but even taking into account the litres of water I've drunk today 230.5lbs is disgraceful and I have totally obliterated all the good work I did last year. I will be good from now on

B- 2 eggs scrambled with butter
L- cauli soup from the recipie thread
D- roast pork stir fry

I have also has a couple of teas with milk

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 20:19

I just had chicken thighs fried in butter and finished in the oven then rolled in pesto. Had peas and green beans on the side.

Fried off some streaky bacon in butter for breakfast tomorrow and it's sitting deliciously in the fridge.

Water to drink, even though DH had a big glass of diet coke.

Feeling a bit chubby, but I just started my period a few hours ago, so that won't help I guess.

It's hard to stop equating the fat in my body with the fat in butter.

OTTMummA · 07/01/2013 20:22

oooohh, Will have to try the sports bottle, DD keeps lunging for my drinks at the moment so a bottle makes sense tbh.

I have had another 2 glasses, but doubt i will manage the whole 4.5 lts today, but will aim for it tomorrow.
