Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

For me:

No breakfast (I'm doing a little bit of intermittent fasting)
Lunch - roast belly pork with salad/vinaigrette dressing
Dinner - pan-fried cod fillet on a bed of spinach (in garlic butter)

Have restricted myself to 2 cups of coffee today, and have drunk 3 litres of water so far.

I am totally committed and know I need to get through the carb flu.

Tomorrow I'm having Greek yogurt for breakfast, salad with full fat French dressing and ham for lunch and either bacon and eggs or an omelette for dinner.

Other than boiled eggs what are good snacks as can't have fruit for 2 weeks and can I eat Brie?

JustasmallGless · 07/01/2013 20:28

Slatternly- I totally get what you are saying. How can eating fat to make me fatter? Read about the science bit and trust in it. All of us can't be wrong.

My sil did Lighter life and like others put most of her weight back on. Eating meal replacement shakes and bars then one low cal/low carb meal in the evening just isn't FUN

Who is really enjoying food for the first time in a long time? The taste of real food instead of processed crap ( forgets about the babybel i ate today Blush)

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 20:29

HugAndRoll

I'm glad!

You'll get through it fine - you know what to expect. Keep drinking plenty of water, keep your fat levels up and make sure you're getting enough sodium and potassium. Salt is good on this WOE, especially if you're drinking lots of water. And salmon/avocadoes are good sources of potassium.

Some snack suggestions on the question thread

Yes, you can snack on Brie - or any other cheese.

Your menu tomorrow sounds perfect!

Similar advice to you. If you're thirsty despite drinking lots, you also need to make sure you're getting sodium and potassium.

Low-carb cottage pie for dinner.

However, forgive me BIWI for I have sinned. I was in a foul mood after work (first day back after mat leave, office move in my absence and they didn't sodding allocate me a desk, the f*ckers, so I'm going to have to sit somewhere random and not with my lovely chatty team members. Also there was bugger all to do all day) so I have eaten some berries and cream. I also had a couple of cups of tea with semi-skimmed milk at work out of sheer boredom.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 20:38

Well, it comes to something when you apologise for eating fruit Grin

No worries. Tomorrow is another day and all that. But what a horrible return to work Sad Angry

Troy - you will start to feel better. I'm a few days in and feel magnificent. Dh started properly yesterday and feels fatigued and thirsty. Oh, and I no longer have the funny taste in my mouth.

HugandRoll, we baked a load of chicken thighs and legs and are good to have with salad or as a tasty snack.

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 20:41

WOW, 177 on spreadsheet, thats amazingGrin

skandi1 · 07/01/2013 20:41

This is the mayo with only 0.3g of carb per 100g: www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Sussex-Valley-Classic-Mayonnaise/40396011

Got it with my shop today and its lovely. Much nicer than Hellmans.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/01/2013 20:43

I have done lots of lc shopping and cooking today - I am very prepared for the week ahead.

Also bought and ate some pickled cucumbers. Mmmmmm. Only 2.8g per 100g so suitable for bootcamp.

HugAndRoll · 07/01/2013 20:43

Hooray for Brie! That's my snack sorted if needed.

tooimmature I returned from mat leave last week, not the nicest thing at the best of times. Sounds like a horrible return though and I hope they seat you with your team soon.

BIWI I really appreciate the kick up the ass, thank you :)

Hi all

Could someone add me to the spreadsheet as I couldn't see my name? My weight is 170lb :-(

Today I've had
B: ham and cheese
L: ham and salami salad
D: pulled pork, coleslaw and rocket

Feeling very full and roasting chicken thighs and boiling eggs so snacks are easy to hand!

Livelongandprosper · 07/01/2013 21:01

It's my first week in a new job, I have not drunk enough water during the day because I couldn't keep disappearing off to the toilet in the middle of the training sessions. I am making up for it now.

Hope everyone had a good first day.

TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 07/01/2013 21:02

I was having a bit of a moment - I hadn't missed carbs or sweet stuff till now.... today I had a faint metallic taste in mouth - I was very excited about it - could it be Kerwotsit?

But tonight my OH made the kids pancakes with lemon and sugar Sad the smell was overwhelmingly gorgeous... I womanfully resisted and made some of the cheese scones (with ground almond, feta and grated cheddar) which I have slathered in butter. They are surprisingly nice and I'm no longer having terrible sweet tooth cravings, thank god!

TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 07/01/2013 21:04

PS dcat had the crumbs of the scones and he too found them surprisingly nice...

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2013 21:07

slatternly and christmasjubilee both your weights are added.

kandinskysgirl if someone else doesn't add ou before, I'll add ou tomorrow night when I'm back on laptop, I can update weights on iPad, but not add in the right place!

Ruprekt · 07/01/2013 21:09

I feel great!

B - scram eggs, bacon and mushroom

L - pigs in blankets and a fab soup I made with Broccoli and Gorgonzola

D - Chicken in cream and mushroom sauce with asparagus and spinach

I snacked on pork scratchings which felt so naughty but were delicious!

DH is loving it too because the food tastes good.

Lots of water and a peppermint tea before bed.

hurricanewyn · 07/01/2013 21:12

Evening all

I have time to post properly now. I hope everyone's going ok & those who are struggling feel better soon. Foodwise, I've had a good, if not very exciting, day:

B None, had to go to the supermarket for lunch things so no time for breakfast
L Salad with cured meat, cheese and mayo
D Chicken, bacon & sausage in a cream & cheese sauce

Biwi - it was about 11 when I weighed but by that stage I still hadn't eaten or drank anything. Not great, I know, but I'll make sure I drink more tomorrow.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 07/01/2013 21:18

Very pleased about the coconut milk! I haven't added myself to the spreadsheet yet, I am hopefully going to the gym tomorrow after my job interview (eek!) so will weigh myself then Sad it's gonna be baaaaad!
ScillyCow - I wonder if I know you? I'm related to half of St. Marys..... Grin

ChristmasJubilee · 07/01/2013 21:26
