Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Slatternly Slow Braised Creamy Cabbage recipe - it was on one of the other threads I think so thought I'd give it a whirl.

My lot love the garlic chicken Maggi things - I looked on the back and it was 5.2g carbs to 130g chicken fillet but I put six of them in there instead of four so crosses fingers it might be ok.

I hope. Grin

NellVarnish · 07/01/2013 17:20

Thanks BigStickGuru, I trust you implicitly - am following you on twitter now too (initials SS) not stalking, honest!. Just in case you put any pearls of wisdom on there too. Grin

Hohoho, I bet I am more barrel like than you! I ate a small child's worth of Quality Street over the hols. Don't worry, we are all in this together. Smile

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 17:27

Now there's an idea for a name change ...!

(I'm no guru though. Just a few years down the line in terms of low carbing)

Do it. Smile

Evening all! Can't believe how huge this thread is already.

Day 6 for me and I'm feeling much better - or would be if I hadn't gone back to work today :( Plus I did the Shred and wow am I unfit.

I have questions but will put them in the proper place. How everyone's well, it all sounds very positive.

hurricanewyn · 07/01/2013 17:36

Evening all. Have updated the spreadsheet, but I had to weigh in my clothes & shoes, so I'm probably a bit lighter than I weighed.

I'll be weighing thisxway for 6 weeks, so it'll still be a good indicator of loss.

Chicken omlette for dinner!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 17:38

Yep, coldethyl, that sounds like you're heading into ketosis! Keep your fat levels up, and make sure you're eating salt on your food. The salmon will help you as it has lots potassium in it.

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2013 17:45

Hellooooooo! I am here, marking my place. Relieved to be back on the low carb wagon tbh!

cocolepew · 07/01/2013 17:48

Evening all Smile. Not the most auspicious start to my first proper week LCing. I didn't get to sleep until 2.30, this has been a problem for a few weeks now, then slept in! I'd set my alarm wrong Blush. Thankfully it was only half an hour but there wasn't time to do my fry up. I threw some eggs in the microwave but over cooked them Hmm.

Thankfully I had made a stirfry yesterday for lunch. Had a salmon fillet smeared in butter and cooked in the oven in foil for tea. With M&S cauliflower cheese, because I'm too lazy to do it myself Grin.I wasn't particularly hungry but thought it best to eat now instead of getting the munchies later.

Sorry slatternlymother it was me that told you to eat the blueberries, I thought you were only cutting out sugar, not joining us Grin.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 17:49

hurricane - did you weigh yourself before you'd eaten/drunk anything and after you'd gone to the loo?!

thenightsky · 07/01/2013 17:52

Ah here you all are!

thenightsky · 07/01/2013 17:57

I think I've added myself to the spreadsheet, but I'm such a clutz with things like that I don't know how it works really.

I'll stick with chatting and keeping my own records as I'm terrified of messing it up.

Doshusallie · 07/01/2013 17:58

Hi all.

Bloody hell. I work FT too, but that's going to have to go to keep up with this.

Welcome Eletricalbanana, this will work for you I promise.

High fives Platoon.

Vanilla Essence with Greek yoghurt for brekkie? (for whoever asked)

Anewdisposition - how lovely that you sister had that reaction. Good for you. Grin

Great idea to have a separate thread for questions.

My Dad watched that video - he agreed with all of it, and TBH follows quite a low carb eating plan anyway.

Another one here who knows someone who lost a pile of weight on Lighter Life and piled it all on again and then some.

I am not a good cook either, for whoever said we were all accomplished cooks! Dh does most of it, but I do cook alot more now than I used to. I tend to eat straight from the fridge, so I need to make sure the right stuff is in it.

Snacks today have been a few spoons of greek yog from Lidl as I luuuuurve it, and some peanut butter.

Tea is left over roast pork and veggies.

GinotPrigio · 07/01/2013 18:08

Great to have so many people starting today. Slowly making my way through all the post. That braised cabbage receipe looks amazing. can't wait to give it a go.

It's Day 6 for me and so far so good. I am really not missing bread / potatoes / pasta / biscuits. I am still craving chocolate but I think that's one craving that will never go away!

Food today was:
B: 3 boiled eggs with butter
L: Prawn cocktail and leftover cauliflower cheese from last night
S: Chicken pieces
D: Pork fillet stuffed with blue cheese, and pak choi fried in garlic butter

Nervous and excited about my 7 day weigh in tomorrow. 6 lbs is my target but 7lbs would be incredible.

Yama · 07/01/2013 18:08

Right, that's me home from work and had dinner. Feeling great and have felt amazing all day (I did light Bootcamp from last Wed).

B - Scrambled eggs with butter and cheese
L - Salad with chicken thigh and mature cheddar
S - Greek yoghurt, 2 x cheese cracker
D - Bol with cauliflower rice and some cucumber and cheddar

Have had 3 pints of water so far, 2 cups of tea and a coffee. I only take the faintest splashes of milk.

Now to catch with how everyone has been fairing.

Doshusallie · 07/01/2013 18:16

Yama - your food looks great i ould just say that you are having cheese with every meal.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 18:17

Yama - just keep an eye on the dairy - you're eating quite a lot. Hopefully it won't be a problem, but it's something that can impede your weight loss.

Just marking my place. On train home so will post weight etc once on pc at home.

caramelwaffle · 07/01/2013 18:22

Checking in.

Yama · 07/01/2013 18:24

Thanks guys, I'll go without tomorrow. Good to have things pointed out. You are right BIWI about writing down everything you eat - it really helps.

NoelHeadbands · 07/01/2013 18:28

Evening all (thanks for the wise words earlier BIWI. Panic over Wink)

B- sausage, fried egg, slice of bacon with added butter
L- chicken wings coated in Parmesan and sesame seeds with salad and mayo
T- chilli (minus the kiddly beans) in iceberg wraps

ShebaQueen · 07/01/2013 18:36

Evening all, I have a splitting headache, but am glugging water like mad.

Haven't found today too difficult but have missed my tea with milk, been drinking green tea instead.

Boiled eggs for breakfast
Tuna mayonnaire with salad for lunch
Chicken breast with mozzarella, mushrooms and spinach for dinner

Great to see everyone so motivated!

Lifeisontheup · 07/01/2013 18:37

Disaster of a day in some ways, went to see my sister who knew I was on LC. We'd normally have a toasted sandwich so she's made some soup instead which was split pea soup.Sad I had to eat it as she's made it specially, hadn't the heart to tell her it's not LC, she'd also made some oat cookies specially (think she may have confused low GI with LC. Still on the bright side I've drunk 3L of water.
Dinner is :
Pork chop, creamy braised cabbage, mushrooms fried in butter with leeks and creamed spinach so looking forward to that.

Wonder if the shops will run out of cabbage as we all seem to be having the creamy braised cabbage.Smile a sort of bootcamp Delia effect?
