Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Question thread

anew wow! Well done! That is a compliment indeed Smile

Thanks BIWI I might add it to my watch list so I don't lose it later on.

Wilding · 07/01/2013 16:23

Thanks biwi - I shall re-post!

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 16:27

Thinking about getting a veg and meat box next week actually. Don't really have to worry about getting fruit (and you know what? It's liberating. It really is. Every bloody week I trail round the supermarket trying to vary my fruit as much as I do my veg... God it's hard. And if you go online to shop, you might as well put a sign up saying 'Give me all the bruised fruit!' I'll get a couple of apples for DS and some blueberries for DH and that's it.)

They say you can say you don't want stuff in there. Shall I ask they double up my kale and swede etc and don't give me potatoes and carrots or squash? I can get DS a couple potatoes for his share of the soup or curry seperately, can't I? Is that reasonable?

JustasmallGless · 07/01/2013 16:27

I work for one day and 250 posts later!!
Will try and catch up
Marking place

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 16:28

Sorry; that's not a question quesion I just posted, it's an opinion thing and so not worthy of the proper question thread Blush

anewdispensation · 07/01/2013 16:28

Thanks Slatternly. More than the 7lbs lost in 6 days, I love the general sense of well being. It is so nice being on here and for everyone being supportive. I just want to say to all others on day 1, stick it out. I felt like I was dying for the first 3 days as I was a proper sugar fiend but on the 4th day I started feeling better and now I am very ok and do not think of food very much. Before this WOE, I had never had swede and celeriac and now I think they are brilliant. Just keep going!!

BlackAffronted · 07/01/2013 16:36

Whats your take on protein shakes for breakfast Biwi? I have a low carb whey protein powder (unflavoured) which woudl be 1.5 carbs per shake, I was going to add water and either cream or alpro to it, and a dollop of coconut oil because I struggle to make/eat breakfast and it would be ideal for me. Is it a no-no in bootcamp?

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:36

It's lovely when people notice and comment, isn't it? I found that because I lost weight very slowly, I didn't notice it myself until very recently, because I seemed to lose the weight proportionately. Looking in the mirror, to me, I looked just the same - it was only the fit of my clothes that told me (keep telling me - I still can't believe it!) that I had lost so much.

BlackAffronted - I've copied your question and answered it on the new, shiny question thread

Wow another thread, fab idea thoughSmile

JustasmallGless love the NC

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:42

I don't really like the idea of them, but that's because personally I prefer real food, and I assume (which may be a massive assumption on my part because I know nothing about them) that they are full of artificial ingredients, which we're trying to avoid.

But if it makes breakfast easier, then I suppose they could be helpful. [not convinced face] Grin

What a fast moving thread!

I have picked at some pigs in blankets I got for 50p from M&S over xmas and they were low carb.

So

B- 2 eggs, bacon and mushrooms
L- snacked on pigs in blankets and pork scratchings
D- Chicken in creamy mushroom sauce, asparagus and spinach

And shed loads water!!

BlackAffronted · 07/01/2013 16:53

Here is the powder I was going to use, but have just seen that it contains sweeteners :( here

BlackAffronted · 07/01/2013 16:53

Might keep it for the most difficult mornings, and try to eat properly as many mornings as I can.

NellVarnish · 07/01/2013 16:56

I'm just cooking slow braised cabbage and chicken fillets with leeks for tea. Adding butter and cream and slightly freaking out at putting it all in!

I'm either going to love this diet and be a skinnymalinkylonglegs or the side of a house. Grin

Today:

B: total full fat yog 1/2 pot
L: two hastily scrambled eggs with buttered mushrooms
D: chicken fillet (with the Maggi packet thing), leeks and braised cabbage

Is that ok do you think? Have had 1 1/2 ltrs water - not enough but am working on it.

ElectricalHoHoHoBanana · 07/01/2013 16:58

i have joined you and have put my details in.....

today is my first day with no carbs...i havent had any now for nearly 24 hours and i feel "funny"....i am usually a bread munching, chocolate gobbling, 3 sugars in my tea slurping fool.

i am 45 this year and i have hit menopause....and its shows. Gone is the voluptuous size 12-14 marilyn monroe-esque coke bottle figure to be replaced by

a barrel

a short fat hairy barrel

i am 14st1.6lb and 5ft4"

shit shit shit. i havent been this heavy since i had DD1 25 years ago when even though she was 4.5lb i managed to go from 8st to 14st....i had severe water retention/pre eclampsia/eclampsia and kidney failure. i pissed my way back to 8 st in less than 4 months! oh happy days when i snapped back after all that weight gain.

i put on again with DD2 (20) but not as bad. I have spent the last 20 years moaning about wanting to rid myself of the baby fat...

I need to loose weight.....i have v high BP (210/130!- but now on meds so much better) i have familial hypercholesterolaemia and an underactive thyroid. I am also on meds for "restlesslegs". and i am a brittle asthmatic.

i think i am on the edge of type 2 diabetes (its rife in my family)

my right ankle is fucked....i hobble like an old lady and my knees hurt all the time. I snore so badly my OH wakes up and wakes me up,,,,i have a feeling i stop breathing too.

i am a size 16 bottom and a size 12-14 top. i have small boobs so the size is all fat IYKWIM.

thankyou for reading this....it has felt cathartic to write it down.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 16:58

Ooooh nell that sounds lovely. I use the Maggi things too, are they ok?

ElectricalHoHoHoBanana · 07/01/2013 17:00

oh and today i have had

2 boiled eggs

a chunk of salmon left over from last night with a large salad

a piece of fillet steak, mushrooms, carrots and broccoli

and lots of tea with NO FUCKING SUGAR IN>>>>>>>arrrghhhhhh

halfthesize · 07/01/2013 17:02

Welcome ElectricalHoHoHoBanana

Food today has been

B-Bacon and eggs
L-burger and salad
D-slow roasted pork in creamy sauce with green beans
sloshing and running to the loo lots as on 7th pint of waterWink

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 17:03

ElectricalHoHoHoBanana - welcome! I notice that you are on medication for your blood pressure (not surprising, given the numbers Grin). You should talk to your gp about doing low carb, as this WOE does help to lower blood pressure - so the levels of meds you are on will need to be monitored.

OP posts:
halfthesize · 07/01/2013 17:04

After a while Elec you wont miss the sugar.Smile

NellVarnish · 07/01/2013 17:08

Mmm just tasted the cabbage - divine. got another bottle of water on the go as I'm making tea.

Thank you for putting me on the Spreadsheet of Marvellousness Willie - I am rubbish at spreadsheets. Smile

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 17:11

Nell - you need to trust us on the fat front. It does work, honestly! Just keep an eye on the amount of dairy you're having, as that can cause problems for some people.

OP posts:
ElectricalHoHoHoBanana · 07/01/2013 17:15

oh god....you have all made me cry-a bit.

i hate my body so much (DH says i am still foxy but hell fire he does need new glasses)

the thing is all i can think of is bread!!!!!!

i will keep an eye on my BP - i am an ex nurse and have my own monitor here, GP is great and so is practice nurse so between us all we should get it controlled.

YAY....sorry...excited and emotional tonight
