Mounjaro and alcohol

BasketofBlue · 23/04/2026 18:04

This is the beginning of my third week and Mounjaro. I’ve lost5lb sofar which I’m happy with. Appetite suppression has been good and it’s taken away the Urge to snack. However I had hoped it would curb the craving for alcohol too as I’ve read this is common, but that’s not happened so far.

I’m still on 2.5 so has anyone experienced lack of interest in alcohol as the doses go up?

It had absolutely no effect on my alcohol consumption and I’m on the maximum dose! In fact I’ve probably drunk more when on it.

Doggymummar · 23/04/2026 18:07

Yeah I can't drink on it, makes me sick, but I don't want to either

Twasasurprise · 23/04/2026 18:28

A slight reduction in alcohol for me initially, but pretty much drinking the same (probably too much) as before MJ.

Backawayfromthesausage · 23/04/2026 18:53

I can drink easily and could easily eat a lot too, but I don’t wish to, so don’t. So for me it’s not suppression as in I couldn’t, never has been it’s more suppression as in I don’t fancy it and can easily say no

reluctantbrit · 23/04/2026 20:16

The first 2 months I couldn't even look at a glass of wine. I do drink but mainly when we are out for dinner nowaday.

For me it's also the shock to see how much empty calories are in a glass. So I only drink at home when I am comfortable having 150cal leftover in my daily allowance, that's maybe every 2 weeks or so. And I had no issues having a bottle per week beforehand.

Booksandcheese · 23/04/2026 21:47

On 2.5 it did nothing, on 5 it made me vomit if I drank the first couple of days after jabbing. Made no difference to fancying a glass of wine but I did cut back for a couple more days a week as it made me feel so ill, same as eating fatty food.

CountFucula · 23/04/2026 21:49

Can’t drink on Mounjaro - it just hangs around in my system making me feel like shit even after one glass

RockChik · 23/04/2026 23:04

I’m the same as @Twasasurprise Initially it reduced my alcohol consumption but not for long and now I’m back to drinking as much as before, which is too much 🙄

GrimDamnFanjo · Yesterday 00:04

It’s well documented that for some people Mounjaro discourages drinking alcohol. So much so that it is being researched as a drug to treat alcohol and drug abuse. My own consumption rapidly reduced.

DeathBanana · Yesterday 01:38

For me it was the most noticeable and practically instant effect. I was a very habitual drinker and my desire to drink was turned off like a switch.

littlezozo · Yesterday 07:03

Was a typical 2 bottles of red and a few gins a weekend when I started. By 6 months in and on 7.5 I just noticed I was drinking less. It slowly crept up on me. I still enjoy drinking. But 2 years in an one bottle over a weekend is the natural drinking pattern now.

2.5 is not considered as "working" see how it it when you go up to 5.

Me and my husband have been taking Mounjaro since Jan 2025. We went from 2.5 to 5 and are now back down to 2.5 to maintain. My husband had massive alcohol suppression but sadly not me lol. The weight loss has been incredible however (which was obviously the reason for taking it) and I have gone from 12 9 to 8 6 and husband from 20 stone to 12 6. Life changing.

BasketofBlue · Yesterday 08:53

Thank you everyone. I was surprised how little appetite I have had on just 2.5 as @littlezozosays I thought it was more a getting used to it dose. I guess I need to employ some will power as well as don’t want to be drinking empty calories when I hardly eating.

I’m a wine drinker. I still want a glass of wine most nights - just the same as before.I possibly drink a little less, but it’s not that noticeable. So Mounjaro didn’t really affect me that way. I know some people go off alcohol completely!

ReasonablyInefficient · Yesterday 11:34

I stopped having absolutely any interest in alcohol from day one. Seven months on I’m on 2 mg and I’m still not interested in buying or drinking it. I used to drink 4-5 bottles of white wine a week and was a pretty heavy drinker from the age of 25 to now (58). I’m so thankful for the change. The food suppression was very high for me from the start too - I couldn’t go higher than 3.75 mg without feeling dreadful. I’m tapering down to come off it now and I’m hoping the alcohol cravings have now re-set. Most of my previous weight gain seemed to come from the alcohol habit.

PandaPal · Yesterday 11:40

Just to add, I was something of a slow responder. I have lost weight, but it’s been very slow and steady, less then 1lb a week, and I never experienced the kind of huge drop in appetite that some people do.

So I wonder if those who are more sensitive to Mounjaro re. appetite for food, are affected in a similar way re. alcohol. Perhaps there is some correlation.

Not me. I was a super responder immediately. Within about an hour I could literally feel the effect of MJ, but sadly still drink virtually the same as before.

Sometimes it seems there’s no logic at all with Mounjaro. I was hoping it might reduce my interest in alcohol more 🤷‍♀️

SusanSometimes · Yesterday 13:06

Mounjaro has had no affect on my love of wine at all. I eat a lot less, though, so there is that Confused

Thank you. We are both so proud of ourselves. He looks absolutely incredible and it’s been life changing.

Spidey66 · Yesterday 17:11

Not on mountjaro but wegovy.

in the first 2 or 3 weeks I definitely went off alcohol. Now that’s stopped but last week we were away so I relaxed my regime a bit and one evening had 1 too many glasses of wine. I have GORD anyway, on meds for it but my god I had the worst acid reflux that night. It was definitely a combination of wine+wegovy+underlying GORD. Lesson learnt!

I’ve never been a big drinker. At the most a couple of glasses of wine or a gin and tonic every few months. Today I had my first glass of wine in about 5 months and thoroughly enjoyed it but could easily go another 5 months without wanting another one. I’ve no head for it anymore and one glass was very satisfying and enough.

sorry eta - i started mounjaro in August 24 and I’d lost 30 kgs 15 months later. In that time i had a couple of stalls lasting a few weeks but I lost weight every week. These last 3 months I’ve been reducing my dose, the highest I went to was 7.5, and I’ve managed to stay the same weight. My next goal is to get off mounjaro completely in a few months and if I’m ever a kilo above my ideal weight I’ll lose it as quickly as possible. I’m done with obesity and obesity related illness.
