How many weeks/months before you dropped a clothes size

I am curious how long it was before you were able to change a size clothes wise, comfortably. what dosage were you when you moved down

The first drop usually takes longer - in my case because I was squeezing into a size that didn’t really fit but was making do, so reality was it probably took a stone and a half to drop a size.

Now at nearly 2.5 stone down, I’ve gone down 2 sizes but that should be 3 in reality…. So squeezing into 12/14s to now in 10s and some 8s

and bra has dropped from 34g or more to 30e….

BelleEpoque27 · 05/02/2026 13:27

It will entirely depend what size you are at the start. If you're larger it will take much longer to drop a size - I've lost 10kg and I'm still very much a size 20, everything is just looser. From memory I think I'll need to lose another 10kg to be comfortabley in a size 18.

Tammy214 · 05/02/2026 13:32

I know it varies, hence am asking for actual examples

OP posts:
SilenceInside · 05/02/2026 13:37

Examples would be more relevant if they were from people who are about the same starting weight and size as you.

I was 22st when I started, and wearing size 22 plus, but really all my clothes were stretch, oversized, loose fitting. I just wore all my existing clothes for ages until they fitted me better, and then eventually got just too large. It took 3 or 4 months before I had to buy new clothes in a smaller size.

If you are 12st then none of that is relevant!

tiredlazydoesntmatter · 05/02/2026 13:38

I started in May and definitely by August my clothes were hanging off me . I had missed being able to buy next size down for summer so bought new summer clothes in Australia when I visited in November!
Bra size dropped from 42Dd now to 38c and clothes size 16 to 14 for trousers/ shorts and 20 to 18/16 for tops . Have lost about 2.5 stone .

twilightcafe · 05/02/2026 13:39

I'd say about it takes about two months to drop a stone or a dress size on me. I'm 5ft11 and started at nearly 20 stone, which was a trouser size 20. Now I'm in the 17st bracket, I'm wearing size 16. I'm aiming for a size 14 by Easter.

Meadowfinch · 05/02/2026 13:41

Each winter I put on about 10 lbs. I start running as soon as the evenings are light enough, about the end of Feb, and will have lost those 10lbs by the end of May.

On me that equates to a dress size. My diet changes too from "winter food" - pasta with sauce, casseroles and risottos to "summer food" - grilled salmon and salad, grilled meat and steamed veg etc.

I'm 5'8" and currently a size 12. Will be a 10 by the summer.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 05/02/2026 14:05

I was wearing size 20 but realistically was probably a size 22. Took me two months and 2 months to say size 20 was loose and another stone to say size 18/16. I wasn’t in 18/16 long. Now just about 6 stone down which has taken over a year and I am size 12. I reckon another half stone/toning up will put me comfortably in all 12s and some 10s.

Started at 15 stone 12.5, 5ft 2 and only doing a walk a couple of times a week to doing an exercise class, run or swim 6 days out of 7.

Some stores have very generous vanity sizing where as others don’t.

I disagree, a weight doesnt tell you anything about a body composition. we all lose weight from different places at different times, so its still a valid question without linking to similar weights.

I like that you understand the rhythm of how you live and how your weight fluctuates because of the change in movement and eating

I posted on the December starters thread about this. I'm down 10kgs to 68.1 kgs.

Started MJ mid November. No real body change and then literally overnight my trousers were hanging off me. Bought a pair of size 12 jeans two weeks ago (down from a solid size 14)

MissBridgetJones · 05/02/2026 14:23

No change in exercise as I was already doing 12000/14000 steps a day walking the dog!

Furlane · 05/02/2026 15:07

It took me about a year I think. Because I would wear loose fitting dresses it was hard to tell as I wore the same dresses when I was bigger as I did smaller. I think I went from a 16 to a 14 in about a year, the next year I was a 12. So, I would say I went from a 16 to a 10/12 in about 2.5yrs. I have put some on recently unfortunately so more on the 12 end at the moment.

I must admit that my old trousers were on the big side and elasticated, so was a 14-16, now i can wear a size 14 trouser i could breathe in a while ago.
i am now hoping to be in a size 12 in the next few weeks, which i am excited about but i also am a bit wary of trying it too early and being disappointed.

I lost 34 pounds, without WLI and didn’t drop a dress size. That was over around 14 months.

user593 · 05/02/2026 16:01

I’ve dropped from a 24/26 to a 20/22, 3st loss, in 9 weeks.

Brightmoments · 05/02/2026 16:04

2.5 months. Gone from 12stone to 10.5 stone. Still wearing size 14 clothes. They are looser but still fit.

Alltheyellowbirds · 05/02/2026 17:59

Ooh this is a good thread, watching with interest. I’ve lost 11 pounds and just starting to notice a slight change in my body, perhaps slightly slimmer at the waist, trousers perhaps a tad looser in the thigh...

So looking forward to dropping an actual dress size!

reluctantbrit · 05/02/2026 19:00

I dropped 10kg in 2.5 months when I first had to throw some size 18 tops out. Trousers took longer as I think I wore a size too small too long. Same with bras.

I am now 20kg down and started to look at the next top size. Trousers will always be a size more due to my shape. I am also due for some new bras but hoping I may loose a bit more and then go shopping as cup size G is expensive.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 05/02/2026 19:14

From a starting BMI of 59.5 it took 9 months to go down a single dress size and 4 years to reach BMI 24.9 and a size 12.

Someone on another thread compared the time it takes to drop a dress size to pulling sheets off a roll of kitchen paper. When you start it hardly seems to make any difference to the size of the roll, but the closer you get to the centre of the roll the quicker it goes. Same thing with weight loss and dress size changes.

March 2022 160kg size 36
July 2022 my old size 32/34 skirts were comfortable again.
December 2022 size 28/30
August 2023 size 24/26
June 2024 size 20,
November 2024 size 18.
June 2025 size 16
August 2025 size 14
December 2025 size 12

ResusciAnnie · 05/02/2026 19:15

32 weeks / 2 stone down and still wearing the same clothes 🤷‍♀️

Furlane · 05/02/2026 19:17

Wow some of these losses are so quick!! What am I doing wrong?!! I’m on the maximum dose and have been for ages and am not losing a thing. Think I’ve lost 20kg over 2 1/2 yrs. can’t believe people are doing that in months!! Might have to double the dose!!

dove76 · 05/02/2026 19:18

Feb 2025 14st 12 size 18/20 XL 36HH
Feb 2026 11st 7 size 16 L 34J

maz99 · 05/02/2026 19:33

I noticed it back in December (3.5 months) when I put on size 22 skinny jeans and they didn't fit tight anywhere (legs, bum, or tum) and I needed a belt to keep them up. They still had the tags on, so they must've been too tight for me to wear when I bought them. At that point I had lost 2 stones and 6 inches from my waist - so I went down 2 sizes to size 18

I think the inches lost has a lot to do with exercise, because I started going to the gym a month before I started the jab.
