Hair loss on Mounjaro

Truetoself · 17/07/2025 18:05

I have been on Mounjaro since the end of March and have noted excessive hair loss over the past month or so and my head is also more tender. Apparently nothing abnormal to see on my scalp according to DH. One of my friends said her friend stopped Mounjaro due to hair loss. Has anyone else experienced the same? If so did it settle or did it only settle once you came off Mounjaro? i still have a few Kg to go

I had a lot of hairloss with Ozempic. I didn’t have tender scalp - but could it be sun exposure? It was due to the fast weight loss and lack of protein in my diet.
My hair has regained its previous thickness now tho - I came off the Ozempic. It did take time - couple of months for the hairloss to stop.

Have you had your ferritin, B12, Iron and Folate levels tested.

Ferritin in particular if it gets low, often results widespread hair shedding on the scalp. I know very little about Mounjaro, but could it be interfering with your absorption of minerals or vitamins?

I would get an Active B12 test (not the standard one) and also get ferritin tested.

Edited:

And iron tested

Iamthemoom · 17/07/2025 18:11

No tender scalp but definitely lost more hair than normal in the first few months. My hairs very thick so it’s not a big deal for me but it was noticeable in terms of how much I lose in the shower etc.

I started Mounjaro about a month ago and the hair loss is terrible - I would really like to hear positive news that it stops soon!!

WordsFailMeYetAgain · 17/07/2025 18:17

I have had hair loss and my nails are shocking. Been on MJ for about six months. Just started taking really high strength biotin alongside multivitamins.

Truetoself · 17/07/2025 19:00

Thanks everyone. Hmm I did take iron supplements for a while as my ferritin was on the lower end of normal due to heavy bleeding but that has stopped now. Will restart and keep an eye. Eating plenty of protein and take a menopause supplement so shouldn’t really be lacking anything. Thankd for the advice and @Candlesandmatches good to know yours regained previous thickness once you came off.

Hi @Truetoself, exactly the same as you, tender scalp and more hair shedding than usual. It began about 4 weeks ago.

I started with MJ at the beginning of March. Since the hair loss I’ve been taking collagen via Freja chicken bone broth (really yummy) and also glowwa hair food and the shedding has slowed down massively in the last few days, I have a friend on MJ and she started with hair loss around the 4 month mark too. Hopefully it slows down for all of us!
ps - I prioritise protein and am not losing weight rapidly, 1-1.5lbs / week
good luck on your journey xx

What is 'normal'

For women to prevent hair loss ferritin should be above 50 ideally 70-80 max

But comments from others suggest it may just be a temporary side effect of the Mounjaro so maybe you can dismiss that altogether and give it more consideration if the hair shedding doesn't stop.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/07/2025 04:10

I've noticed this too. I think I may stop taking Mounjaro after my next pen as I don't want to end up bald.

Dysmorphia · 18/07/2025 07:22

It's the weight loss that causes the hair loss. The faster you lose weight, the more stress your body is under, and it will redirect nutrients etc away from non essential functions like hair growth.

Look up telegen effluvium.

The best way to prevent it, or at least have it not be so extreme, is to lose weight slowly and eat a balanced and nutritious diet. Maybe take a multivitamin.

I have lost weight slowly. Only 30lb in 10 months. I've mostly been maintaining since the hair loss started. I also take a multivitamin.

I had hair loss after about 3 months, lasted for about 3 months before gradually improving. Hair is back to normal now, and I’m continuing to lose weight on Mounjaro.

Truetoself · 18/07/2025 07:53

@Dysmorphiai am also a slow loser so it wouldn’t be down to rapid weight loss.

OP posts:
Dysmorphia · 18/07/2025 08:16

Slow or fast, it's still a side effect of the body changes and not the Mounjaro.

If you lost weight without Mounjaro you would still experience hair loss. It's a very common experience amongst anyone who's had to lose weight, whatever the method.

Like @SilenceInside experienced, the hair loss typically starts 2 to 3 months after the trigger and can continue for up to 12 months. Your body needs time to adjust, to realise you're not starving or anything like that and that it can go back to allowing non essential functions like hair growth, nail growth etc. to take up nutrients and energy again.

It will grow back.

FoxyLoxyy · 18/07/2025 23:21

@Dysmorphia that’s not correct. It is now a listed side effect on the leaflets that accompany your medication. So yes, rapid weight loss is a cause of hair loss. Vitamin deficiencies too. And also Mounjaro itself

that’s just a fact

SilenceInside · 18/07/2025 23:42

It’s also usually mild and temporary, as in my experience. If it’s a big worry for people then of course Mounjaro isn’t going to be suitable for them and people should stop taking it, or not start.

Last time I went to the hairdresser, she told me my hair has never been in better condition.

I’ve been on MJ since last year and now maintenance but for 9 months continuously, I’ve been on

MNM
Biotin
collagen
B12

All daily.

Oh and I use the newest Dyson air wrap and no straighteners ever on my hair since I got it.

BeesUnicornPot · 19/07/2025 12:51

And my lifelong dry scalp has completely cleared up!

Many other benefits but these are just the hair related ones.

can you tell us which brands pls. I have been taking biotin 1000ug for a month and now upped to 12000ug. MNM, what is that please? Also, I understood that biotin was vitamin B12.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 20/07/2025 00:20

I had a period of 'more than usual' hair loss (I tend to lose a lot). It was worst when I was on 2.5-7.5, but once I moved to 10 (and up) it's back to normal.

Hi, I use British Supplement company, highly recommend!

I had hair loss before MJ. I now take hair, skin and nail supplements, collegen and put minoxidil on my scalp each evening. The hair loss has slowed down but I am still so conscious of my thin hair.

I ended up buying a hair topper. It has taken years off me and my confidence has soared. It blends in with my own hair and I have just told people I have had extensions put in. I get so many comments of how great l look after losing 3 stone and having nice hair.

raven0007 · 20/07/2025 12:18

This was my hair loss when the first time I tried WLI. That was one brush after a shower. I think I lost over half of my hair. Luckily for me, I had very thick very long hair. It scared me so I stopped the injections. It took a couple of months to stop falling out.
I’m now week 6 back using WLI, this time round I am taking My Journey supplements, biotin and protein. I’m also using growth booster hair stuff. So far I’ve noticed minimal loss. I’ve also made sure to eat, the first time round I just went with the suppression and I was basically starving my body.

I’m losing hair, started after 6 months on MJ ans I’m not losing weight rapidly, 3st in 6 months. I have a lot of weight still to lose and I’m continuing on MJ, but I’m hoping it stops falling out soon. The side effects of being morbidly obese are worse than hair loss, so I’m sticking with it.
