Emetephobic but desperate to start Mounjaro

caterpilly · 17/05/2025 12:23

Is anybody in my boat and had a positive experience? I’m very emetophobic and I’m getting myself so worked up to start Mounjaro.

I have pcos, very overweight, pre diabetes. Struggling to lose weight for the last few years.

I just can’t find it in myself to start with all the nausea and vomiting posts I see online.

There are lots of people with no side effects too - including me. 12 weeks in I've never felt even slightly queasy and have dropped 10+ kilos. I found that forums are only full of people with issues which makes the downsides feel more widespread.

HansHolbein · 17/05/2025 12:27

You don’t know how you will react until you try it really. You have to be prepared for all of it. Do your research but stay away from scaremongering bollocks in the media.

Most side effects ease with time. Some people decide not to continue.

In my own experience of being on it since October, I’ve had no side effects apart from being cold.

I’ve lost just over 6st and my PCOS symptoms have gone.

Yellowsubmarine55 · 17/05/2025 14:58

People only post bad side effects, for every one of them, there's probably 5 who don't get anything.

Also who's to say you will have those things you are worried about? They are mainly caused by what you eat and how much you eat so learning your triggers will help enormously.

So for my first week I ate a bit more than I should have on one night and yes I was sick but nothing came up. I have felt a bit queasy on other occasions but eating actually helps. Then on week 4 I had 2 days of constipation and last weekend I had 3 days of liquid 💩. Other than that absolutely nothing.
You should weigh up the risks of staying as you are and potentially having health issues later on or maybe trying it and it working fantastic.

SusanSometimes · 17/05/2025 15:00

I'm seven weeks in, have lost 8kg and never once vomited or felt nauseous. The worst side effect I've had is mild constipation. I also have prediabetes and that's the reason I started this.

GiveMeWordGames · 17/05/2025 17:30

I guess nobody can promise you you won't get nausea, and you may sail through but only you can decide if it's worth the fear and possibility of it happening.

I wouldn't say I'm at the level of phobic but I loathe puking above all forms of illness. I was hoping to dodge that SE. I haven't entirely.

I've thrown up once, and it was a combination of eating later than usual and having to get up very early. All you can do is mitigate the risks by knowing things like the first few days after you jab are the most vulnerable, especially when going up a dose. Eating small in the evening might help (most gastric SE are worse at night I've found) and learning what foods work best for you. It's all so individual.

Health wise it otherwise sounds like a no-brainer for you.

Peawhack · 17/05/2025 17:31

I know 3 people taking mounjaro, including myself. And none of us have had any side effects.

Zout · 17/05/2025 17:44

I have had no side effects at all apart from
feeling a bit cold.

You start with a tiny dose. Believe me the benefits outweigh the risks.

SpunkySquid · 17/05/2025 17:53

I started in February and I’m also in the lucky no side effects club. I think it’s a case of more people post about being ill than not.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 17/05/2025 17:55

Since October I've puked once, on my first time taking it. I've had a fair few episodes of lots of diahorrea and feeling queasy, and the killer sulphur eggy burps as I've moved up doses - but no actual sick.

Catsservant · 17/05/2025 18:00

yes I couldn’t even keep water down after 3 weeks but my daughter has done great on it

MrsPlantagenet · 17/05/2025 18:03

People don’t tend to post to say they have no side effects.

I have 5 friends on mounjaro. Neither they, nor I, have had a single side effect. I’m on 15mg, the max dose and I feel perfectly fine! I’m properly skinny for the first time in 10 years and I feel and look fantastic.

Mysticmaiden · 18/05/2025 07:10

7.5 months in on 12.5mg and the main side effects I've had are being cold and tired, probably from low calorie intake. I've had diarrhoea twice from processed meat and some nausea and dizziness when I started from low blood sugar, which was resolved by eating.
I've never vomited in my life, even as a baby so I'm quite afraid of it but I'm doing well to get to 43 and not experience it yet!
Best advice is to eat little and often.

lizzoinbrum · 18/05/2025 07:18

I had HG in pregnancy and I as reliably informed by numerous people I couldn’t take it as it’s the same hormone that that caused my horrendous sickness. It turns out this entirely wrong. I’m a week in and feel amazing! I have loads of energy and sleeping well. I’m now annoyed I didn’t start earlier.

SmallSnooze · 18/05/2025 09:59

I am with you, I have not been able to bring myself to order it because of my emetophobia, which controls my life. I sat on the websites agonising over wether to hit buy for months.

However this morning, miserable after standing on the scales again and seeing no movement, I've bitten the bullet and just this minute ordered it.

I have 6 friends in real life on it who've had no side effects and 1 who was too nauseous to continue (but never sick).

We can do it together if you want.

How strange! I also had hyperemesis- been on MJ for six weeks and only had occasional nausea when I’ve been hungry.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/05/2025 10:33

My husband, his brother, and his boss are all on MJ, and none of them have any nausea.

MsTamborineMan · 18/05/2025 10:50

I too am emetephobic and I've just received my first dose. I can let you know how i get on. I am pretty worried about the nausea and vomiting, but I had a sickness bug recently and actually I coped fine. So that's calmed the emetephobia quite a lot

Tbh my weight makes me more unhappy than my fear of vommit so I just need to be brave. And if I'm really nauseous I'll just have to stop.

caterpilly · 18/05/2025 10:51

@MsTamborineMan yes please let me know how you get on. Thank you!!

Thank you everyone for the responses :)

All the best with it.

My husband has been really pleased with the results.

Crunchymum · 18/05/2025 16:10

Emetophobe here, although my phobia is more about other people vomiting than myself.

I'm 4 doses in and so far, so good.

I'm generally not a vomiter anyway (most Emetophobe's are not as we know all the "tricks" to keep us from getting ill / vomiting) but if MJ did make me very sick then yes I'd have to stop.

I would definitely say try it and see how it goes.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 18/05/2025 16:33

Honestly, I've had almost no side-effects.
Just a bit of heartburn.

I've been on it since last July. My total loss since last January is 7st 3lb.

Scarlettpixie · 18/05/2025 16:57

I have been on it since October and haven't vomitted. I have had 2 bouts of extreme nausea (once after chinese takeaway and once after dominoes pizza) but other than that side effects have been mild. A bit of nausea (usually at night, sorted by ginger lozenges and pepto bismol), a bit of bloating although mostly on 5mg and occasional indigestion (which I get anyway).

Of course noone can tell you that you won't vomit so there is always that risk but it certainly doesn't happen to everyone (and I believe is less likely with careful eating).

Alifemadelessordinary · 18/05/2025 17:14

4 weeks in. 11lb down not a single side effect.

I feel like it's done wonders for my mood and productivity too.

Wish I'd done it sooner.

Bananafofana · 18/05/2025 17:17

No side effects save for ever so slight nausea one day after a stupidly large (ie large even if not on MJ) meal. I have stayed on 2.5mg for three months and lost 10 kg. Remember you don’t need to up the dose if you are responding well
