Giving up mounjaro because of anxiety

mounjaro2025 · 21/02/2025 22:51

Today I have made the decision to stop taking mounjaro. I should have had my 4th 5mg injection, moving up to 7.5mg next week. However I just can’t do it anymore. I’ve been anxious and depressed during the last few weeks, and it’s getting worse - overthinking everything with intense brain fog and not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am already an anxious person anyway and maybe I’ve got it into my head that mounjaro is the reason I am feeling so overwhelmed by everything. But I’ve read quite a few posts now online that people are suffering with anxiety from taking it and I think I may be with one of them. If I was experiencing fantastic weight loss then maybe I would consider pushing through, but I am not even getting the benefit of that. I also hate how for a few days after every dose I feel like my food is repeating on me and burps taste like food I have eaten 2/3 days prior 🤢

Good luck to those on your journey, I hope the drug works for you.

Sounds like the right decision. Hope you feel better soon :)

Tohaveandtohold · 22/02/2025 08:08

You have to do what’s best for you and that sounds like a right decision. Hope you feel better

mounjaro2025 · 22/02/2025 08:43

Thank you. I just feel like I am the only person who feels like this, and everyone else just seems to be successful on it. 😢

Ah that’s shit for you. Have you sought help for your anxiety? I’d speak to my gp. Mental Illness is horrible but there is help available.

for the burps, basically avoiding high sulphur foods ie fizzy drinks, onions, garlic, beans, eggs, etc means it doesn’t happen, and taking something like a psyllium husk daily with a lot of water keeps you regular so nothing sits in your system too long,

howver the drug doesn’t do the heavy lifting, you need to eat within a calorie deficit to see losses, the drug is just a tool to help us do that.

id speak to my gp about my anxiety if I was you and good luck, sounds like for you it is the right decision and better to focus on your mental health.

Pashazade · 22/02/2025 08:54

I'd say come off and give it a couple of months and see how you're doing. Presumably your BMI is still above thirty so if the anxiety decreases significantly you'll know it was the Mounjaro and if it doesn't you can get some help with it and maybe try again (if you feel up to the side effects).

witte · 22/02/2025 08:59

I had raised anxiety at first but it got better.

Yes I think if you suffer anxiety then the act of taking a drug, any drug, can be a trigger, I am not sure there are many folks who don’t have anxiety before who suddenly develop it on the drug, would be a small amount, plus sitting googling makes things worse.

the op seems to already struggle with anxiety off the drug, from what she said, so appears this has triggered an escalation. It’s a shame for her, but focusing on her mental health recovery is the most important thing.

You are not, you said in your OP you have read quite a few posts of people experiencing similar.

For me it would depend on how much weight I had to lose. I started off at over 20 stone and would take increased anxiety every day of the week before stopping MJ. I do feel for people who just have 2/3/4 stone to lose it may not feel the anxiety increase is worth it. Have you tried anything for the anxiety though? It might help.

Ah you won’t be, you said you read it yourself, and signficant anxiety is a fairly common disorder. Just focus on your recovery there,

it might also be the reason you’ve not lost much, as you’ve not had the mental health to focus on cals, exercise etc to ensure you see the losses.

get yourself healthy, speak to your gp, and then you can focus on weight, mental health recovery needs to come first.💐

You definitely aren't. I'm medicated for my anxiety and was wary about it before I started but my GP was happy for me to try.

If mine had got worse than it did I would have stopped too so I do understand Flowers

Marydoll5 · 24/04/2025 18:02

I'm on week 6 of 2.5mg and have had problems with not being able to eat for the past 2 weeks. I hear my tummy rumbling but can't make myself eat.
I have also had crippling anxiety and have shut down, can't function or get energy to do anything. I'm getting married in 2 weeks and cannot be like this. I last injected a week ago and am not taking any more mountjaro.
Can anyone help me with advice on how to get back to normal?
I'm on venlafaxine top dose too.

ChainVaper · 24/04/2025 18:38

Hi I’m so sorry you’re feeling like this .. I can relate so much as I’m really struggling too with crippling anxiety and mild to moderate depression symptoms (previously have been medicated for this ). I think for me it really has come to a point now where I am going to slowly reduce from the 10mg dose and see my GP next week to possibly go back on fluoxetine. I hope you can find out what will be best for you to do , and please know you definitely aren’t the only person struggling with these symptoms.

Nope, def not just you. I'd usually manage my stress and anxiety with booze and carbs, but with that coping mechanism gone I am struggling sometimes. Definitely miss my coping mechanism! But "choose your hard" and for me, on balance, this works.

Mounraine · 24/04/2025 20:19

No advice, just validation and best wishes. I think lots of people don’t find it for them or even just a case of not them at this time. You’re not the only one.

Hi Hun I stopped mounjaro too about 2 weeks ago because I do use medication for anxiety and it's been under control for 8 years but this triggered me so bad I've been pacing around, palpitations , foggy head not been able to work or concentrate. Hair is shedding loads Iv been a mess . Hoping it gets better soon xx

Milliemoo22222 · 14/06/2025 06:48

Hi can you tell me how you’re felling now… I have been on Mounjaro since Feb and just increased my dose to 12.5 and my anxiety is through the roof. I am definitely finished with it.

Milliemoo22222 · 14/06/2025 07:46

Forgot to add my anxiety has been fine for 7 years.. have you felt any better?

feistymumma · 15/06/2025 18:16

You are not the only one OP, I did not really have an issue with anxiety before mounjaro but towards the end of my last 5mg dose I started to feel panicky and worrying about everything until I ended up in A&E with anxiety and panic attacks. Had also been having palpitations all week. They did all the relevant tests which came back clear. I then moved up to 7.5mg and this is when everything just worsened and I didn't link it Mounjaro until after the second 7.5mg dose. By this time I was very depressed, anxious having irrational thoughts and my head felt as if it would burst. I wasn't sleeping well either and just felt frightened of everything. All I could manage was to drop the children off to nursery and then back to bed where I would overthink and worry myself sick. I've now been prescribed sertraline again which I hadn't taken for 8years and also anxiety meds which I had never taken before. I attribute this to Mounjaro. I did lose 12kg though in three months. I feel so much better now mentally that I haven't injected for two weeks but I am contemplating restarting at 2.5mg and staying there as I didn't have any anxiety (or perhaps didn't notice it then) but I am hesitant as those two weeks were the worst I've ever felt mentally. I kept on wishing I could remove my head (not in reality) but just because of the pressure I was feeling. There is another thread on here about the same thing.

Clc70 · 16/06/2025 00:36

I have had to stop mounjaro as my anxiety went off the scale. I have had anxiety and am medicated but it was under control. After about few weeks at 2.5mg it returned with a vengeance … it’s been horrific. I’ve stopped the Mounjaro and anxiety is slowly going away. Of course I can’t say for sure but nothing else changed . I had really bad nausea on mounjaro and that might have been a trigger but I just felt so unstable unhappy and anxious that I had to give up

Snippit · 16/06/2025 03:16

I’ve slowly lost weight by following the intermittent fasting regime. I eat my meals in an 8 hour window, I usually have breakfast around 11am, my last meal/food is approximately 7pm. I’m now down to 9st 7lbs, which I haven’t been for many years. My digestion feels so much better as well, the 16 hour fasting phase feels really good, it’s refreshing for your stomach to rumble for food in the morning.

Clc70 · 16/06/2025 08:32

well done you !!! That sounds amazing and that there is hope outside the injections☺️

Milliemoo22222 · 18/06/2025 13:09

Was this question for me? I felt more like myself. Anxiety is so much better , however I thought I would try the lower dose again and injected 2mg on Sunday. I did have a bout of anxiety but brought about more by knowing how I felt last time and worrying that it would happen again. So far so good. Suppression is there at a level I like as it isn't full on like it was on the 5 and 7.5. I'll update again in a fortnight about the anxiety.

holisticlifestyleclinic · 18/06/2025 22:44

Everyone has different tolerance to the injection. If you feel more anxious and there are no other changes in your environment it may be it. Listen to your body and do what is best for you. Have you implemented any dietary changes while you've been on the injections?
