Why am I so unwell after 3 months on MJ?

Honestly ... so gutted.

Have lost over 1 stone 8lb since November with very minimal side effects. I'm on week 1 month two of 5mg and I have been nauseas the first few days after jab. But for the past week I have had extreme diorreah and sulphur burps to the point I can't even make my work.

Has this happened to anyone else? Why the sudden intolerance? Should I just stop?

I have a GP appointment this week.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I find the side effects very up and down. I’ve had a couple of weeks like you describe. After I went up to 5mg I went back down to 3.75 (by counting clicks) and then slowly worked my way back up.

peppermint capsules help me with the sulphur burps especially if I take them just before they get bad.

eating clean and healthily leading up to the injection and just after also helps me

InkHeart2024 · 20/01/2025 07:20

It's really common to get gastric side effects especially when moving up to 5mg seemingly. For most people they pass. I got effects for around a month to be honest but nothing since then. I stayed on 5mg for 2 months until my stomach felt ok but didn't have a problem going up after that.

12purplepencils · 20/01/2025 07:21

I wouldn’t rush to stop, they are common side effects, just reduce your dose, even to 2.5

12purplepencils · 20/01/2025 07:22

I wouldn’t see the GP just about this - what do you think they’ll say? They are expected side effects.

It was mostly for a medical fit note as I have been off since last week and I don't see myself making it in tomorrow and my work will ask for one now.

Thank you! I think I might! Do you know how many clicks that is on the 5mg pen?

I haven't been eating as clean if I'm honest. Do you think that's what is triggering this? I'm usually very healthy but it's been a stressful few weeks.

I should note, I haven't been eating take outs at all. But had Diet Coke, chocolate crisps & pasta a bit more often than usual

All pens are 60 clicks for a full dose. So you need to do 45 clicks for 3.75

Um yes! the medication slows gastric emptying and also lowers your blood sugar and you're filling your stomach up with crap food and actively fighting the effects by eating by food that increases blood sugar. You can't fight against the medication and expect no consequences.

12purplepencils · 20/01/2025 07:46

Yes diet seems to make a difference to me, or maybe it’s just building up in your system and you need to increase more slowly.

a full dose is 60 clicks.

so if you want 2.5 from a 5mg pen then do 30 clicks.

if you want 3.75 from a 5mg pen then do 45 clicks. It’s just about trying to find the sweet spot when you’re still losing weight but side effects are manageable.

j also have stuck by the mantra of not increasing whilst im still losing weight, and I do increase slowly as (only some weeks) I seem to be sensitive to the gastro effects.

the burps are horrendous and totally uncontrollable! (But as I say definitely order some peppermint oil capsules, then at least they taste and smell a bit pepperminty instead!)

12purplepencils · 20/01/2025 07:48

Also google low sulphur foods and make sure you’re not eating high sulphur things around injection day

justanothermanicmonday1 · 20/01/2025 07:49

Thank you all for such wonderful advice! I need to do this properly as I'm just waiting it by not eating healthy and now I'm suffering the consequences. It's just been so stressful recently so I've lost track a bit.

It's an interesting issue about a fit note I think as arguably you are taking something voluntarily which is making you sick. Is it actually reasonable to do this? Playing devil's advocate here btw. I don't take weight loss drugs as I'm way too scared, mainly of side effects as I work full time, but follow the discussions.

I did this of course it is - it's prescribed medication for a medical issue and she's got got diarrhoea. How's she supposed to go to work?

RaininSummer · 20/01/2025 07:57

I guess so. I suppose I wasn't thinking of it as prescribed medication as such since most people seem to go about it privately.

TidyLion · 20/01/2025 07:57

It does sound like it could be a change of diet or one of those things with MJ, but don’t forget there are LOADS of bugs around at the moment. I had 48 hours of the worst D&V I’ve ever had and was convinced it was the MJ. Three days later the rest of my family had it none of whom are on MJ.

Babymamamama · 20/01/2025 08:00

Try a few days on veggie soups and very light salad with clean protein ie chicken or fish. Reckon you will feel much better. It’s your diet causing this i would imagine.

It's prescribed by a doctor whether privately or via the NHS

'I did this' was from the start of a previous post that I forgot to finish - I didn't do this but would do this if I needed to!

letshavetea · 20/01/2025 08:05

I hope you feel better soon. I’ve had to titrate up very slowly to 5mg (started MJ in October) due to side effects. Am now okay with still some nausea, burps, indigestion and occasional constipation.
It’s vital that you drink two litres of water a day (massively helps with side effects). I find no UPF’s, lots of fruit and veg, protein, seeds, pulses, grains, whole Greek yogurt etc really helps. Try listening to some of the ZOE podcasts. The latest one talks about weight loss injections and what to eat.

winterdarkness · 20/01/2025 08:12

I think it's definitely your diet. I've had very few side effects but when I do get acid reflux, it's always the day I've eaten something obviously unhealthy.

HellofromJohnCraven · 20/01/2025 08:30

I'm currently on 7.5mg after a few weeks off (got noro so decided anything that slowed down the gut prob wasn't a good idea.
It has reminded me that I have to be good. Anything that is fatty (cheese) or crisps gives me terrible indigestion. It also bungs me up so I take inulin powder mixed into protein yoghurt x 3 a day which works wonders.

BlondeMamaToBe · 20/01/2025 08:32

I would stop if it’s affecting your work!

Shrinkingrose · 20/01/2025 08:36

An then it’s your diet. You need to eat healthy. And most folks have issues moving to 5 but they quickly dissipate after a couple of weeks. But if you’re also not eating well then it’s a double whammy.
