Mounjaro - can't eat!

pinacollateral · 15/07/2024 07:45

I'm on my second week of mounjaro 5mg.

I went out for a meal on Saturday night at a fancy restaurant and probably overate out of politeness. I left feeling very full/ uncomfortable and was a bit unwell in the night.

Yesterday (Sunday) I still felt off, and barely ate anything at all. Probably had 400 calories through the day.

This morning I've woken up with still zero appetite. I got myself an apple from the fruit bowl but it's sitting on the coffee table, I can't face it.

I'm getting worried that I am eating too little but I am really struggling to force myself to eat.

Anyone else had this experience?

Yes, I'm finding it hard to summon up desire to eat. Make sure you keep your hydration levels up.

Recycledblonde · 15/07/2024 08:00

I struggle to eat for a couple of days after injecting it. I'm on 5mg, took it yesterday morning and only managed 2 pieces of toast all day. Don't feel like eating yet but know that I'll start eating more normally tomorrow. I'm losing 2-3lbs a weeks which I'm happy with.

KeepingUndercover · 15/07/2024 08:11

One of the things it does is slow down your digestion so you feel fuller for longer. If you overeat, it will take longer to feel able to eat again so I try and be really aware of when I'm feeling full and stop. I'm hoping that's good training for when I come off too!

I try and make sure what I am eating is as nutritious as possible too. Good quality protein and carbs and veg. You could try making a smoothie for breakfast (not just a fruit one, with yoghurt/oats and stuff to make it more of a meal and sip it slowly, or a proteiny soup for lunch that might feel more palatable than a plate of food.

I also know I eat more on later days so if I have a day I can't face much later in the week I'll get more nutrition in and it will look better over the week.

If the suppression is too much, you could also drop back down a dose.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2024 08:13

I've got used to this. First 3 to 4 days I eat about 600-800 a day, last couple of days 1100

I'm only losing a pound a week though - my body is very resistant to losing weight

KeepingUndercover · 15/07/2024 08:14

You can also opt for the eating little but often routine. If a full meal is too much, eat something small. Cut the apple up and eat a few slices with some nut butter. Graze a little through the day. I think I get worse side effects and go off food more if I don't try and eat small amounts. It's like pregnancy sickness!

ThirdStorm · 15/07/2024 08:17

My BMI started at 33 so I figured a few days of not much/very little/nothing wasn't going to hurt me. And it didn't. I ate very bland for the first 4 weeks too, now I have some variety. Just drink lots of water (I use electrolytes too).

Wow what a drug, it must be so strange after having food noise all your life. This must be what it's like for those people who aren't bothered about food and stay slim all their lives.

This is why I want it, but can't afford it. My problem is food noise. I can't turn it off.

Disturbia81 · 15/07/2024 09:10

@CandiedPrincess It never quietens does it.. I lost all my weight years ago and kept it off but I have to battle the noise constantly, it hasn't left me and I would love it to go away. There's nice food everywhere and feels like everyone else is indulging in it!

CandiedPrincess · 15/07/2024 09:15

I don't think people who don't have it understand it @Disturbia81 I am literally always thinking about food - my next meal, food at the weekend, what to cook (I love cooking), treat foods...I'm certainly not one of those people that 'forget to eat'.

Same, hopefully it'll become much cheaper as it'll solve so many problems for the NHS. People are getting bigger and nothing else will stop that.

Definitely go for little and often and also drinking calories. I agree with the suggestion of a protein shake (I always add a frozen banana for extra cals) and just sip it. Cut up the apple into nice little chunks and nibble on those.

BleachedJumper · 15/07/2024 10:56

I don’t think it will be too damaging to have some low calorie/fast days.

keep your water intake up and make sure you’re taking multivitamins etc so you’re still getting some nutritional value.

Lu35x · 24/07/2024 08:04

I’ve been on 5mg for two weeks and I really can’t eat. Forced myself to have a breakfast bar this morning and already feel like I’m going to vomit. It is getting dangerous though as I can feel my body getting weaker. My eyesight keeps going blurry and I had the worst migraine and vomiting yesterday and thought I was going to pass out. I know I need to eat but I can’t face anything, I physically can’t take even small meals. I’m stopping this week as I am too frightened to continue. Read about people being admitted to hospital as their bodies had gone into starvation mode. Please be careful

Callmejudith · 24/07/2024 08:05

That’s so scary. Are you on 2.5?

ThirdStorm · 24/07/2024 08:23

@Lu35x Why don't you call your prescriber for some advice? Have you tried a protein shake maybe? Make sure you keep going with water.

pinacollateral · 24/07/2024 16:57

@Lu35x That's how I have felt sometimes since going up to 5mg and I have been dizzy at times. I'm losing weight but having to really keep tabs of when I feel dizzy and make myself eat. It's not sustainable, my body is very weak at the moment.

ACEwards · 27/07/2024 06:36

I'm only on week 2 of 2.5 am considering stopping after this. I have to force myself to get to 1000 cals everyday and I've been continuously dizzy and woozy since day 3. I don't really fancy anything to eat but know that if I don't my dizziness will be worse. It's especially bad first thing in the morning when getting out of bed 😥

Lost about 5lbs in my first week, which is great, but I don't think it's worth feeling like this 🤷‍♀️

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/07/2024 07:33

@pinacollateral @Lu35x did you jump straight from 2.5 to 5 or did you titrate up? I am easing my way up by counting clicks. I’ve stepped up 3.33, 3.75 x2, 4.33 and each step up the first day or two has been tough.
Perhaps you need to reduce the dose for a couple of weeks.

Spectre8 · 27/07/2024 08:07

Your feelong dizzy etc cos ur salt levels in your body are most likley imbalanced. it's like doing an extreme fast such as water fasting. You need to ensure your magnesium levels are normal
Try an electrolyte drink.

I add electrolyte tablets to my water in the morning, but do I need to be drinking them all day? They literally make me gag lol

ThirdStorm · 27/07/2024 08:26

@ACEwards I use High5 electrolyte tablets, just drop one in my water bottle (sometimes with squash). I find them quite delicious - berry or blackcurrant are my favs. Then I move onto water. I drink one every other day.

I have similar ones but I think they all taste salty... it's so odd 🤮

ThirdStorm · 27/07/2024 08:28

@ACEwards MJ played havoc sense of taste initially, I went off coffee! I was so sad but after 4 weeks I enjoyed it again.

Spectre8 · 27/07/2024 11:40

You should only need one electrolyte drink a day if ur not eating food or barely eating. Thing is by the time you realise aka dizziness it's a bit late and sometimes you have to break to reset.

I'm not on the injections but the symptoms being described cos of lack of eating enough is the same u can experience if u do a water fast which I have done before
