Continuing Mounjaro... Thread 12

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

17 - Some of the places you can order from are:

Thanks Agathamystery and Dontevengohere that does make sense, especially as someone who is already worrying about what till happen when I stop taking the medication. It just feels so different on those last two days in comparison to the first couple where I have to force myself to eat.

FastGoose · 08/06/2024 21:40

Looking for a bit of advice on splitting the dose due to me not being so confident on my basic maths 😂
So I'm coming up to my 3rd dose of 5mg meaning I'll have a couple of doses left before a new pen. I decided to order my new pen last week which was delivered Friday. I ordered a 7.5mg pen. Now. My suppressions been pretty good these last couple days and I'm starting to feel I was a little hasty in my ordering the next dose up so was considering going back to medexp with my tail between my legs to order another 5mg (if they'd let me, I'm not sure if they'd be aware of my recent purchase from zava?) and then I thought about perhaps breaking the 7.5mg down.
Would this work to the appropriate full usage of the pen?
Wk 1 5mg
Wk 2 5mg
Wk 3 5mg
Wk 4 7.5mg
Wk 5 7.5mg

Now I've typed that out and visualised it. There would be a little dose of 2.5 leftover wouldn't there (if I use the bonus dose for week 5)
TIA in advance, welcome and open to suggestions and I hope my ramblings makes sense 😂

EDIT. Nope even after revising that my maths was still all wrong! Can anyone help my dulled brain out here lol

HanSB · 08/06/2024 21:49

@FastGoose Your 7.5mg pen has 5 doses (inc bonus) so is 37.5mg total and what you have written uses up 30mg

Excellent thankyou so much! So that wouldn't work either due to the open expiry date. Hmm

Mainly been lurking but I’d be interested in people’s views on calorie counting while on MJ (or after). I’ve been on it since start of April, first month was pretty good, nearly a stone lost, since then more of a plateau.

Well a bit up and down, I’d had tons of travel, for work and a holiday, so lots of meals out and quite a lot of booze (I’ve not found it’s done all that much to reduce my appetite for that!) .

Anyway, trying to be more determined in the 3 weeks I’ve got coming up, where there are fewer excuses! I have always tended to count calories (though not on holiday) but I’m just wondering if I need to shift away from that kind thing of mentality.

I’m just thinking I’ve been dieting for more than 30 years and is MJ a chance to listen to appetite (or lack of) and build healthier patterns where everything isn’t totted up?? I think the calorie counting can make me a wee bit obsessive but without it I’m not sure I’d feel in control.

I do tend to eat fairly healthily at home, chicken/avocado salad lunch, fish and veg tea, or veggie curry, fruit and nuts for snacks. Nights out and travel are a bit different. Sorry this is a bit rambling but the excellent posts about mothers and attitudes to diet rang true for me and I’m just wondering if it’s time to take a step away from calorie counting … or if that’s top risky. What do others reckon?

Dear all
It's been a while. Lovely posts
A number of points

  1. The weight plateau Ed a bit. I found that the hot wearher is making me retain fluid . So counterintuitivley I have upped my water intake to 2+ litres that's helped
  2. Still getting appetite suppression so I am now on my second cycle of 7.5mg . I would suggest not upping your dose after 5mg if you are still getting suppression and weight loss. Also some of the multivitamins increase your appetite. So keep an eye on them
  3. Mum's,! Don't we love them. We have to remember that when we are around them we regress to our 5 year old self.
It may be that time to have that non emotional candid convo with mum about the fact you love her but those words are hurting and damaging you. You would prefer her to say nothing if she can't say anything good And the same goes for DH. Remember its your body , your bloody fat, your weight loss your bloody Mounjaro, your absolutely bloody decision. Remember its for you. YOU are worth it. Stepping of the soap box new 📦
DownWithThisKindOfThing · 08/06/2024 22:28

Are there any MedExpress codes please?

they sent me a 20% off one for my birthday but you can’t use it for GLPs!

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 08/06/2024 22:30

I’ve just taken my 3rd 5mg injection, got another 5 mg pen in the fridge. Think I’ll get a 3rd mg and then look to move up to 7.5 mg once that’s done, so 16 weeks in.

You’re about a week too late 😔MedExpress codes are over.

Choux · 08/06/2024 22:49

Wasn't there some kind of £10 off code for MedExpress? Not sure if it was for use on Mounjaro though.

Foxlover46 · 09/06/2024 00:06

@Bas16 I started at 14.7 I'm on week 2 so we will be in a similar timeframe

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 09/06/2024 00:18

Ah not to worry, still cheaper than Boots!

camerontucker · 09/06/2024 04:58

ihatecoffee · 07/06/2024 13:39

@Wonkypictureframe
No they just refused
I'd told them I was currently on MJ but was wanting 10mg (with a code as this was a couple of weeks ago when a few codes still worked)
They just said no as my BMI was under 30!

It's a bit irrelevant now as MedExpress are more expensive, but I'm wondering how many more of us will (or are) having problems moving over

So I've been looking around but have found Voy is the cheapest now (with a code)

Not sure why all pharmacies seem to be cashing in!!

I went into my Voy account to get the code and the option to refer a friend has gone.

camerontucker · 09/06/2024 05:22

Found it, too early in the morning! So if anyone wants to order from Voy here's a code for £85 off

They have stopped doing codes now.

A lot of us moved to Zava as they are doing referral codes that are 15% off and zavas prices have gone down also. If you want to switch someone here can give you.a Zava code.

Others have already replied a lot so won't go into more detail.

Try to remain focused on doing this for you and your health. Don't worry about it others notice or not. As long as you get to a point where you feel happy, that's the main thing.

Is anyone else worried that Zava will stop doing discount codes as well soon?!

If med express had to stop because they were no longer allowed to offer them, will Zava have to do the same?!

Either way, I think at some point we may have to start paying full price! 😱

Very happy this morning, it’s my third 2.5mg jab tonight and including the week of low carb I did before my first injection I’ve lost 17.6lbs. My BMI is now in the overweight category instead of Obese and I feel so much better about myself.

I’ve struggled with constipation this week but that could be because of an accident and a few days on morphine. Has anyone got any great tips for helping with constipation?

I’m so pleased I found this thread which gave me the confidence to order my first pen. I just couldn’t get my head in the right place to lose weight, I’d be really good for 5 days and then eat 7 days worth of food at the weekend. Now it’s so much easier to make the right choices.
