Continuing Mounjaro...part 8

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 05/05/2024 14:42

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
  • The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
  • Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
  • Boots £219 +
  • Chemist4U £179 +
  • Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@Carelesswispalover hello fellow tall member, love the username. I started at 17 stone 6lbs, my absolute heaviest ever and I was quite shocked as it really does hide well on me. The catalyst for me was a walk with my teens where I realised I could feel the back fat rolls rubbing, then a photo at the end of us sat on a bench showed an additional chin I wasn't aware of!
I'm aiming for just under 12 stone, ideally 11.5 but realistically 12 would be fine, especially if I was a bit toned/had some muscle which I plan to have managed by the time I get to that stage.
I was last that weight in around 2017 after losing 50+lbs doing keto. Unfortunately, keto is hard work mentally as I was constantly thinking about food and having to cook separate meals and I just can't sustain that.

Today is weigh in day as I started on a Wednesday (since moved jab day to Sunday) and down 17lbs in 7 weeks. Stayed the same this week, but after my hideous weekend that's fine and I've already lost the pound I put on. I'm still on 3.75mgs.

MrsFlippers · 08/05/2024 08:37

Newbie here, hoping for a bit of advice from more experienced users. I started on 1st May and didn't feel any effects - still as ravenouos and tempted to binge as ever :-( Took my second injection today in my stomach and noticed that a fair bit of liquid tricked out as I plunged. The needle was in properly, but I took it out and reinjected to finish administering the dose. There was another leak. So I'm not sure that I've had the full dose. Any advice on how what went wrong? Should I try my thigh next time? Wondering if the skin (flab!) around my tum is too loose to be a good injection site? Also, if I didn't feel any effects in week one, is it possible that the injection leaked last week? And if anyone else saw no benefits in week one, did they have a better result in weeks 2/3/4 or is it likely that I'll need to wait til the next 5mg pen to see any effects? Sorry that's a lot of questions! Would appreciate advice from anyone who knows more about this than me (which is probably everyone!) thanks

LifeisHard73 · 08/05/2024 08:55

Hello everyone, I’ve been quiet on here for a while. I had a weekend away in the UK & then 5 days in Spain! I delayed my 3rd jab and took when I got back from Spain. Overall I’ve gain 2 pounds but I’ll get that off quickly I hope. I’m now temporarily not making any social plans that involve food or alcohol.

Currently 10st 9 and my first goal is to be below 10 by end of May, even 9.13.8 would be amazing!

LifeisHard73 · 08/05/2024 08:57

Ps I need to order a new pen. Are the there any codes please? My first was from VOY. I’m losing on 2.5 with no side effects except I’m tired, so should I stay in that or move up?

MountKilimounjaro · 08/05/2024 09:05

@MrsFlippers when you say you reinjected did you put a new needle on? It's so important that you don't reinject with the same needle...apologies if you knew this already but definitely worth mentioning as you can cause quite serious infections.

Not sure why the pen is leaking as it goes in, that sounds odd. Are you by any chance pushing down on the top as you jab?

I jab, push down on the top slowly all the way, once at the bottom, hold for a good ten seconds and then remove. There's often a tiny drop on my skin afterwards.

With MedExpress CONSULT-BLOOM works.

I think go up to the 5mg. Because if you feel like the 2.5mg stops working, you will be stuck. But you could get the 5mg and build up slowly.

OP posts:
ObsidianTree · 08/05/2024 09:08

@MrsFlippers was the needle twisted on correctly? Maybe you didn't screw it on to the pen properly?

I am not sure why it would leak. Maybe next dose if it leaks again, report to the pharmacy.

Dose wise, it could take until the 3rd dose to feel it's effects. Some just don't feel much until 5mg +

Hi

Im sure someone with much more experience than me will come along and answer but did you push the needle on until it clicked? The leakage doesn’t sound right at all.

As for appetite suppression I think it varies for all on 2.5mg. For me it last for about 4-5 days but I could definitely push through it if I wanted to, so part suppressed/part willpower but I’ve seen lots of people who like you don’t feel anything until they get to 5mg.

MrsFlippers · 08/05/2024 09:17

Thanks @LifeisHard73. I don't think it did click 😬I don't know what went wrong this morning. I followed the leaflet same as last week.

I think I might be one of the unfortunate ones who will have to wait til month 2 for some of the benefits. I shall persevere and take inspiration from this thread and try to get my will power engaged!

Concernedforthekids · 08/05/2024 10:00

@MrsFlippers you need to twist the needle onto the pen and wait for the click before removing the foil protecting you from the tip- I suggest this is where you went wrong

Also never re-insert a needle- you can make yourself ill and permanently disabled

AgathaMystery · 08/05/2024 10:07

Morning all. Another stall here…. Gah. I am JUST at 82kg (82.1) but really really want to get to the seventies before I leave for my holiday on the 24th. It’s looking less and less likely.

I could drink more but can’t eat any less. I’m not calorie counting but I really have such strong food aversion.

Any hints and tips gratefully received.

PrimalLass · 08/05/2024 10:15

Up the water and drop carbs as low as you can for 2 weeks?

lurkylurk · 08/05/2024 10:21

@AgathaMystery

I’d say just relax and don’t worry about hitting that target. This is a marathon rather than a sprint.

If you already know you’re in a deficit then just go with the flow, it will drop soon and the vagaries of water retention, having pooed or not, are not worth paying attention to or getting frustrated about.

Also, as far as holidays are concerned, normal weight people do eat and drink more in holidays too, back in older times there were feast times throughout the year, harvests, Christmas, summer fairs, thanksgiving etc. It’s normal to have those too.

I understand us, being overweight, feel it’s a getting out of control but it’s a normal part of life. I was normal weight almost all of my life and would not worry about it, have a great time and put on a couple of pounds at such times and usually lose it within a few weeks after without thinking much about it and that’s where I want to get back to.

I don’t usually put on more than a pound on holiday anyhow despite eating and drinking what I like as do so much walking, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking. I really just need to go live somewhere where there’s no processed food that’s warm by the sea and I’d get and stay slim forever!

BigBessie · 08/05/2024 10:22

Hello all . Not posted for a while , just been lurking (and liking!) for a couple of weeks. Am still loving this thread and how great everyone is doing.

NSV's for me:
-When I go to Spin class I can now do the aero riding position , which I couldn't before because my tummy was too big
-I have cracked open my bright coloured clothes and not wearing just black
-I am enjoying looking at clothes in shops once more ( not buying until I drop another dress size though)

Am treating myself to a pedicure this week as a treat , not a pizza or wine. Sorcery!

Week 7 (Injected this morning , 5mg)
SW : 13st 7
CW : 11st7
GW: 9st7
Average weight loss is 3.8 lbs a week

Am going to reorder this week and think I'll just stay on the 5mg for another month

Yes! Life is still there to be lived and we need to navigate that and enjoying ourselves too while making good choices.

@PrimalLass
If you don’t mind me asking, have you moved from Wegovy to Mounjaro? I remember seeing your username
on the Wegovy thread when I was looking into the whole subject. If so, how are
you finding the switch?

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 08/05/2024 10:44

I've taken my first dose of 7.5mg. Can't twist the pen to get the bonus dose of 5mg out (I managed it with the 2.5mg) but I'm eager to start shifting a bit faster so want to move up.

I've lost a stone since starting so coming off slowly but to be honest wine and a few takeaways have featured however eating a lot lot less and being more mindful and I'm back into my work trousers! Haven't fit into them since last year and I'd rather this be sustainable rather than cut out carbs, be over strict etc. 2lbs away from the next stone bracket.

I am nervous that they've got wise to it and starting reducing the amount in the pen !

livingwithpmdd · 08/05/2024 11:12

Just took my 4th dose last night in the thigh, not feeling any major side effects but the loss of food noise and appetite suppression happened almost immediately.

Not as big a loss as others at 3kg but NSV I've lost 4cm off my bust, waist and hips and 1.5 cm off my calf! Which I can't quite believe.

SW 114kg
CW 111kg
GW 75kg

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 08/05/2024 11:28

Some amazing NSV going on here!
Now it's warmer, I'm back in work clothes that I haven't worn for 6 months or so. Well, I'm back in some of them as most of them I can't get into. This shouldn't be a surprise as they were tight last time I wore them but I'd somehow forgotten.

GingerLemonTea · 08/05/2024 11:41

Week 4 and just feeling fed up with the low level nausea most of the time. The food noise is gone but feeling sick has replaced it. No downwards scale mvmt in about 9 days either so just feeling a bit fed up tho it’s early days.

Flapearedknave · 08/05/2024 11:42

As I'm away to genoa oh Friday, and a stone down, I'm going to be trying my smaller wardrobe today!

Wish me luck all, hoping some smaller clothes fit!

My work clothes are certainly a lot looser.

Congrats all on the continued losses, and wishing those who have stalled, a woosh soon.

Yes, but you know I’ll still be feeling the same on the run-up to my holiday in August too 😂
