Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

I'm also not getting enough protein and I'm struggling to see how within my 1200 calories.
I've got salmon for lunch and some greek yogurt so that will help, and a high protein ready meal (because Friday is pizza night so I'm opting out). But even that won't come anywhere close to my 115g protein.

Edited

I have ditched my usual breakfasts and now have a protein shake and a protein bar mid morning instead of breakfast. So that's 35g protein for around 300 calories.

susiedaisy1912 · 12/04/2024 10:07

Turkey has a huge amount of protein in and very little fat.

Wonkypictureframe · 12/04/2024 10:13

Prawns also. A pack of prawns (150g) has 20g of protein and 90 calories. You can snack on them.

Hi, I had my 4th 2.5 dose a day early as I was hungry but have managed to go the extra day this week to get back onto Friday jabs and it hasn't been an issue. It may be because of it building up in me a bit, or it may be because this is the first week I've actually tracked food and ate well which I'm sure reduces cravings and balances blood sugar too.
I'm taking the extra 2.5mg today then will start 5mg early like Weds if I feel I need to, or a day late because I'm working all day next Saturday and can't risk side effects....I'm a marriage celebrant so I can't really nip out of the ceremonies!

So if I took my 3rd dose of 2.5 yesterday (Thurs), I could take the 4th dose of 2.5 early on Tues or Wed, and then take the extra 5th dose with another needle next Fri? Would that be okay or too much too soon? (The following Fri I would start 5g pen)

NCfor24 · 12/04/2024 10:23

Thanks for all the protein ideas! It's such a change of mindset.

I saw these in B&M...are these good? 22g protein for less than 100cal.

4th and 5th might be a bit close. I'd be inclined to try and go to the Friday without one in-between, I think, unless you feel you need it.

AppleCherryBlossom · 12/04/2024 10:26

Thanks for the new thread @ObsidianTree . Everyone here is so supportive and helpful. I have finished my first week on 2.5 and have lost 5lbs.
The food noise/cravings started to creep back in yesterday so was definitely ready for the second injection.
I have also managed to lose half a stone simply by going to the gp. Their scales have me 7lbs lighter than my ones at home 😂. I'll stick with mine for weigh in continuity, but it was a nice surprise.

lurkylurk · 12/04/2024 10:27

@NCfor24
Yes, they are pretty much what I ordered, thanks for letting me know they have it in B and M, love that place. Let us know if they're nice!

ObsidianTree · 12/04/2024 10:29

I'm with you on the struggling to get the protein in. I also find it hard to fit over 100g protein in and stick around 1200 kcals!

I have found I am forcing myself to finish the meat/protein I have on my plate to make sure I get the protein in, even if I'm stuffed full!

I am taking the protein drink and the collagen drink each day and that wacks on about 40g protein. This is really the main way I am getting some extra protein in! I have bought some protein bars too so will attempt to add that in for 3 extra protein sources a day. I also got some nature valley peanut and choc bars which say are high in protein they are about 10g so they are pretty good. But near 200 kcals each!

I found some high protein bagel thins in Aldi, so going to have a cream cheese and salmon protein bagel later! Hope that adds some super protein today 🤣 (thanks to whoever recommended the protein bagels last thread!)

OP posts:
lurkylurk · 12/04/2024 10:32

@ObsidianTree
I've had the protein thins from Aldi and the Warburtons protein bagel thins. Both have a slightly "chewier" texture than normal bread, but the Warburtons ones are nicer, although also more expensive! I buy them on offer and freeze them.

Day two of my second dose of 2.5. I feel really ill. I have had an ibuprofen, upped my protein and taken some dioralyte. I have a huge headache, feel really hungry (this was surprised last week.) I feel like I'm not on it at all.

Not sure what else I can do though. Will just keep going.

NoMoreCoffeePlease · 12/04/2024 10:43

Today is my third injection of 2.5 mg, and I've lost 1.6 kg this week.
Total weight loss in 2 weeks is 3.5 kg.

I've cancelled Juniper and have received a full refund, as I didn't think the dietary advice was tailored to people who are already active and eating healthily.

I hope it won't be difficult to get a 5 mg prescription from another provider! (I am on one of the 'banned' meds from medexpress and can't order from them, but the Juniper chemist didn't see any issues).

@NoMoreCoffeePlease
Try The Family Chemist, their prices are similar to MedExpress, MedExpress tend to work on a "one size fits all" basis and have screening procedures that use AI, so they're not so tailored to the individual and they can end up rejecting people for unnecessary reasons.

I had a doctors appointment before I started MJ and he said that they will only prescribe on the NHS after 3 other (tablet) options haven't helped. He also said they were hoping that wegovy, mounjaro etc would be approved for weightloss in the Autumn but they will only be prescribed via tier 3 services so GP's won't be able to do it. Who knows if it will actually happen though!!! I've requested to go on the tier 3 list but I'm hoping that by Autumn I'll know longer meet the criteria 🤞x

This is interesting - I am actually on week 42 of the tier 3 system... wonder if it's worth going back to my GP about this.

lurkylurk · 12/04/2024 11:00

For anyone wanting to change suppliers when their BMI is below 30, I know some had concern about this, I'm sure many of the pharmacies would do this but just wanted to let anyone know that I asked this specific question of The Family Pharmacy and they said they would be able to take someone on if their BMI was under 30 so long as they can see evidence of previous prescriptions and so long as if the person had stopped taking it they hadn't been off the drug for 1 month or longer.

lurkylurk · 12/04/2024 11:01

I just wanted to know there was a back up in case of any shortages or issues at my current one!

  • Tofu (any type really) - 17G Protein for 100 gram
  • EatLean cheese (and their Lidl clone) - 11 grams of protein for a 30 gram portion

Help - in really struggling with symptoms headache and cold im not sure if I'm just actually ill or if this is a side affect of the injections. Last night I ended up going to bed early as I was aching all over but I have had this for 3 weeks now. Confused

On the positive I managed to get into some jeans I had bought in feb that were not stretchy Jeggings. They are size 18 so still massive but made me feel like I've made some progress these last two weeks Grin

lurkylurk · 12/04/2024 11:11

@noclouds
Are you eating regularly to make sure your blood sugar doesn't fall too much and cause headaches?

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 12/04/2024 11:22

Started week 5 (week 1 on 5mg) yesterday. Felt really nauseous all day. Stayed the same weight this morning as last week and whilst slightly disappointed, I haven't actually had the best week food/drink wise. A lot of wine has featured so I should be pleased really.

Wasn't entirely sure of starting weight but I'm putting it down to about half a stone loss since starting. Really going to knuckle down this month on the 5mg so get into the next stone bracket and try and reduce my carb heavy diet to see if that shifts things a bit faster, and give up the wine!

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 12/04/2024 11:24

Oh and water! Been really rubbish on the water front so must try harder.

noclouds · 12/04/2024 11:35

@lurkylurk

Not really as don't feel I can stomach much. I woke up at 10 today and had a banana at 11 and generally I've been having a banana for breakfast and nuts for lunch with a normal dinner. Im supposed to take the children swimming later but im not sure I will manage it
