Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

For anyone wanting to change suppliers when their BMI is below 30, I know some had concern about this, I'm sure many of the pharmacies would do this but just wanted to let anyone know that I asked this specific question of The Family Pharmacy and they said they would be able to take someone on if their BMI was under 30 so long as they can see evidence of previous prescriptions and so long as if the person had stopped taking it they hadn't been off the drug for 1 month or longer.

This should have read The Family Chemist, not Pharmacy!

Soukmyfalafel · 12/04/2024 18:10

Checking in. Can't believe it is thread 5 already. I'm on 5mg 2 days in. Injected into thigh as I was worried about side effects going up a dose, but today is the first day I really felt lots of appetite suppression, although I am still managing to do ok with calories.

I did have a small portion of curry for dinner last night and a coffee this morning, which made a reappearance! I have to be careful on the spicy food.

I'm sleep deprived because of my son, but managed a walk in the sun after work with him. It's a nice day here and whilst I feel crap because I'm tired it was lovely. I hope the sunshine perks me up a bit because I have PMT and feel like I'm waiting forever for my period! I've normally felt quite happy on MJ but this week has been tough because of PMT.

21 pounds off after seven weeks, so you're inching ahead of me 😊

Apologies if this has been covered in a previous thread but can I ask if there is anyone who has been on Mounjaro for a while and also has an autoimmune condition? I will primarily be taking it for weight loss but I also have psoriasis. I’ve read that diabetic patients with psoriasis taking Mounjaro have seen really good results but I am not diabetic. I’d be very interested to know if anyone with psoriasis or any other autoimmune condition has noticed an improvement in their symptoms?

Edited

I think there has been reports on the odd post.

My low level psoriasis has improved, but not cleared up.

Very good progress.

Are you sticking 9n 5 or plan to move up to 7.5 when it's available?

I'm happy on 5, so plan to keep on it while I have this result.

I had the joy of moving house recently and the stress knocked off a few extra pounds.

Interesting. I was thinking recently that my psoriasis had reduced.

Interesting listen for anyone worrying about getting enough protein https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001xzrx?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Wow I found this really interesting. I think I need to get my protein from natural sources rather than shakes....I just need to be able to eat a bit more! Thanks for sharing that @Thebaldprimadonna

Glad the move is over. Always so exhausting!

@Soukmyfalafel I had a fairly spicy meal last night, not a big portion but I have felt 'off' all day and can't really face eating anything at all. As I was drifting off to sleep last night I kept being awoken by overwhelming bouts of nausea. I won't be having anything spicy again for a while! I also just had a glorious walk in this evening sunshine. I managed to log off from work at 5:30 and get out. I feel much better for it!

I am okay with spicy but not fatty. I had deep 'samosa regret' a couple of weeks ago.

On holiday and got a very small portion of chippy chips. The heartburn for the next day was immense

KeepingUndercover · 12/04/2024 18:47

Spicy is fine for me, buttery and rich is bad. Which is good as we do a lot of Mexican type food.

On protein, I think some of the suggestions for amounts to eat bandied around are just really hard to achieve. I think it's one of those areas where good intentions can tip into obsessiveness. So I'm trying to make sure I do get protein, but there is no way I'm going to get that 1g per kg of whatever the suggestion was in. I do like the "eat a varied diet, mostly plants" approach to food for simplicity.

Yes, the dose is 0.6mls - you have 2x bonus doses!

Yes. I have upped myself to 5mg in any case. I wasn’t going to but I have plateaued for 9 days so seemed sensible at this point.

it was also way way easier to inject with the 1ml syringe than the pen.

Got an absolute desperate thirst.

Soukmyfalafel · 12/04/2024 19:42

I'm watching masterchef right now and the food looks lovely, but it's weird feeling like if it was in front of me, I probably couldn't eat much of it. 😂

@Thebaldprimadonna Bless you. Loving the phrase "samosa regret".

I am fine with not eating in a morning, even if I am exercising. It's ok for me to be a bit hungry.

But at bedtime, it's a different story. I can't cope with being hungry then. I usually have some baked crisps and light Philadelphia. And then regret it!

I need to take a different approach. Different food. Maybe a hot chocolate instead so it feels like a treat. Am thinking about it.

Ideas welcome for something before bed. Or for being told to suck it up and crack on!!!

April88 · 12/04/2024 19:52

If doing the 5mg closer together, how many days do we leave in between? Was thinking 5?

On previous diet attempts I used to find a milky drink in evening filling and helped eg options made with milk.

Investinmyself · 12/04/2024 20:04

The leaflet recommends low fat and bland. I definitely don't think I could stomach anything greasy or fatty. Just cooked some chips for husband and wasn't tempted at all.
The not fancying stuff is odd. I barely bought anything in supermarket this week as nothing was jumping out.

Are you actually hungry or is it just a habit you've got into, do you think? If it's just a habit, then you could try something like a herbal tea before bed. If you're actually hungry, go with what you have but plan for it so it's not "extra" calories. Maybe swap the crisps for some carrot sticks so you get more veg in you. You could have them with hummus too. Or apple slices with a measured amount of nut butter is nice.

ChristmasLightsLover · 12/04/2024 20:34

@KeepingUndercover Yes! Carrots and Philadelphia. Or cucumber and hummus. That would work.

Just had a hot chocolate. Felt nice. Warmed me up too. Shower and early night soon as am out on a long walk first thing tomorrow.

@KeepingUndercover Thank you for the reply. I am thinking about whether I am hungry or it's habit. When I go to shower soon I'm going to have a fancy body scrub as a treat. Means I'm not eating before bed but feel some kind of nourished? If that makes sense. Sorry. A bit waffly.
