Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Official weigh in today. Took my first official 5mg dose last night and feel rough! Could sleep for 10 hours and have a headache :(
So I've lost 1 stone in 6 weeks. And that includes a 10 day all inclusive holiday so I'm over the moon!

I'm short so only had about 2.5 stone to lose. Almost half way. All going well I should see a 10 on my scales for the first time in forever.

ObsidianTree · 16/04/2024 10:21

Well done @NCfor24 and @CiderJabs ☺️

@CiderJabs Wow, nearly halfway, that's fantastic! Especially including the holiday.

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 10:40

CiderJabs · 16/04/2024 10:10

@MelissaLouRocks are you drinking protein shakes? I sometimes add things to it and use a hand blender. I've tried strawberries / kiwis on a chocolate shake and it was lovely.
Failing that I like spinach / avocado (to thicken it up instead of banana), lemon / lime and a bit of sweetener

Yes I do, thanks @CiderJabs, but with the collagen, chia seeds, flax in my shake, I'd struggle getting anymore in there!

The spinach/avocado combo sounds good though, thank you. 😊

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 10:41

That's fabulous @CiderJabs !

I find the apples help with the taste. If initially you find it too celery, add another apple!

I am going to get the ingredients and make this too ☺️

Wow great losses @NCfor24 and @CiderJabs you must be over the moon!

Since getting my digital scales I can see I’m dropping by 0.25/ 0.5 lbs a day… MJ is so easy and effective for me, it’s a revelation. I feel great and am getting plenty of food and protein. I don’t feel deprived and I’m still enjoying food.

It’s the 8th injection for me today and my loss is sitting at 22lbs 🙌I really can’t believe it!

I can swivel my wedding rings now and all the aches and pains in my legs and feet are gone. I used to be like an older person every morning hobbling around as my feet would be so stiff. Now I spring out of bed! Haven’t felt like this since my 20s.

I’m only just realising how being obese has affected my quality of life… it’s so tiring and draining on my body - not to mention damaging my mental health. I know there are plenty of fit and active plus size women out there- I just wasn’t one of them as I had no energy.

I’m so excited about the future now!

MendaciousMabel · 16/04/2024 10:56

Hey everyone! I got my mounjaro starter dose yesterday, terrified to start it though! Did anyone find it better to inject in the mornings or the evenings, wondering if I do evening I might sleep through side effects?

encouraging to hear how much people have lost though. I’m starting at 99kg and need to be down to around 68kg ideally.

NCfor24 · 16/04/2024 10:58

@WannabeHealthier the positive outlook is amazing! What a great future we will all have now!

These will be fine. Please note, because the needles are longer, you need to inject at a 45 degree angle or less to avoid the muscle. This is very important, as Mounjaro is absorbed by the outer layer of fat tissue.

For anyone looking for electrolytes without sweeteners, gums, colourings, anti caking agents and various other crap, these are excellent. Not the cheapest initially, but only half a teaspoon a day so lasts over 3 months, and you can't detect at all in a bit of juice.

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 16/04/2024 11:23

Hey. I'm in work and I keep getting waves of nausea, as if I've only just had my injection - but I had it last Thurs! I would love to have some salty crackers or something, but I don't have any here. Will have to bring some to keep in my desk drawer if this happens again!

Am still weighing daily and so far have only gained weight this week. It's annoying but I know it cannot be fat as I'm meticulously counting everything I eat in mfp, and I've had 100g or more protein per day. My fancy scales say some of it is muscle (I have been strength training) and some of it is fat-free body weight - whatever that is. poo? My weekly weigh in is not for a couple of days so we'll see what happens between now and then. Maybe I just need to go up to 5mg or 7.5 to see consistency.

congrats on the losses @CiderJabs and @NCfor24 !

RagzRebooted · 16/04/2024 11:30

@JanetSnakeholeMacklin I had this last week. Did my dose Monday but Thursday and Friday I was really nauseous.

Investinmyself · 16/04/2024 12:33

I’ve been staying same for several days but think it’s not enough water. So a good reminder to drink.

Electrolytes are salts and minerals, like sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate which are found in our blood, and help to conduct electrical impulses in the body. They play an essential role in the nervous system, keeping you hydrated, contracting muscles, and regulating the pH system.

You really don't need them.

They should not be drunk casually, like squash - in fact, they can be really harmful if used like that. They are for high performing athletes or people who have had a really bad stomach bug. I don't know why anyone is taking them on here TBH.

Because it's been shown the slow down of gastric emptying, and very limited food some people are able to eat, can have detrimental effects as not everyone is absorbing everything they need. It's obviously a personal choice, related to what you know to be your own circumstances. Also, the amount of water many of us are drinking doesn't help, as that flushes electrolytes we do have out of the body.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but what exactly are the benefits of going to 5mg from 2.5mg? I already have complete appetite suppression. Will it do anything positive?

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 13:19

Just wanted to add, I'm only aware of this as my daughter is a biomedical scientist.

Oh my gosh @NoMoreCoffeePlease I was literally about to ask this. I've got my third dose of 2.5mg to take today. I'm 7lbs down in two weeks, I have strong appetite suppression for nearly all of the week, tails off slightly on the last day. I'm thinking I'll stay on 2.5mg but was keen to know if anyone else had....
