Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@ObsidianTree my water intake is not great. Excellent point, I'll definitely make sure I increase. Thanks for the reminder.

...and thanks for keeping these great threads running. I've gleaned so much good and sensible advice.

WannabeHealthier · 16/04/2024 07:59

@MountKilimounjaro I wonder if you need to eat more? Sounds like your body has gone into starvation mode to me. Ideally we should be eating 1200 calories minimum for safe weight loss. The fast 800 has a 12 week maximum in place for eating 800 calories per day as it’s unsafe to do long term. I hope the 5mg works for you

MeAndMounjaro · 16/04/2024 08:05

Weigh Day!

Wk1 - 6.2lbs

SW - 15st8.6
CW - 15st0.2
Height 5'6
Lowest ever weight - 10st3
GW - could I really get to 8st10!!!?!!!

Comes with a huge caveat that I was away just before I started MJ so the sudden cut back of calories and carbs will have taken about 3lbs of water weight off easily but I've never lost so much in one week!

Nonetheless I'm pleased! It felt most effect on Days 3&4, I'm hoping to feel that more days as the dose builds in my body/I titrate up.

Dare I say it...no side effects. Taking Holland & Barratt Aloe Vera gentle colon cleanser from Day One.

@WannabeHealthier I'll definitely be increasing my intake after 12 weeks. My comment earlier about 7 months was just an extrapolation, sometimes it feels like you have to go to extremes forever to get results. I'm hoping I can reset my mindset as well my eating!

RagzRebooted · 16/04/2024 08:41

@WannabeHealthier I'm 5'10", started at almost 17.5 stone. My goal is also around 12 stone, or slightly under. I look good at that weight so would be happy with that.

lurkylurk · 16/04/2024 09:04

@MountKilimounjaro
I was going to say, it sounds like it could be a water retention issue. I've found weight can go up and down quite a lot on Mounajro as it seems to affect water retention. It has a dehydrating effect and that will make your body retain water unless you drink more of it. You will be losing fat, just can't see it on the scales.

lurkylurk · 16/04/2024 09:05

@Sabblue
That should read CONSULT-BUNNY. Try BIRTHDAY-BUNNY too, that gave me a bigger discount than the consult one recently.

I'm on my fourth 2.5mg dose, due to take 5mg on Thursday.

It worked instantly for me, complete appetite suppression and the silencing of the food noise (I never really realised it was there until it was gone, so bizarre). Symptoms have been very mild.

The added bonus has been that it seems to have given me so much energy. I've never felt so clear headed.

BUT I've lost a mere 2lbs in a month. I eat between 800 and 1,000 calories a day (following the principals of the Blood Sugar Diet). Lots of protein and no heavily processed foods, no sugar, no alcohol. I'm tracking very carefully so know I'm not under estimating.

I have about five stone to lose so it all feels a bit daunting.

I'm going to keep plodding on but it's really disheartening.

I think you may not be eating enough. Find a TDEE calculator, then eat 500 calories per day less than your BMR basal metabolic rate. If as you say you have a lot to lose, eating those calories will scare you body into thinking it can't function at that level, and it will hold onto everything it can. Good luck.

Oh wow we really are twins! I’m quite curvy underneath so I think 12 stone will look good (it used to anyway!). I’m only worried about my face ageing as I’m over 40

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 09:20

Welcome all newcomers, and congrats everyone on your losses, I'm struggling to keep up there are so many of us now!

Thank your for the Facebook request @ObsidianTree, I take that as a huge compliment. 😊

You may have to let me know what I need to do though, as I'm a mod virgin so to speak. 😂

pinktransit · 16/04/2024 09:25

2nd pen ordered today - used FINAL20-BLOOM for £30 off.

It's Week 3, day 6, and as usual on day 6 I'm feeling quite hungry. Still trying for a late breakfast and then an early dinner, with fruit as a snack in between.

Official weigh in day is Thurs, hoping for a bit of a loss by then. Currently 2.2lb down after 2 weeks.

Due to the weather yesterday I didn't walk, and had gone over my calorie goal for the day. I'm on a goal of 1200, and usually 'gain' an extra calorie allowance of 500 - 1000 in exercise, so can go over to around 1400 and still be under. Put my food into Nutracheck, and I was 200 calories over. It takes a lot of hula hooping to use 200 cal!!

@pinktransit was the discount on medexpress? And what hula hoop you are using? 😃 the weight one? Thanks

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 09:35

I LOVE my weighted hula hoop, it's one of the few things I can do with my disability.

Sabblue · 16/04/2024 09:30

@Sabblue : Sorry, yes, should have said medexpress.
I have 2 hula hoops, a 900g weighted one, and a standard one. The standard has a larger diameter and is MUCH easier! I was alternating between them while watching Vera. 😀
I do find it's a good way of getting my step count up if I've not walked much.

MelissaLouRocks · 16/04/2024 10:06

I'm finding I'm struggling to have enough room to fit in my fruit and veg alongside my protein. Therefore, I've decided I'll just have that as a juice everyday.

Can anyone recommend any good tasty recipes including green veg such as spinach and broccoli?

No bananas please! 😂

CiderJabs · 16/04/2024 10:10

@MelissaLouRocks are you drinking protein shakes? I sometimes add things to it and use a hand blender. I've tried strawberries / kiwis on a chocolate shake and it was lovely.
Failing that I like spinach / avocado (to thicken it up instead of banana), lemon / lime and a bit of sweetener

ObsidianTree · 16/04/2024 10:14

I noticed today that Asda have updated their stock info for 7.5mg. Saying it will be available towards end of the month.

I took my extra week 5 dose of 2.5mg last Friday but didn't feel anything and had a hungrier weekend. I had no clue how much I'd taken though. After asking on here I decided not to take the first 5mg too soon due to side effects risk so that will be taken Saturday evening.
However last night I checked my 2.5mg pen and there appeared to be a little left, so I topped up.
Oh my gosh! The crazy dreams last night! I felt like I was awake all night because I was so bloody busy in this weird dreamworld!
Anyway, got the cold from the inside out feeling today so I definitely got a dose, and I really doubt I got much on Friday at all.

My lowest weight since I began this morning too...down 10lb in 4.5 weeks. Official weigh in is Friday though.

ObsidianTree · 16/04/2024 10:18

That's a good idea @MelissaLouRocks

I have been thinking about juicing too.

One of my many failed diets was a juicing diet once! Still have the fancy juicer!

I think green juice was pretty nice. Can remember the recipe 🤣 ill Google it
