Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Tried the clear whey protein powder today and it was nice! I had a peach tea flavoured one and it wasn't too sweet (don't like too much sweetness) and was quite tangy which is refreshing. It felt much lighter than drinking a creamy protein shake, more like drinking a glass of peach iced tea.

I just wish it was sweetened with Stevia rather than Sucralose as my stomach has a bit of an objection to Sucralose and I prefer the more natural sweetener, I will see if I can find one that's Stevia. I prefer to get nutrients from real food but it's a good option if feeling a bit off and don't want to eat much.

A lot of my recipes are made up by me and I also cook a lot of food from around the world like Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Brazilian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Caribbean so we'll see. I'll be surprised if it's got Moqueca or Pad Mee Korat in there but you never know!

Useful for the everyday stuff and the barcode scanner though anyway, and as you say I can always store recipes once I've put them in and tweak them if I change them.

It can do you a few Gousto and Simply Cook moqueca but not an autogenerate recipe, and no luck on the Pad Mee Korat sadly.

I cook a lot from scratch too, I tend not to bother with recipes down to the fine detail and stick with the more calorific bits and rough amounts of veg so I can feel good about getting my portions in. Life is too short to track spices! Hopefully you'll be able to find all the ingredients at least. I've been impressed with the barcode scanner, it even picked up my veg box company barcodes which I wasn't sure it would.

lurkylurk · 13/04/2024 14:08

@KeepingUndercover

Yeah, the main bulk ingredients are the most important, can always just add on a few more calories for the rest without bothering to enter every teaspoon of oregano!

It sounds good, I'm going to give it a try as managed to gain this week 😬

MelissaLouRocks · 13/04/2024 14:09

@ObsidianTree that's really spooky, was literally just looking at that site! First I put in 2.5mg every 7 days for first 4 weeks, followed by 5 then 7.5 to make 12 week graph if that makes sense? Then I did exactly the same but made it every 6 days instead of 7, and the level rose hugely considering 1 day difference. I'll try to add the pics.

I’m 7 weeks in and I still feel hungry throughout the day- that’s normal. I just eat… eg I had a coffee and small porridge for breakfast.

I’m starting to feel hungry so shall have a bagel soon (going for salmon and cream cheese inspired by PPs). I shall have fruit too.

Smaller portions of protein and nutritionally dense foods satisfy me and I don’t overeat.

But I never feel ravenous like I do on other restrictive diets. I think that’s the difference.

Edited

That’s exactly how it’s working for me. The hangry ravenous has gone.
I’m on 5mg but am able to eat a small meal and be satisfied.
@Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis If you are hungry on walking eat, ideally protein based. You should find a protein yoghurt and a few berries or a protein smoothie will fill you nicely whereas before you’d be needing a snack after a few hours. Lunch I’ve been having soup. In past I’d have needed soup plus something else.

I love the lemon one, can't bear strawberry anything. 😷

Investinmyself · 13/04/2024 14:16

I use the build recipe in nutracheck. I’m finding I’m eating more repetitively as it seems to be suiting my body on mj so copy to another meal occasion is also useful.
The good bite and Fraser Reynolds protein recipe books have a barcode to scan on the page.

ChristmasLightsLover · 13/04/2024 16:52

Today is my third injection at 5.i think Im going to stick at 5 for another month. Im still losing weight and I know that it's on me to make better choices.

I did my weigh in this morning.

SW 125 KG
CW 116.6 KG

A bit meh about this week as I've only lost 0.4 of a KG. But I have eaten chocolate, more food than usual and have had a period.

On previous diets I would have been straight to the chippy. Today I've done 5.5 miles of walking g with a mate. And then slept for three hours! Am just going with it.

Cheeseismyfavourite · 13/04/2024 16:59

Hi everyone, I’ve just ordered my first dose from Bolt today.
i’m really hoping that this will be the start of a new me.
I've just come back from a weeks all inclusive holiday and weighed myself and I weigh 14st 1. I hate all the photos of me from the holiday and I just felt fat and gross all week and I just don’t feel like myself anymore, I’ve started avoiding people socially as I don’t want them to see me and think god she’s got big.
I weighed 10st in 2019 then the pandemic hit and I put a few stone on gradually over lockdown, then I had a baby in 2022 got gestational diabetes that wasn’t diagnosed until last minute and the weight has just creeped up. I feel like once I hit a certain point I felt so rubbish about myself I just binged and it all got out of control. I desperately need something to help me, I just don’t know what’s going on as I was always able to keep my weight within decent limits but I am just so out of control at the moment, I’m 42 so perhaps it’s my age bit I don’t want my daughter to grow up seeing me struggle with my weight so it all stops here.
Does anyone know how long Bolt takes to approve the order? I never thought I’d be so keen to stab a needle in my leg

lurkylurk · 13/04/2024 17:16

@Cheeseismyfavourite

Apart from having a baby in the last couple of years and my being 48 rather than 42 I could have written your post myself!

In 2019 I was 10 and a half stone would sometimes go up to about 10 st. 11 (I'm 5'7") and had been around that weight, no more than half a stone lighter since my early twenties. Could always keep tabs on it but didn't have to much. Had put on a few more pounds as got older but that's about it, was always a healthy BMI. Put on weight over lockdown and then just couldn't seem to lose any. I'd never in my life had more than 7-10 pounds to lose and it seemed like once it went past a certain point it just got out of control and then I gave up trying. Have tried various diets since to no avail.

I also hated my holiday photos the last couple of years and have avoided social situations, especially with anyone I haven't seen in a while because I know what they'll be thinking, not even in a mean way, they'll just be surprised, as I was always the one that stayed fairly slim, even through pregnancies etc.

I just really want to feel and look like myself again!

ObsidianTree · 13/04/2024 17:16

It sounds like your weight has piled on over the last 4 years- so quickly on/ quickly off I would guess, you will probably find it a lot easier to maintain than others like me who have been obese for nearly a decade.

Good luck- I’m sure you’ll be thrilled once the pounds start rolling off. Hopefully you won’t get any bad side effects- most people on here seem to be fine.

When I ordered with Bolt i did the order Friday lunchtime. Fri afternoon they sent me a mail asking for photos which I sent within the hour. They don't dispatch on weekends so it wasn't dispatched till Monday.

So in terms of working days it was less than one working day from order to dispatch. Check your emails regularly on Monday morning.

Am I mad or is jaw clenching a thing? My head is pounding and I’ve drunk 4 pints of squash today. Normally I’d drink that much in a week!!

Thank you for replying i’m so glad i’m not the only one in this boat. I also bounced back after babies 1 and 2 I’m not sure what happened with number 3

I’m the same it all just feels like too much work so all my diets have failed. My lovely hubby doesn’t help as he keeps telling me I’m not fat despite having a BMI of 32.

I absolutely stuffed my face this week on holiday as I felt so awful about myself which just doesn’t make sense to me

I also don’t want to go into the menopause being overweight I know it doesn’t help and I can’t take HRT due to family health history

yes it has the pandemic has a lot to answer for (and me too)

I hope it will come off and stay off so they say that it takes a certain amount of time for habits to form so hopefully this will be a good reset for you (and me)

For some reason I said I was 5'7", I'm not I'm 5'8" and my BMI was also 32 (32.2) when I started a couple of weeks ago (31.5 now), so pretty much exactly the same. I think my husband definitely considers I'm fat😂he's very fit and trim, he's a builder. Although my daughters insist I'm not. By the way, cheese is also my favourite!
