Continuing Mounjaro...part 5

1000 replies

ObsidianTree · 11/04/2024 22:11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system.

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :
www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.14201.pdf

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. Ask for suggestions of sites /types to buy.

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day. There are protein supplements you can take. Myprotein have a good range. Ask for a referral code if you want to buy some.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

  • MedExpress - £149.99 - Sometimes there are codes that can be used for a discount. Ask for a code on here or do a Google search to try and find one.
  • Voy - £114.99 for first month then £229 after. Need a referral code (ask on here for one if needed)
  • The Family Chemist -£149
  • Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 for 5mg
  • Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. Or starter pack with 2.5mg and 5mg pen £319
  • Asda £184
  • Boots £219
  • Chemist4U £179
  • Pharmacy2u
  • Superdrug
There other other sellers, we don't have them all listed

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Welcome!
I noticed the dry mouth within a few hours as well.

Umeboshiune · 13/04/2024 12:00

Whew. I finally have my 2.5mg first pack nearly a week after ordering (Royal Mail stuff ups) and can’t wait to get started!

This is quite interesting with lots of recommendations. It contradicts my PT’s authoritative view! But also does say that capsules aren’t much good before going on to recommend some. 🤔But lots of possible options to consider.

My gastro clinic actually originally mentioned collagen to me, as I've had many gynae surgeries that have caused major adhesions and affected my gastro/bowel function. They actually recommended the powdered one and it's helped me enormously, so I'll stick with what I know works for me. They did say the capsules were pretty much a waste of money.

I sometimes forget about the dry mouth, but this is something I get soon after injection. I don't mind it too much as I drink lots because of it

@Femeia drink plenty of water today and eat well. Then weigh again tomorrow.

As a previously obsessive weigher when dieting I have noticed that a more processed meal can add a lb or more to my weight. I think one of the main reasons is salt which makes me retain water but it could also be carbs, preservatives etc. You know over the course of a week you are a calorie deficit. It's just that the day you ate the most non diet food was yesterday.

I have also found from working at home in the summer and weighing every toilet visit that between getting up and 11am I can lose over a lb just from weeing even though I have drunk coffee. I don't often eat breakfast. The point in the day where I weigh least is right before lunch.

rainbowsandinfinitesparkles · 13/04/2024 12:07

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 08:24

Can I ask how you dodge a big meal with people who don't know? I have a family member coming later who wants a takeaway. Luckily it's chinese (and not pizza) so I can go for something lighter, but I'm worried I won't be shovelling it in my gob as usual. I think I might get sussed out this evening. Nothing gets past this person and she will be horrified I'm using jabs, as in her mind I'm not fat (even though I was on the cusp of being obese). She is bigger than I was, but happy with her weight and this will be 'cheating'.

Your getting over a bug or trying to eat healthier would be what I would use depending on the person asking.

Femeia · 13/04/2024 12:16

Thanks for the support everyone, it's really helping my mindset (we all know it - the one that says fuck it, I might as well eat badly today as eating well did nothing). I'm just relaxing at home today after a busy week so am going to drink tonnes of water and hopefully wee all the extra weight out!
I hope everyone has a lovely Saturday and the scales are kind to us all.

Choux · 13/04/2024 12:16

@RadFs I don't think that was from an app. Someone found it on another forum perhaps. But if you read the patient leaflet (I think) it says that Mounjaro has a half life of 5 days so 5 days after a 2.5mg jab, 1.25mg is still in your system. Then 5 days later again 0.625 of the first injection is still in your system. Plus a chunk of the 2nd jab.

So the Mounjaro slowly builds up in your system and this increases as you move up to stronger doses. As illustrated by the graph.

That's why it's best to wait till near the end of a pen before deciding whether to move up to the next pen as you may start to get side effects in week 3 or 4 that you didn't have with the first dose.

WannabeHealthier · 13/04/2024 12:17

Week 7 weigh in for me and I have lost 20.5 lbs in total- Amazing compared to previous diets/ lifestyle changes.

SW 16st 9lbs
CW 15st 2.5lbs

It does feel like the weight is falling off me and it’s low effort. Sure I have to log all my food/drink and make healthy choices including maximising protein- but it’s made easy by MJ. I’m very much still enjoying my food- just in moderation.

I am aiming to consume 80g protein daily- I go over to 90 but can’t achieve 100 without taking powders or UPF which I don’t want to do. MFP recommends 70g and I always hit this target so happy with that.

I had been eating 1470 calories a day (target and I usually meet it) but MFP has just dropped it to 1400 due to the weight lost. Definitely not starving myself and still able to eat socially with planning and thought.

RadFs · 13/04/2024 12:18

Hi all. Just started Mounjaro this week Wednesday - starting weight is 96.4 kg. Quite a lot of belching for 2 days. My weight on the 2nd day was about 97. I don’t seem to be getting hungry I’m not sure if this is due to mounjaro or because ive recently been fasting so my body is used to not eating.

Choux · 13/04/2024 12:20

@Soukmyfalafel if anyone asks if you are on the injections (as other family members have used them) just answer either a question 'no but if this diet doesn't work I might consider them. Do you think they help? Is Susie still using them?' They will then be likely to rant about Susie than keep questioning you.

Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis · 13/04/2024 12:56

I had my first dose 2.5mg last night. I actually work up hungry 😥

KeepingUndercover · 13/04/2024 13:02

@Wasitalwaysgoingtobelikethis waking up hungry is completely normal! This really isn't meant to make you never feel hungry again. It may take a little while for the affects to kick in, but even then feeling hungry in the morning is fine. I think it's good to feel hungry in fact as it gives a chance to manage those feelings well and plan good food habits that hopefully can be sustained long term.

As you go on you should find that when you do feel hungry you then end up feeling full a lot faster when you eat. But it can take time.

I’m 7 weeks in and I still feel hungry throughout the day- that’s normal. I just eat… eg I had a coffee and small porridge for breakfast.

I’m starting to feel hungry so shall have a bagel soon (going for salmon and cream cheese inspired by PPs). I shall have fruit too.

Smaller portions of protein and nutritionally dense foods satisfy me and I don’t overeat.

But I never feel ravenous like I do on other restrictive diets. I think that’s the difference.

Ironinglady2024 · 13/04/2024 13:12

@ObsidianTree well done on your losses.
@Femeia your losses have been amazing, don’t be disheartened. A swoosh will be coming your way.
@MelissaLouRocks some great stuff to get me to look into re collagen. Will have a proper read when I get home. I am clueless about it all.
Trying to quickly catch up as it’s moving so fast here.

CiderJabs · 13/04/2024 13:16

Those of you taking collagen powder - how thick is it? I'm scared it will make me gag if my coffee turns into jelly 🤮

What's the best marine powder that doesn't require remortgaging the house?

How much have you lost in the 7 weeks? I have tried so many weight loss methods in the past and have always failed. Think I am apprehensive now 😪

I am not sure! The image was posted on an earlier thread. Can't remember by whom!

If it's the graph showing the half-life it was me, I got it from Reddit, it wasn't from an app, just someone did the maths and made a graph.

This is one of the things I'm having to retrain my brain with. I always worry that responding to hunger will lead to a binge, but I'm slowly learning that on MJ, I can have something to eat and then stop. My stomach understands but my brain is still catching up.

@lurkylurk Nutracheck has this function where you put in the name of what you're making and it will autogenerate the ingredients for you. It's obviously not always spot on, but it helps cut down the faff. And you can save your recipe at the end so at least next time you don't have to do the same thing again.

It's much nicer to use than My Fitness Pal.

A lot of my recipes are made up by me and I also cook a lot of food from around the world like Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Brazilian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Caribbean so we'll see. I'll be surprised if it's got Moqueca or Pad Mee Korat in there but you never know!

Useful for the everyday stuff and the barcode scanner though anyway, and as you say I can always store recipes once I've put them in and tweak them if I change them.
