Vegetarian options to serve alongside a hog roast at a wedding

Casual wedding next summer, thoughts are hog roast for the main meal. What would you serve as a vegetarian option that fits the same vibe?

I'd appreciate any advice and experiences of this type of menu.

It's depressing that some people still think that vegetarians eat fish. The clue is in the name.

Hog roasts are revolting, I think the sight & smell would put me off eating any of the lovely veggie/vegan food regardless. Also with pig, I always think that’s what cooked human would smell like (“longpig”)…

Thanks for all your feedback. I have changed my mind in favour of a BBQ as suggested by Jack above and other posters. Same vibe and less likely to upset anyone, easy to incorporate veggie/vegan options.

Won't people have to wait for food because it won't all be ready at the same time? Also, you will need a separate barbecue to cook the vegetarian options.

I agree with PP. Hog roasts are absolutely revolting and I’m a meat eater.

Another one who would be horrified by a hog roast (am vegetarian but agree that plenty of meat eaters would also not be keen- and it’s always annoying when veggie options run out because the meat eaters like the look of them more than the meat option!).

The bbq area was about 3m long iirc and had 3 areas, 2 meat/fish, 1 vege

then tables with sides etc. so was fine

There’s no way a vegetarian would enjoy eating veggie pulled pork while in full view and smell of a whole pig roasting

Why is everyone so squeamish about hog roast? It's just un-deconstructed sausage! It's a fancy BBQ. I would eat it. I would also love spit roast goat, even nicer. I also eat whole fish, with the heads on. When I said European above, that was my inference, that in mainland Europe, not UK, eating whole unpreprepared foods is less unusual.

The problem with that comes when people assume that they can serve salmon & tuna as vegetarian options because ‘my friend’s niece is a vegetarian & she eats fish.’ Stupid.

I do agree, though, that if people are happy to eat meat they should be ok with seeing the messier side of it.

Yes this. I know no vegans other than myself, but a lot of my friends have recently eaten less and less pork as it comes more into the mainstream how badly pigs are treated, and that their intelligence and emotional capacity rivals dogs. I am thinking now and out of a group of ten people I can think of, only one of them would eat a 'hog' roast.

I’m not vegetarian but hate the sight of hog roasts. I find them very off putting especially with the head left on. Also in my circle of friends a lot of people have stopped eating pork for health reasons.

Seafood is definitely not the ethical option when you consider that octopuses are intelligent too.

I don't think there's any vegetarian food which would fit the same vibe as a whole dead animal being carved up all night 😂

I see that Pesto has been suggested but be aware , Pesto made with parmesan cheese is not vegetarian as it contains animal rennet .

Something like Italian Hard Cheese is non rennet ( check the label)?or you can use cashews instead

Paella would be a great option for anyone with allergies as can be dairy, gluten and meat free. Also serves quick!

I’d love a hog roast as would all my family and friends. All British. I wonder how many people claiming people don’t like them are veggie. If you eat pork, no point pretending it doesn’t come from a pig. I would however serve veggie food away from the hog.

Vegetarians dont eat meat. There isn't a strictness angle, they just dont eat meat or fish. I wouldn't do risotto, that's the latest dull veggie option. Filo pastry pie?

Well exactly, meat & fish are the same principle - it was a live creature, it got killed for food, it’s dead. Regardless of whether it swam, walked or flew.

The idea of only ‘strict’ vegetarians not eating seafood is stupid.
