Vegetarian options to serve alongside a hog roast at a wedding

Casual wedding next summer, thoughts are hog roast for the main meal. What would you serve as a vegetarian option that fits the same vibe?

I'd appreciate any advice and experiences of this type of menu.

Or is it a really bad idea 😬

Also if stone baked pizzas in the evening would this be too much 'take a way' type food. TIA

You’re going to put off a lot more guests with a live hack up of a pig than are true vegetarians. So put this on the invitations and expect to cater for more than expected vegetarian numbers.

Thanks Andy that's a very fair point

I wouldn’t use jackfruit. Lots of people strongly dislike it.

I’d not thank you for jackfruit but I think most veggies love halloumi and roasted veg in whatever bread you are using. Could be hard to keep tasty for long though, would get rubbery…

Jackfruit is what meat-eaters think vegetarians would eat. I think a nice Veggie Wellington or pie, layered with Feta, quinoa, beetroot, roasted veg etc… And various salads for everyone, make most of those veggie.

Id just do vegetarian sides. Pesto and pinenut pasta salad. New potatoes with mint and olive oil dressing mixed roasted vegetables, coleslaw, couscous, mixed vegetable lasagna, salad.

how about vegan pulled pork? Then they will eat exactly the same as everyone else? Or are you looking for something a little different and upmarket for a wedding? Will they be having the same sides?

Yes same sides to keep it simple. I'll look up the vegan pork, thank you

Er vegetarians need protein as well. Don’t make your vegetarian guests eat side dishes only. That’s rather inhospitable.

Not what you asked, but I run a wedding event business, part time, and hog roasts are much less common these days. I think a lot of people find them quite gross.

Veg chilli. I agree about the jackfruit. Cooked it for my dad once, tbe poor man is still traumatised.

LyndaLaHughes · Yesterday 16:18

I really wouldn’t have a hog roast at all. It’s not just vegetarians that won’t touch it.

NoraLuka · Yesterday 16:21

A pie with roasted veg, with a light salad.

I’m veggie but don’t normally mind preparing meat for other people/seeing them eat it so I’m not overly fussy but hog roasts really turn my stomach.

This sounds lovely!
And such a nice change from the ubiquitous veggie offerings of curry and/or chilli.

Casualuser · Yesterday 16:23

I like a hogroast

BCBird · Yesterday 16:24

Pig roast might sound like a good idea, however I would choose something else. I'm a meat eater, but the look of the pig can be off-putting. I remember too that there was not much to eat!

I would love a hog roast, as would all my friends, but we are all rural and/or European!

Hog Roast providers often do things like Paella or Risottos too. It depends how strict your veggie friends are, some will eat seafood, some won't. But both can be made strict veggie.

Vegetarians do not eat seafood as a vegetarian is someone who does not eat any animal flesh - i.e. no dead creatures!

SonaliS · Yesterday 16:50

perhaps get someone to make unlimited crepes? You could offer savoury eg mushrooms; Gruyère cheese; or sweet - Nutella, or stewed apple and cinnamon with a squirt of cream, or lemon and sugar.

Id be well happy with that as a meat eater!

concertinacornflake · Yesterday 16:53

Hog roasts are not a great option, plenty of meat eaters don't like them and they smell strongly.

But a vegetarian alternative would be halloumi I suppose.

hahabahbag · Yesterday 16:54

I’d opt for falafel patties as they work with the same sides as the pork. I would try and gauge how many vegetarians you have before committing to a hog roast as they serve a lot of people. For the evening I personally would just have one of those cheese towers plus serve platters of any leftover pork

British people are also European.

Depending on the number of guests, a hog roast and a pizza van might be too much food (and will be very expensive).

A hog roast is carnivorous to the max and leaves you having to cater significantly for vegetarians. A pizza van can offer meat and vegetarian pizzas and is currently one of the most popular options, in my experience.

If it’s going to be your main meal, some salads and sides will go down well. You can then offer something like tiramisu with coffee later.

I've never had any complaints. I host a lot. My vegetable lasagna is often requested. I do spinach and tofu and roasted vegetables in layers. My vegetarian moussaka is yummy as well. I often get requests to bring a tray or 2 when we go to friends for dinner. Its funny because im actually not a vegetarian anymore.

Protien comes in loads of places, beans, lentils, nuts ect besides not having 1 nutritionally balanced meal isnt going to kill anyone.

@securityrisk can add a bean salad.

I also ussaly do a beetroot and walnut hummus and a chickpeas one.
