Trying to decide on the cuisine for 100 people!
Thanks!

I think paella is kind of hit and miss and might be kinda soggy. I've never had hog roast but I adore pork and crackling!

NegativeSpace · 03/07/2026 18:12

I’m veggie but I wouldn’t eat a mass catered paella.
Rice is such a high risk for large catered events, because keeping it the right temp to prevent bacillus cereus spores growing bacteria and giving everyone D&V is going to be difficult. Not something you want your wedding to be remembered for!

Needmorelego · 03/07/2026 18:14

Would the hog roast have lots of sides like you'd get at a BBQ?
Because I'd like that - the sides that is 😂
I don't think a big communal paella sounds very nice at all.

24Dogcuddler · 03/07/2026 18:17

Neither I’m Veggie. As PPs have said the sight of Hog roast might be unpleasant for some including some who aren’t vegetarian or vegan.
Your choice though.

susiedaisy1912 · 03/07/2026 18:18

Neither are great options in my opinion

caringcarer · 03/07/2026 18:19

I love a hog roast. Don't like me rice so don't like paella.

culty · 03/07/2026 18:20

It really depends on your guests tbh.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 03/07/2026 18:21

Paella

BagaChips · 03/07/2026 18:22

We were going to do a hog roast but then thought it makes it difficult for anyone that doesn’t like it, so we did a big bbq instead with a separate one for any vegetarians. Is that an option?

ginasevern · 03/07/2026 18:22

I went to a wedding that had a Greek souvlaki street food van. That was a huge hit, especially with the salads and yoghurt dressings and all the other bits. Easy to do veggie with halloumi or vegan with marinated mushrooms and tofu too. I think paella is risky with the seafood and allergies etc and hog roast is a bit dated now.

Naurrr · 03/07/2026 18:24

Neither. Plus who wants to look at a burning corpse 🤢
Many people don't eat pigs.
Are there any other options?

Overthebow · 03/07/2026 18:26

I’d have both, they are completely different and will give options. Not everyone will like hog roast and not everyone will like paella. You could do a hog roast and a veggie paella.

WoollyPigeon · 03/07/2026 18:27

Urgh grim. Neither option

TooOrangey · 03/07/2026 18:29

I loathe a hog roast, but I’m definitely in the minority as most people seem to love them.

IlovedLadybirdbooks · 03/07/2026 18:29

I wouldn't go to a wedding reception where there was a hog roast. Nor would I eat paella.

Greek souvlaki street food van

This sounds great!

sanityisamyth · 03/07/2026 18:29

Hog roast as allergic to tomato.

MagicMarkers · 03/07/2026 18:30

Hog roasts are gross.

SnowSnow · 03/07/2026 18:31

I would say paella is more likely to be difficult for fussy eaters and a lot of people who aren’t that fussy don’t like fish so for that reason hog roast

TheGirlattheBack · 03/07/2026 18:32

I also hate hog roasts. I do like a good paella but not sure it’s wedding/large group meal appropriate.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/07/2026 18:33

What do YOU like?! It’s your wedding. Personally I love a hog roast, but that’s me. Up to you!

IwanttoWFH · 03/07/2026 18:33

Neither are great. The hog roast is off putting and always disappointing and bland. I don’t like Paella, so wouldn’t eat it.
I guess it depends on your guests? Do you have veggies/vegans? People who don’t like seafood or have allergies?

Are there any other options? Pizza? Fish and chip van etc? They sound like better options.

Bjorkdidit · 03/07/2026 18:34

Of course paella is large group meal appropriate. Have you not seen huge communal paella pans.

Do a mixed seafood/chicken and a vegan one. Add crispy potatoes and maybe meat balls in tomato sauce (plus the same with chick peas if you have more than the odd one or two vegetarian guests), for variety and make sure there's lots of bread and allioli.

But people wittering on about 'rice will kill people' are really tedious. I've eaten reheated rice multiple times a week for decades and have never been ill. The risk must be absolutely tiny yet half of Mumsnet seem to think people are constantly getting ill from eating rice.

palrono · 03/07/2026 18:35

Neither, and I would bring my own picnic basket if you did either. Or I'd decline the invite! I'm obviously not going to be missed either haha.

Newgirls · 03/07/2026 18:36

I think they sound like a good idea - one big thing you all share. But the reality is a bit hit and miss. Veggies won’t enjoy it. A buffet or bbq tends to work a lot better for that many people.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/07/2026 18:38

The smell of Paella turns my stomach. Go for the Pig!
