I went to a wedding that had a Greek souvlaki street food van. That was a huge hit, especially with the salads and yoghurt dressings and all the other bits. Easy to do veggie with halloumi or vegan with marinated mushrooms and tofu too. I think paella is risky with the seafood and allergies etc and hog roast is a bit dated now.

This sounds better than hog roast.

Hog roast but it has to have things like roast potatoes as sides and a few side dishes that could be mains for anyone who doesn’t eat pork

Which it never does it always comes with a Costco jar of applesauce and some stale buns
Honestly, It’ll just ruined the whole wedding serving that

oneofftempname · 04/07/2026 07:27

I eat meat. A hog roast would make me feel sick.

Sandysandybeaches · 04/07/2026 07:32

Neither. Hog roast is just a fancy sandwich and lots of people don’t like it + it’s difficult to eat elegantly and not drip grease on your nice dress. Paella can be nice - but can be variable and is quite boring. They are both things that people will eat v quickly so the meal won’t last long. They are also not good value compared to other options - you’d be. Better off with a buffet or bbq. With the hog roast some people will have finished before the others have started. If you are having a v informal wedding and not expecting people to be particularly dressed up they could be ok. Basically in terms of dress code they are more ‘come as you are’ than ‘morning suit’. If I had travelled hours, paid for a hotel etc I’d be a bit unimpressed and probably still hungry.

If it's an outside caterer who specialises Id go hog roast. If it's the venue, then Paella would be my choice.

Chickadee26 · 04/07/2026 08:40

We used to love Paella, now we both cant eat it for differant reasons, dh is allergic to octopus & squid and myself have intolerances to all night shades
Dh can eat pork and smoked foods, I can't eat most high fat meats like pork or the seasoning.
HOWEVER I would ask the host would they mind I make a safe for us meal if one of us couldn't eat.

10 yrs ago we both could have partaked and enjoyed either!

I know, I'd no idea there was so much hatred of rice and the fear is way out of proportion to the actual risk of food poisoning.

Likewise seafood, I know it's a common allergen, but the comments on here make it sound like everyone is allergic.

I'd be in heaven if I went to a wedding and there was paella on offer.

I'd prefer a seafood one but accept that it would probably have to be boneless chicken to be as inoffensive as possible.

And then add a vegan one unless you know there's no-one vegan/vegetarian coming.

Its one of the most common and serious allergens so if you have a title including the word paella as an option, your going to attract motr people responding with that issue. A lot of people wouldnt care either way so wouldnt respond. You'd mainly get the 'extremes'

But as it id, most of the paellas ive come across at events have been chicken.

Hog roast is difficult to eat and I would spill it down my outfit.
I would love to go to a wedding with paella on the menu - caters for veggies too.

Rice, really? I could understand if you said seafood (solved by the vegan version), but I've never heard of anyone not liking rice! It's just a bland carrier to pick up flavours.

Edited

My carer doesn't and my Dad didn't either.

I think a lot of people are put off by badly cooked rice in school.

If you are not doing a sit down meal then a couple of food trucks to give people a choice of what to eat.

Pansykavalier · 04/07/2026 11:16

I’m assuming you are looking for a fairly informal wedding meal that is easy to eat and pleases most palates? I would go with a Middle Eastern/Lebanese buffet - lamb with rice and cucumber yoghurt (falafel for vegetarians/vegans, plus things like hummus, baba ganoush, fatoush, tabbouleh, pitta bread.

PurpleThistle7 · 04/07/2026 18:05

I wouldn’t eat either - not a meat eater particularly and have a serious allergy to shellfish. But if you put what it is on the invite I’d happily join you and just eat before or after.

As a vegetarian to see a while pig being roasted makes me feel really sick!

I'm not a vegetarian but I also find the look of a hog roast stomach turning, I know that's not logical, but there we are.

Paella is a more practical choice and suits more people.

There aret caterers who just do paellas, they will be able to offer three or four different ones.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/07/2026 19:34

Neither - pork is problematic to many. As are carcasses! And the smell of roasting pork turn my stomach!

But with paella hanging around in the heat you have potential food poisoning issues with the rice

Chickadee26 · 05/07/2026 00:52

You didn’t ask for any other suggestions but here I am suggesting that a gourmet bbq catering service that offers a variety of foods.

It sounds like fun whatever you decide to do.

MarchionessVonSausage · 05/07/2026 03:15

I'd eat either, but with 100 guests wouldn't it take ages to get everyone fed with either option? Same with the a street food van if there's only one of them. I don't understand the logistics!
