Wedding dresses (I don’t like any)

I have been to 3 different bridal shops now and tried on about 10-15 dresses. I know the style that i want (fishtail not princess) as they suit my frame the most. The problem is, although a lot of the dresses were ‘nice’ non of them blew me away or stood out enough for me to buy them. When i think of the crazy costs of wedding dresses i don’t feel i can justify spending that kind of money on something that is just okay.

Is the bridal feeling a myth, am i really fussy 😂
Or have i just not found my dress?

@EvelynSalt i think this is my main problem. I thought i loved lace but the dresses i’ve tried have felt much too fussy for me (i usually wear quite plain/simple clothes).

Try wed2be shop they stock all sorts of sizes and are quite cheap, I love(d) my dress

@gwilt my mom had her dress made too (40 years ago now). It cost the equivalent of 2 or 3 thousand in today’s money. Although it was a big princess Diana 80s style dress so that’s probably why. Yours is such a reasonable price so I’ll definitely look into that. Thank you

How about something like this:
www.bijouxbridal.com/victoria-jane/outlet-wedding-dresses/18357
Then you could accessorise it if you felt you needed to.

For a size 6 (which I think in wedding dress sizes is perhaps an 8 or a 10 as they seem to operate off a completely different way to size wedding gowns) and someone who is 5'2", I think a fit & flare might be a better option. But that's purely going on what you've posted and my own thoughts.

Essence of Australia do a lot of amazing dresses.

Sewaccidentprone · 18/08/2021 13:45

Think main price of having a dress made is the cost of the fabric and how much you need of it.

So as long as you’re not buying fabric at £100 a metre!

riotlady · 18/08/2021 13:47

I hated everything I tried on in wedding shops too. The problem for me was that even the ones that are meant to be “slim” or “floaty” still have reams of heavy fabrics and it just feels like SO MUCH dress.

I much preferred the lighter high street ones. Monsoon had some beautiful ones that I tried on but I ended up with one from needle and thread

Maybe you're thinking of having too much lace over the dress and perhaps a simpler outline might suit you better with the lace only being an accent in the train - like this one:

I loved this but couldn’t get it in time

If I was your size when I was getting married, this would have been very much a dress I would have considered:

Twinkie01 · 18/08/2021 13:54

Pronovias do lots of fish tail ones which are beautiful. They're Spanish and just fit amazingly well.

Twinkie01 · 18/08/2021 13:56

Do you want sleeves or strapless? Would you prefer completely plain or a little bit of lace?

LookItsMeAgain · 18/08/2021 14:00

If you want lace all over, this might be right up your street (it's a two piece from Whistles)

You don't have to buy a dress - I hired mine. I know so many people who paid a fortune for something that's ended up in the loft for years after the wedding.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 18/08/2021 14:07

I got married last year just before lockdown. Saw my dress on a website www.bhldn.com and took a huge risk and ordered it from America. Was stunning and exactly what I wanted. Keep looking you'll find the right one for you x

MrsBBx · 18/08/2021 14:11

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. The dresses are all gorgeous.

I’m quite conscious of my boobs (post breastfeeding) so I would prefer a corset style top with lots of support/boning. I Love low/backless dresses but i feel too uncomfortable from the front.

I think i prefer sweetheart neckline dresses but would want to add a spaghetti strap. (The dresses i’ve tried on with straps have really unflattering elongated cups).

I love fishtail and fit and flare dresses, they make my figure look more curvy than I actually am.

My wedding dress was from Sassi Holford - I loved the trying on bit for the first time there! I don’t like fussy clothes and for my figure I was being steered towards big frothy numbers I hated on; the shop assistant there suggested a very simple fishtail and I loved it!

MrsBBx · 18/08/2021 14:18

I love the shape of this dress and the shape of the cups. I just don’t like the colour/material or the fussy detail

When you talk about dresses with straps having elongated cups, is this what you mean by that:
www.maggiesottero.com/maggie-sottero/adrianna/17612 - that kind of wide strap becoming the cup and bodice of the dress?

LookItsMeAgain · 18/08/2021 14:35

Oh I wish I was doing it all again!

This gown is gorgeous and you could go to town on a veil for the lace. Keep the gown with simple elegance and clean lines but go crazy with the veil and your hair style!

LookItsMeAgain · 18/08/2021 14:36

LOL! in all my excitement I forgot to include the link to the dress!

MrsBBx · 18/08/2021 14:38

@LookItsMeAgain yes similar to that, even with a thinner strap it seems to have the same effect.

What about something like this?

I love the veil and shape but would prefer a sweetheart neckline 😊 it is beautiful though, I'm on their website now x
