Wedding dresses (I don’t like any)

I have been to 3 different bridal shops now and tried on about 10-15 dresses. I know the style that i want (fishtail not princess) as they suit my frame the most. The problem is, although a lot of the dresses were ‘nice’ non of them blew me away or stood out enough for me to buy them. When i think of the crazy costs of wedding dresses i don’t feel i can justify spending that kind of money on something that is just okay.

Is the bridal feeling a myth, am i really fussy 😂
Or have i just not found my dress?

How does this one grab you (Maggie Sottero - Georgia)

OP like a pp I'd seriously consider having a dress made for you.

We are going back nearly 20 years here Grinbut, like you I had a strong vision of what I wanted abs just couldn't find anything that was quite (or even nearly) right.

The colour was wrong, the neckline wasn't the right shape, the sleeves were too long/short, the skirt was too voluminous etc etc.

I just didn't want to compromise on something so expensive.

I paid £1500 for my dress but over half of that was for the super expensive silk fabric I chose.

The whole process was brilliant. I found a local dress designer/maker, described what I wanted and she did a few sketches for me until we nailed the design.

Then she made a toile (mock up in linen) and this was great as it allowed everything to be adjusted so it was perfect (for example I thought I'd wanted 3/4 sleeves but ended up with short ones once I'd seen the design on me) and I had the neckline changed.

Then choosing the fabric....any colour, any texture any weight of silk I wanted but was guided my my designer as to what would work best with the design (specifically over the weight of the silk). I bought that from a wholesalers and despite the cost it was a good price.

It was absolutely my perfect dress and I'd never have been able to buy it off the shelf.

It was super flattering as it fit me perfectly and looked far, far more expensive than what I'd paid for it (I think partly the fit and also because of the quality of the silk).

I'd definitely recommend you think about this option. You don't need to spend as much as I did.

The hardest part is finding someone talented to help design and make it but they are out there!

Why don't you just buy a regular gown that you like, and then have it altered a bit so it fits you perfectly? You can even add details to it if you want.

I had three gowns, one them wasn't a wedding dress as much as it was just a good quality white satin slip dress. I had it altered so it fit me perfectly, and it looked like a wedding dress.

MrsBBx · 18/08/2021 15:41

@PragmaticWench I absolutely love the second Pronovias dress. They have it in a bridal shop near me! Thank you 😊 and thanks to everyone for sending me pictures/giving me tips for looking for dresses. I feel so much more positive about it all than i did this morning x

I thought I wanted the exact same thing you’re looking at and ended up with something completely different.

I wasn’t even going to try it on as I didn’t think it was me at all but as soon as I put it on I knew that was the one I was having. It was a Claire Pettibone lace dress. I went to a little boutique and let the owner choose what she thought would suit me. My reasoning was that she sees people trying them on every day so knows what suits each shape and size.

Looking back now I think I would have felt much more uncomfortable in the mermaid/fishtail ones I’d tried on in another shop. They were so much more restrictive and heavy (I got married in summer on a hot day).

PragmaticWench · 18/08/2021 18:42

@MrsBBx Great! I saw and thought it was beautiful.

MimiSunshine · 18/08/2021 19:49

@MrsBBx have you thought of visiting a Wed2Be shop? None of their dresses are astronomically expensive but they let you browse and try on as many as you like?
They do have lots on their website but my friend got hers from there and they had 100s more that weren’t.

Being able to choose your own and play about a bit may help you get a better idea of what you like

Coffeecakee · 19/08/2021 09:24

I could have written your post myself OP. Size 6/8 and 5ft5. Like you I thought I loved lace so tried on loads (traditional, modern, floral) and it all overwhelmed me - I couldn't see anything but the lace, even if it was only a small part of the dress. I tried a-line, more structured silhouettes (trumpet, mermaid etc), thick straps and sleeves but they all drowned my frame. Didn't even consider a ball gown for that reason. Equally, completely plain I just felt lost in, it was just a bit flat. Lady in the shop put me in a crepe fit and flare with sweetheart neckline and spaghetti straps and it was perfect. It has some floral appliqués sewn on to the crepe but as it's ivory on ivory with no illusion, it doesn't have the lace feel but it's not completely plain either. Like you, the sample size was 3 or 4 sizes too big so they had to do lots of clipping at the back to let me see how the front would look then the same to the front to let me see the back. It's definitely not ideal but they can hopefully do enough to give you the idea.

Buyitinbamboo · 20/08/2021 22:03

I got my dress from wed2b and they are cheaper and stock lots of styles and sizes, you take it home that day.

I would say I didn't get that bridal moment with my dress straight away. It grew on me and when I tried on a few others and went back to that one I felt like it was mine.

LindyLou2020 · 20/08/2021 22:33

@gwilt

Have you thought about getting one made for you? Mine cost £300 Smile
That was going to be my suggestion too. It would obviously depend on when you're getting married, and whether you would have the time to have a dress made from scratch by a professional, independent dressmaker, (do they still exist?). But just think - you could design it yourself and have exactly what you want!
thebookworm1 · 29/08/2021 08:12

I had my dress made and it was the best decision ever 😀 It sounds like you know what you want so it may be an option for you.

thebookworm1 · 29/08/2021 08:15

PS: mine was a very elaborate princess with loads and sparkle, lace and a long train and budget was 1K. I went for the most expensive fabric options too.
So really, the price was cheaper than what I’d have paid for it off the rack.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 29/08/2021 08:31

I struggled and went to 3 or 4 particularly fancy places like wedding club and sassi holford (some dresses were 10k+?!)

Ended up finding my dress at wed2b it was 650 IIRC. All dresses are basically ready to were, mine needed taking up slightly and that was it.
In terms of quality there was literally no difference vs the £5-6k dresses i tried on

Here is the fishtail /mermaid selection

Might be something in there you like?

ErickBroch · 31/08/2021 11:12

I literally just bought mine on Saturday. I had been to five shops and nothing felt right, the ones I liked most I still had 'cons'. I tried one on at the weekend and I knew it was right immediately, no question! No negatives, no concerns, done. Glad I kept looking, I would say keep going and maybe check other styles.

Boopeedoop · 09/09/2021 20:16

How about this? I have a feeling that cost is what is putting you off. So perhaps a used gown or ex sample would suit you more?

Not quite a fishtail but very budget friendly.

Another vote for finding a dressmaker and having it made bespoke.

If you're clear on what you want and especially if you're looking for something not-too complicated (eg not lots of intricate hand embroidery!) it should be much cheaper than buying off the peg
