Secret wedding..how to find witnesses?? HELP!

Hello!

So me and my partner are booked in to the local Town Hall to be married on March 25th Grin for a secret wedding! The only problem is we need to find two witnesses. We don't have any family members or friends who could witness us so we're hoping to find two random people to help us out.

Has anyone had to find witnesses for their secret wedding before? If so how did you go about it?

TIA! Smile x

I have seen people post their location on MumsNet before, and people have PM'd them to offer their services Smile

JoyceDivision · 11/02/2019 20:04

It's been done here many times!

What area on what date? Usually lots of mumsnetters will gladly turn up Smile

Fredathetortoise · 11/02/2019 20:05

I was a witness for a Mumsnet wedding.

If you post your location, people can PM you

Seaseasea · 11/02/2019 20:05

Oh I’d love to be a witness!! If you post what area I’m sure they’ll be plenty of offers

wigglypiggly · 11/02/2019 20:05

Have you asked if anyone at the Town hall will be a witness. Put out a request to mumsnetters, someone will be very happy to help, we need to know what part of the country you are in. CongratulationsWine

I was a witness at a secret wedding after I saw someone asking here. It was really lovely Smile

WeeDangerousSpike · 11/02/2019 20:06

My boss got married abroad and swopped 'witnessing' with the couple getting married after them - they witnessed each others weddings.

Lungelady · 11/02/2019 20:07

I would do it!
We got a random man in New York to be our witness!

Batshitcraziness · 11/02/2019 20:08

Where are you getting married?

TiaJade12 · 11/02/2019 20:09

Oh wow!! How amazing! I've been super worried about us not being able to find witnesses in time and having to change the date. We're based in Leeds so the wedding will be at Leeds Town Hall. Fingers crossed we find a couple of people willing to help us Smile thanks guys!

How sad am I - just checked the thread to see when it was in the hope of being your witness Grin

gcseoptions999 · 11/02/2019 20:10

We wanted strangers and just went out into the street a few minutes before. The mature ladies who agreed were absolutely delighted to do it and thought it was an amazing experience no doubt something to tell their friends and family. We deliberately didn't choose our local town so we were less likely to approach people who might know us or see us again. It was a fantastic day and never regretted choosing this type of wedding.

Batshitcraziness · 11/02/2019 20:10

Aww it’s too far away from me op or I would have offered hopefully you’ll find a couple of mnetters locally. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding Flowers

student26 · 11/02/2019 20:12

I’ve been a witness several times before as I was working near a busy wedding area. You can see if you can pick a couple of strangers before your ceremony, if you don’t mind things being last minute! I loved being a witness.

KennDodd · 11/02/2019 20:13

Oh, I wanted to do it but you're too far away. Some friends did this, they just got a couple of passers by.

Lungelady · 11/02/2019 20:14

I could do it!!! But am on my own!!

Gumbo · 11/02/2019 20:16

We asked our neighbours tbe night before... they were delighted and even rushed out and got us a present as soon as the shops opened the next morning!

Most people will would be very happy to be asked to be surprise witnesses - you can ask pretty much anyone.

rainbowgrimm · 11/02/2019 20:18

I can do it!!! I'd be absolutely over the moon to help you out.

Lungelady · 11/02/2019 20:18

rainbowgrimm you and I!

TiaJade12 · 11/02/2019 20:21

@gcseoptions999 that's amazing! We thought about asking random passersbyers but I worry that people will be busy as it's on a Monday morning at 10.30am. Not the best day or time I know lol

TiaJade12 · 11/02/2019 20:23

@rainbowgrimm @Lungelady omg! The only thing is it's 10.30am on a Monday morning (not the best time or day) but if you could make it we would appreciate it soo soooooo much! Grin

We did the same, the officiant just asked two random people in the building/on the street to oblige and wasn't an issue. She said it happens all the time.

Talcott2007 · 11/02/2019 20:26

My DM and StepDF had a secret wedding in registry office somewhere in the lake district - he had a very very unstable exwife (who cheated and left him and their children for OM) but would have probably turned up at any planned wedding and caused all sorts of drama so I get why they did it like that. They just popped into a charity shop that was a couple of doors down from the registry office about an hour before their slot and asked if anyone could spare the time to be their witnesses - a very nice couple offered and they they have been exchanging christmas cards every year for a good 20 years since.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/02/2019 20:26

Aww I love these threads. Not in Leeds unfortunately but sounds like you might be sorted already!
